promote walking (will be unpopular of a suggestion)

Recommended Posts

People can't run all day, especially with all that gear on you.

Promote walking over running. Example ways to do that:

  • running massively drains stamina which then massively affects your aim/your ability to fight in melee combat
  • if you are low on stamina you may trip and fall. to your knees at first, no damage, just slows you down. if you keep trying to run and your stamina gets low enough you will fall on your face, which very rarely(!) could result in a broken something or just damage
  • certain things, basically everything small, like tripwires should be less visible while running
  • zombies automatically aggro against running targets but if you are slow they have to be a lot closer to identify you as human

You should still be able to run from cover to cover in a city with small breaks in between without hassle.

Yes, walking around all the time is boring, so make the world more interesting

  • edible stuff in the woods to be found (which is less visible while running as well)
  • useful stuff to be found (sticks to build things, tinder, rocks to be used in slingshots etc)
  • zombies everywhere
  • animals everywhere. non edible animals, too (small birds) but they should fly up/run away when near humans/zombies
  • and many more which I can't think of!

This would ramp up immersion greatly imho.

I generaly like the Ideas that makes the game harder. Have an amount of stamina is actually one i would support.

I realy had to laugh on the second part of it...

Imaging your under fire running away... Drop to knees... Bullets fly arround... Run further BÄM Faceplant! lol

I agree with Stamina being added as a background-factor in the Standalone. The less stamina you use, the faster it should regenerate. (To make cover-to-cover running possible, like you said.)

But. Tripping because of exhaustion doesn't really happen. Very, very rarely does. Usually you trip because you lost your balance and were too tired to react to it, so I think it'd be better if forest-y areas had an insignificant chance of falling over even at full stamina, but would increase as your stamina was getting low.

Especially with zombies spawning in the forests in the Standalone(there was some talk about doing this), it would make everything very interesting, especially if you were panicking from nearby zombies, causing the trip-factor to increase even more. (And why not make it possible to hit your head and get knocked unconscious, too? That can happen, and would be totally realistic.)

ah, panic is a good thing to add in there, yes!

tripping because you're exhausted happens rarely, that is true. but add 40kg (88 lbs) on your back and suddenly it happens more often :)

why, yes

Excellent idea. That is something that could make the map "larger". Though i think no matter how low your stamina is there should be a boost when getting into combat, due to an adrenaline explosion in your body, so you might have a chance to find nearby cover.

Would make sense but you gotta think about the impact of a system like that, this would simply mean that people (in a grp) would start shooting near each other (to get into combat) so they can move faster and for a longer time :P.

1) bullets are supposed to become rare. So it might be "expensive" to shoot every once in a while just for the run.

2) If it happens every once in a while it might start to loose it's effect gradually. As someones character gets used to be shot close by his mates. But this loss of effect will also fade if your character does not get shot at for a while. This concept is based on the fact that people get used to situations they are in for long time.

3) ii don't know for how long a person's body could produce andrenalune, without some serious concequenses to his/her health.

For the above reasons i believe that spaming on this feature would not be very popular. Maybe for once or twice per hour, so you can sprint for 1-2 minutes more. Don't forget that this is only ment to give a brief boost under very serious situations.

Add a bigger gap in speed between running and sprinting.

Hell, make it "leisurely jogging" and sprinting.

I'm all for a dynamic stamina system as long as it remains authentic. I'm not keen on artificially obscuring small objects because you're running though(if thats what you meant).

I really like the idea of taking DayZ fully down the path of The Road, where fatigue and exhaustion slows the pace of the game down. Where many people carry unloaded firearms or have so little ammunition, they'd prefer to hold up people, than killing them on sight. Where running longer distances increase your thirst, hunger and affects your accuracy severely. However I think it would be too radical a change in gameplay, a no-go for most players and since nothing like this has ever been tested in DayZ, it would be a huge risk to implement and cause major upset.

As much as I like it, I think it's close to impossible to implement it at such late stage.

I say go for it. Currently everyone is a marathon runner. Add stamina that is affected by weight.

I think some one that is carrying 30 kilos or less could jog around with out getting sufficiently tired though. There should an intermediate jog in between walking, running and sprinting.

Also if you walk more, you should get hungry less quickly. This would be authentic and would naturally balance running to quickly get food or walking and moving slow and steadily.

I've been asking for this for awhile now but I do not think that forcing walking is good idea though.Instead I would drop the run speed down past default Arma2 run speed so that its a jog rather than a run.People can jog for very long distances as can be witness everywhere you go. ;) Sprinting will slow down to the run speed in default Arma2(Dayz run speed is too fast IMO)but stay there for as long as you wanna run "faster" than jog speed....but this is where hunger/thirst gets magnified.Allows people to still run at close to same speeds that are in Dayz right now but they need to decide if they wanna burn thru their rations just to get somewhere or instead jog there at normal ration consumption speeds.

No thanks--not in a game like this. There are many things that could be done to make it more of a sim. That is not why people like it and it probably isn't what the majority of people want. They like having enough "semi-realism", finding items, and the intense player interaction.

You are asking for "realism" what would require many, many checks and balances. As it is right now, having an unlimited amount of stamina does not unbalance the game, or break it in any way, it simply speeds up the already slow pace. As it is, it still takes what, 20 or 30 minutes to run from the spawn to the NWAF?

People who want to play a video game for an hour at night time don't want to spend 15 or 20 minutes walking to the next city to catch up with a friend they were playing with the night before. That is how you lose fans.

Realism cannot be done properly in a video game....It just can't. There are too many circumstances that would make this idea very annoying. Magnified hunger and thirst? It already happens pretty fast, but it has to in order to keep people incentivized to go into town and look around. If I'm in a shootout and out of stamina, what? I have to walk around while people are shooting me? Will there be a burst of adrenaline when under stressed situations to counter-act the stamina meter?

I understand that the hardcore players who take the time to discuss the game and join forums to talk about games like making things more out of reach for annoying little kids and people who just want to login and shoot somebody, but the reality is that the game has to be friendly enough to get mainstream support or they can't make enough money and there won't be as much incentive for other companies to follow suit into this sort of game realm.

I think they talked about this in the SA a tad, but if it does happen, they zombies might need a nerf which was also in SA i think. O.0

I like the idea make this game more real

I think this is a wonderful idea. It would add an entirely new level of player behavior. You would start seeing things like guarded caravans and patrols. You'd see COD kiddies running around a city killing fresh spawns, only for a well-rested player to give chase and hunt them down. A whole new intensity to running from zombies. It it could be affected by adverse health conditions, etc. Obviously it would require much balancing, but things like this were exactly what I was hoping for when I got into DayZ.

That's a great idea. One of those must have concepts in a survival game too. Your inventory weight should have a significant impact on stamina also. A fresh survivor with an empty backpack could jog everywhere while a seasoned survivor with an m249, jerry can and a car windscreen in his backpack would need to walk most of the time. One great example is carrying around a M107 or AS50, both of which weigh 14kg empty and a round for either is 600-800 grams each. That should be a huge factor. So when it comes to weapons it could be a Pros and Cons kind of decision with firepower versus mobility along with all the rest of the stuff you keep with you.

And remember rule number one: Cardio

But when we can't run everywhere there should be more ways available for transportation. Not more cars but bicycles. In a rural area like Cernarus every single house would have a bike, or at least every second house. So a bike shouldn't be very rare.

Please do, think the major grp of players would love this, you can´t just think like bigelektra that some fans will be lost then, but if you do you gain other type of players instead who would not play the game when it´s rapid. this is a choise the developers have to do, what they want, you lose some you get some....

I think with vehicles being a more viable idea in the stand alone this is certainly an excellent idea, making running from place to place like a marathon athlete does seem kinda unrealistic though I support it with the mod given that it would take -hours- to really do anything from one town to another on foot. Walking along the road with nothing but scenery porn to look at as you go? Eh, I'll pass on that.

That being said, since vehicles are supposedly going to be a bit easier to repair in the stand alone I don't think this is a terribad idea. If there were more cities and more buildings to explore within cities to find supplies to fix cars and become more mobile then getting from one city to another wouldn't be all that hard. Though if the map Chernarus stays as it is and doesn't add anymore buildings to cities and small towns to explore and root around for supplies in then honestly... I can't say I support this idea, the prime reason I feel being able to run forever in DayZ is that there's nothing to do otherwise unless you can get from one town to another within a few minutes with a really fast jaunt.

Pretty sure Rocket dislikes the "accessibility" of mainstream games .

Don't be surprised if you're walking , itching and crapping your way to your next can of beans .

I undestand the reasons why is this being suggested, but I think that slow players will just become easy prey for bored snipers and pot shot lovers.

hopefully all the military grade sniper rifles will be MUCH MUCH MUCH more rare, as will be all the ammo

if you're really that bored that you use one out of your two rounds to kill someone, well you suck anyways

I don't know about a stamina system in a game as big as this, but I'd like to see the amount of weight you are wearing (clothing, backpack, weapons) affect your movement speed and hunger depletion. Imagine a situation where you need that extra bit of speed to survive, so you drop your backpack to run a bit faster. I also believe run speed should be slowed in general, and sprinting be a bit more limited.

i love this idea, but i'd hate it if i kept tripping or was almost blind of things because my character was tired or running.
