Warning: CD-Key theft going on

Recommended Posts

Shortly after posting in the Troubleshooting section some guy with 0 posts pm'ed me with a link to some "fix" (it was a youtube video) - that should help me.

In the description there was a file attached which was a cd-key stealer (I have some reversing skills). It seems it transmits the cd-keys to the site (www.dayzkey.netne.net) via http-get request. You can put that domain in your hosts file if you want some protection against stealers (I came across it a few times already).

I was very upset that there is neither any warning in this forums about this, nor any measurments are taken against external links in PM's, I even heard from other people that they also got PM's luring them to some CD-key stealers.

You cant blame the forum for what is happening in the message system.

Your warning is appreciated.

Many forums have at least a big warning when pressing external links.

At the current state they should really set the system to completely block external links.

There was a warning like last month.

At this rate there should at least be some sticky in the most important sections.

im fairly sure pornsites have stolen my identity my dignity and any money i had in my bank account. this lookout for external links or dont download anything is like telling a kid to not take up smoking pot because he will die.

External Links are bad mmmmkay.

Maybe we should bloke the forums to over 18 then this problem would not come along.

Agreed. bit of common sense will allow people to avoid such a con, but again common sense these days doesn't seem to be too wildly available :S

The CD-Key stealer grabs your CD-Key from your registry files, decrypts and emails the hacker whilst replacing your CD-Key with a banned one.

Can the standalone include persistent registry CD-Key file so at a interval it checks the file and replaces if incorrect? This will stop people hijacking them

Goes without saying really. Common sense, their own stupid fault if they get hacked.

Do you really need a warning about external links? Are you that new to the internet? >:( The majority of thefts have nothing to do with external sites, but have tons to do with people downloading fake hacks that steal your legit key and replace it with a banned one.

why is decrypting it needed? you just need the hexvalue...

and i dont see why having 2 locations where the key is stored would do any good, as i would simply replace it at BOTH locations?

Is it? All I have read or heard officially is that players downloading hacks that turned out to be fake hacks that steal your CD key have been confirmed. Not any official word on websites that provide non-hack software doing this.

At this rate you should know by now that you dont click links from people you dont know

At this rate you should know people are always trying to steal your information and should have your own security measures

At this rate you should know that many forums warn against external links so why should you require it on every forum when you already know the danger?

Appreciate the warning, but dont blame the DayZ team or forum Admins for stupid shit like this

Hi. I have some experience with DayZ keystealers and such. I've made some and i've reverse engineered some. Most use external databases and are inserted via a php script. Some use email and I can access their email through this. But due to the simplicity of stealing keys there are many, many hosting services and adding a simple host file block WILL NOT help. The simplest thing to do is to not download anything related to dayz unless recommended by someone with experience.

The world of DayZ keystealing is quite large, with consumers and suppliers. I know people that sell key stealers and I know people that buy them. Theres large forums on buying keys that have been stolen and thus profit is made off of stealing. I know of people that have databases with up to 1000 arma keys and this will not stop until battle eye or bohemia interactive adds some kind of actual protection of cd keys.
