DayZ Double Developer Blog 14th May 2013

Recommended Posts

I'm not sold on the internet radio idea yet but it does open up lot's of potential which I guess is what they want in the SA. If the SA is successful I can imagine a few DayZ radio stations being set up, clans could use them to advertise etc.

This is what I could imagine also. I know a lot of people proper love playing DayZ with tunes on in the background. It's cool how the new radio concept is going to be able to bring that habit of listening to music whilst playing into the DayZ world.

I think iniitialy many will see it as a pointless or novelty addition to the game but over time (if it works well) then we'll start to see some interesting stuff going on.

One thing we know from gaming in the past is that if you give people the tools they'll never cease to amaze you with the things they come up with. Minecraft is a good example, if you look at some of the effort and imagination that goes into some of those creations it's mind-boggling.

Radios could provide for some imaginative gameplay, but there's no way to avoid the elephant in the room(external voice programs).

Agreed, people will always use those but radios offer something different IMO. If you're using TS to keep in touch with your team for example you still have no way of contacting others on the server, something people frequently use the side-chat for currently.

A good example of radio usage could be to arrange a trade with a stranger. Trading is something I think we'll see a lot more of in the SA considering crafting and the amount of new gear we'll eventually see.

I don't think it's main purpose is to replace TS,Skype, Mumble etc.

I don't know...

Much like how I opposed the idea of being able to draw or spraypaint stuff in the world (because dicks) I sadly think a way to break the fourth wall and "stream" stuff in game will be a vehicle for trolling. How will copyright be handled? How many seconds will it take before someone plays porn on their radio? Or the audio from a zombie movie to freak other players out?

Maybe I would like the idea more if it worked like the user submitted books will work in the future where the community supplies the content, in this case songs and maybe even talk shows, which has to be approved by the devs or the rest of the community.

EDIT: Or maybe I have misunderstood and "radio stations" will be supported stations by the game and not just anything. I hope!

It totally should be, though. I really hope people realize the detriment to in-depth gameplay that external communication programs pose. Why scavenge when you already have crystal clear comms with your massive clan? Why care about your life when you just respawn and immediately arrange a pinpoint accurate pickup on the coast? At least with a radio, you have to find/repair it.

Or, on the flip-side, as I constantly try to illustrate when I play... One can broadcast locations of vehicles, tents, and players on sidechat. Same thing can be done on server TS channels.

Meta-gaming, in the traditional RP sense, is really what is cheapening the experience for me. Knowing that there is a consequence free comm system out there when I try to ambush a group or even defend against a group, knowing they can communicate my position even after they're dead.

Comms need to be brought into the systems of the game. Radios should be the only method of long-range communication.

However, radio stations will probably end up being like "medics" in DayZ. There'll be a bunch of shitty ones that just annoy you, and maybe one or two that stand out as immersive and noteworthy.

As above, if you can just tune into any old station then its going to get abused, and would much prefer to keep it all in game,

Use green mountain, players have to repair the systems there so it can broadcast to the whole server, and/or have mobile military style transmitters that can be repaired and used,

Music CD's and Mp3 players could be lootable for this purpose, also car radios/cd players.

I'm not sure how being able to tune into any radio station can be abused or used for trolling? I guess people could blare out shitty music and follow you around. As I say though, I'm yet to be sold on the idea but is does have massive potential.

Don't forget that nothing's written in stone at this point and it's feedback from us that will shape the game during the alpha period. I'm sure there's many more crazy ideas to come that some will love and others will hate. If Radios become a pain in the ass and end up being abused or ruining the game for many I'm sure it'll be addressed in the future. Like most things we're gonna see in the SA I guess we just have to see where it goes, it could evolve into something unlike we've never seen in a game before or it could fail and end up being removed/toned down.

So long as I can flip to a different frequency from someone blaring dubstep across the radiowaves, it'll be cool. I think though, that maybe this'll encourage a bit more server loyalty and/or significant servers. Everyone'll probably flock to the server with the "Three Dog" imitator.

That's the thing though; if it's handled right it could be great! I think I simply misunderstood the definition of "radio station" though and thought it meant you could stream any audio of your choosing in game. But even then not everyone will have a radio so it won't be like the annoying guys playing songs in side chat.

All in all, I hope it will work.

I guess the main difference with radios and side-chat is that firstly you'll have to find a radio, secondly to listen to it without the sound giving away your position you'll need to add headphones (confirmed by Rocket). Then you'll have to scan frequencies etc to find different stations or other survivors.

Fingers crossed I guess! It'll probably be one of those things some people completely ignore and others use all of the time.

What I am looking forward to is when some entertaining bloke sets up his radio in a remote part of the map and starts broadcasting a show regularly; becoming an in-game celebrity. Much like how DR Wasteland pioneered the whole medic thing.

EDIT: Updating players with info, spreading rumors, warning for hotspots. The eyes and ears of Chernarus!

Exactly, radio needs to be replacing all consequence-less and/or non-acquired methods of communication, TS and Skype included.

Radios will be cool especially when playing alone. ACRE style interacting is 1000x more awesome thing than annoying side chat. Let's hope the sound is better than in Arma 2 because it's weak.

It's not going to be a pretty test. Currently there are a number of broken animations, as we're halfway between to skeletons. An example being holding a gun, it's completely buggered right now.

Also, the proxy-based weapon attachment system is 2/3 through implementation, so that's not pretty either. But both of those systems are revolutionary in terms of the engine.

So there isn't anything to stream except a large number of cosmetic bugs. The success of the server client architecture is not in demonstrating anything new visually - it's background stuff.

Although Matt and me both noticed the performance was rather good despite a huge number of loot items and a fair few zombies.

Rocket in reply to someone asking whether this closed test would be streamed.
