DayZ Alpha won't launch until launched !

Recommended Posts

DayZ, the standalone zombie survival game spawned from the popular Arma 2 mod, will enter official review in June, with plans for a widespread alpha sometime after then, creator Dean Hall tells Joystiq.

"We're going to review the situation in June," Hall says. "So there'll be no release between now and June. And we're quite hopeful that we'll go then. I know that people get really frustrated because they want to play, but I just think this is the best option."

DayZ is basically ready for an alpha run, but Hall and his team are waiting to perfect the client-server architecture. Hall currently has 25 people in a small pre-alpha, and he hopes to get a few hundred playing DayZ before opening the alpha. DayZ alpha keys will go live in batches, possibly 50,000 at a time, and Hall is looking at a possible Kickstarter-inspired distribution model, where players would pay certain amounts to opt into the alpha and snag other goodies, in tiers.

"We want to release the keys in chunks of what we have servers available," Hall says. "The idea is to very, very quickly try to release something out there, because that allows us to start capacity testing. We've got one final thing we're waiting for with the release date, which is the completion of our client-server architecture. It's basically making the game into an MMO, and pretty much the moment that's done, we'll release."

Yep, expected this since Dean leaves for Everest at the end of this month and doesn't return until June.

Hello there

*brace for impact*

There was never any official release time. Folk assumed it would be before his Everest jaunt. It did seem appropriate back then.

It's no surprise that it will be released later on, but I expect a great storm of complaints, toys being thrown out of prams, accusations of lies and a Illuminati conspiracy and a general wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I'm strapped in and my shields are up.

I want SA to be released as much as the next guy but I'd rather them take their time and make sure the game is ready and playable than them rush it and have a glitched and buggy game.

Of course people are going to bitch and complain because the game is taking so long to release. But fuck it. Rocket could wait until the end of the year to release it for all I care. I just want the game to feature as much stuff as it can, and be as playable as possible.

Release game before he goes to Everest?

Ain't nobody got time for that!

Seriously guys, I hate to be "that guy" but... good things do come to those who wait. And this is a good thing, and I expect a lot more out of it then I would've in December. But I am ready and waiting!

I would rather have a completed game in June than an incomplete one now. The mod is still plenty of fun, and will keep me going for a while yet. Like others, I expect this to create a good old-fashioned whinge-athon from some quarters, but that seems to be the culture of the internet these days.

Here's to an awesome (and finished!) game arriving before 2014!

I wish Rocket was more active on these forums like he used to be during the mod development. I'd rather hear stuff like this from him than in some interview that another player had to post about.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed mainly as there wasn't any indication as to when it could possibly be released, and that got me excited thinking it could possibly have been soon. But it doesn't really matter, I'm proper anticipating getting stuck in to the closed external testing!

all i'm going to say is this;

I'm proud that they want to perfect the architecture and give us the fullest in the Alpha and Beta Stages, after all, wouldn't you guys want as much perfection as we can get?!

i'll gladly wait till summer, or even next xmas for this release

Hey, it's a time frame at least. That'll give all the animators plenty of time to smooth out the zombies, smooth out the pathing, and do some final tweaks before rocket gets back from Everest. Then rocket can take our money and we start melting zombie faces. Glad to hear it although I don't know why that had to be such a big secret up until now.

I really can't wait and this is a lot better than Matts "hopefully in "2013" but I also remember how many times Rocket said "IT HAS TO BE RELEASED BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR" I just hope it is relatively hacker proof by beta.
