I have just bought ARMA II: Combined Operations, and I'm going to play DayZ once it is finished installing, before I play; what should I know regarding my future adventures in the zombie infested land of Chernarus?

Make sure you read all the install guide on the forums to save headaches.

 

Then stick with vanilla Dayz for a bit.

And if you DO have trouble installing first thing you do is IGNORE the simpleton that tells you to delete your steam files and then redownload with dayz commander ......  Dayz Commander is a great program that will help you find servers easily, and keep your game and mods up to date but I dunno why everyone thinks its necessary to delete everything (sorry have seen this advice given so many times it makes me sick, kinda like the fool that says to format every time theres a windows error)

Download DayZ commander and have fun! Also look up the different variations such as Epoch, (DayZ commander makes them all easily accessible)

Most people run straight for military loot to get geared up.  Take your time, search house by house, never know when you'll find food, a map, compass, ect.

Honestly, half of the fun is learning the ropes on your own. Don't spoil the fun by looking up guides or using loot maps. Have fun :D

yeah dont be like me when i started,  because this was my gameplan

run straight to a big city, run into the firehouse and get a rifle then run away.  go to the store get a backpack and food. 

mark NWAF on your map, see a bambi and open fire then spend the rest of your life (10 minutes or so)  killing anything in the city.

Now if i spent at the east end of the coast i run up to zelenegosk and towns leading up to it. then go to NWAF and set up a base.

If im playing epoch i grab food and anything i can find and sprint to starry trader. setting up a life of luxury in northern chenarus with a rifle and axe and a car. many hours of dwelling on my pc later a small base with a safe and a combolock garage door

I'd follow Orlok's advice. Find a low pop vanilla server and just enjoy. Get a feel for the game and for the environment. And the controls.
