About the scope blur

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So I heard in one the recent livestream that rocket wants to add a blurring effect around certain scopes and optics in the DayZ SA. Many other games do this in an attempt to make scopes more realistic.

But really, if I were looking through a scope and wanted to focus my eye on areas outside of the scope while still holding it up to my face, I easily could.

Also, adding in such a feature would be redundant anyways. Your eye can only focus on around 3 degrees (correct me if I'm wrong) out of the approximate 180 degrees that you can see. Try looking through a scope in any other video game while reading some text on one of the corners of the screen at the same time. You can't do it, because your eye can only focus on so much at a time. A blurring affect will only make it so your eye can't do things that it should be able to.

In conclusion, please do not add in this feature. It is both unrealistic and unnecessary.

is true what you say :beans:

when I go shoot pigeon with my dad I look down shotgun iron sight but also look around same time ;)

look in scope is same as look down iron sight   :)

you have choice where you make focus

edit maybe better system is when you put scope on eye all around is going black same like binos but when you put gun forward small amount everything around is in focus, so have 2 position for scope

I think the reasoning for the decision is to make sniping harder. At the end of the day, it's still a video game. ARMA 2 and 3 are the actual simulators.

Any good marksman / shooter will always keep both eyes open anyways to increase awareness and retain 3d sight. A very weak effect wouldn't hurt though.

EDIT : It needs to be very, very weak!

In regards to scopes I'm more concerned about the possibility of Battlefield-style "scope glint", since that was brought up in the stream just before Rocket killed that dude and he seemed to like the idea. I don't see how that would be realistic unless they also have reflections off binoculars, knives, bits of metal, windows, water, etc, not just singling out snipers. These days a lot of scopes have anti-reflective coatings or devices anyways.

Anyways in regards to blurring, I don't care too much either way, HOWEVER you have to take into account that the field of view around the scope is also zoomed in for performance reasons. In real life your peripheral vision won't zoom 4-12x.

Any good marksman / shooter will always keep both eyes open anyways to increase awareness and retain 3d sight.

Maybe our characters will have a chance of spawning with cross-eye dominance, which can be very irritating unless you shoot left-handed (if right-handed) or close one eye.

Ha no.

And your entire vision zooming in has upsides and downsides. And even if the reason for the scope blur is balance (Which I don't think it is), it would be unnecessary to program it in since the human eye already does it, and I wouldn't really call everyone who uses a 4x scope a sniper.

It would be nice just having the scope zoom in, and not the other eye too.

Just as Gews said.

Clumzy is right. U wana make things harder? Introduce ammo quality, (missfires,) which makes sence years into the plague. Don't mess scope mechanics.

The sole reason they are doing this, is because IRL you aren't gonna have a pitch black area around your scope. And yes IRL you can focus your eyes outside of the scope, but you know how hard that would be to code in? They would have to make a whole new system to support the focusing AKA Depth of Field. Plus, I haven't found a game yet that has a good looking and noticeable DoF without having a lag while focusing. It's really too much work and too small in my opinion to worry about it.

how about holding alt to freelook when scoped dosent move the scope anymore....just the head. And when you hit it vision down the scope becomes blurred and vision around the scope is normal.

They are most likely going to do this.  Gun maintenance/weapon degradation is already confirmed. So, we will see something along these lines.

I think it will look something like this. I think this is pretty accurate because you will have to focus your attention down your scope during a shot (in real life) and it just looks better than having your entire screen be a scope view.  Yes, you can quickly avert your attention to other things if you weren't focusing down your scope, but you can do that by letting go of the scopeview and quickly looking around.  I would say this is pretty authentic and a good mechanic to have in the game.

Hello there

One would imagine scopes will be similar to that which we have seen in A2 and A3 and their mods. If scopes could be realistically done, Id be over the moon, as Ive not seen the truly realistic in any game, but I think we will mostly end up with a compromise which will be perfectly useable and aesthetic enough for us all.

But PiP isn't in so the outside view gets zoomed which also isn't realistic.

Military scopes, yes. I don't see a whole lot of anti-glare scope set ups on hunting guns.

I think the red colour on the lens of a scope is the anti-reflective coating, and even the cheap $30 scope I have has that. Not all scopes have it but I'm pretty sure most do.

Most don't. I have never seen a scope with a red tint in my life, and I've seen a LOT of scopes.

Can't they just not zoom in around the scope? Keep the outside view normal but the scope zoomed in?

I believe that would need PiP technology or something similar. But now that I read more of this ticket http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=2510 I found a comment that if the game is DX10 Geometry Shader can be one solution. PiP is pretty resource hungry in Arma 3. But the outside picture might need to be bit blurry (low res etc.) then to save some performance.

I think at least we won't see black boxes like i A2.
