DayZ - Currency/Shops

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I just though about an idea that would add trading into the game as well as make an incentive for players to be more friendly.

Basically, we get a currency and we can exchange it for gear at new npc's. ( Nothing overpowered at the market though - basic supplies - maybe safe 20 slot storage??? ) Something along those lines.

Now how do we get the currency?

1. By killing someone and then looting their body ( dogtag? ) - 1 per a body. So you would have to kill shitload of people to get "money" - and also loot their bodies.

So..., snipers would have to actually get off their hill once in a while in order to get "the currency" up. That's a good side to it.

But 2nd way...

By helping people - we get 5x as much currency. Only thing thou - there should be a database of people who we helped already - so that people wouldn't just shoot/give bloodbags to their friends to farm money. That would encourage players to be friendly to others so that they get more money.

That's just a rough idea - maybe you guys got some thoughts on it?

Greetings,

MadMack

Dogtags? A vault with 20 slots? What the actual fuck. No, Jesus fucking Christ. Go find some new spawn and trade him beans for a torch.

Getting money by killing people may work with your drug dealer, not in DayZ.

i think rocket said he was leaning away from an in game currency system and more towards giving the community the tools to figure it out themselves.

No currency in a post apocalyptic world please. We have a perfectly fine barter system, and once we have base building, we can make our own trading posts.

Dayz is a hardcore open world survival game. Adding in a random shop and vault would really take away from the immersion. The currency is dayz is trade. "Hey I will give you 4 beans for those binoculars" that is how trade in dayz works. We don't need money. If we want more people in dayz to be friendly then my suggestion is to make ammo rare. Currently there is very little penalty for wasting bullets (plus with all the hackers spawning in weps and ammo are not making things better)

Why not...add side missions and gun shops, too then we can play DayZ Wasteland...

It's funny how people are so used to mechanics like these that they don't even realise how immersion breaking they are.

Money? Shops? This isn't "lets pretend there was a catastrophe that destroyed society".

Why would we need money in the apocalypse? You trade for, kill for, or scavenge what you want. It's very simple. Why would I buy things that I'm busy finding for free?

Barter is a natural mode of economy that would take over in the apocalypse. To make currency, you need laws. To have laws, you need government.

In short, no.

Sorry but NO!

currency in an apocalypse is nil, however banditry to gain goods is more realistic than Currency.

You're in an apocalypse and starving, but you have a few quid in your wallet, you gonna offer them that or take by force?

Cheque please!

It's more than that, you can have a currency without government, but then you can be certain that it is an object that combine several qualities:

  • High value for weight/volume, which makes it convenient to transport.
  • Quite rare because you are ment to use it as an exchange medium, so unless you where really lucky, aquiring it would mean trading it for something else.
  • Useful, but not too useful. It has to have atractive properties but not to the point where you wouldn't want to trade it back.

Food is a bad choice because while desireable, it lacks permanence, spoils and you need to eat it regardless. Also food isn't really rare for a trapper.

Bullets? Well metro 2033 tried the concept, you might want to fire the bullets tho..., but the brass casings could be seen as valuable because they are in finite quantity once industry stops and can be reused many many times.

They should make food rare, so that it gains a value for trading, but also reduce the the food timer, so you dont have to eat all the time, cuz thats just annoying. Ammo should definitely be a high valued item for trading, maybe not the cheapest brands, but the better quality ones.

I also had thought about the bullet thing, and yeah, I agree that bullets would be an efficient trade resource. I suppose if you want to call it a type of "common law currency" you could, but really all that means is that you are trading bullets for other useful items. So at the end of the day, I could still trade beans, or morphine, or a gun, for any other valuable object. I feel like "currency" implies that there are laws in place to regulate the value of those particular objects - whereas in the apocalypse, an objects value is regulated by it's a: function, and b: the immediate needs of players participating in the transaction.

I could see players designating currency themselves by operating bases or trade outposts, but of course it's all just a fancy name for "trading." Just as a practical example, you can't go into a supermarket and trade the clerk a can of beans for a bottle of water. Why? Because of laws, enforced by the government. But in DayZ, that might be the only option. What if neither player commenced in a trade has any "currency?" It just doesn't make much sense in a survival game to have anything of the sort.
