    books that unlock new skills.

*get's ALLLL the pieces to fix up a car* *writing appears* YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIX A CAR FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! I know this sounds like a dumb response, however it's true. DayZ shouldn't have an ''unlock'' system so to speak. YOU WANNA DO THIS? UNLOCK IT! (via reading the book) YOU WANNA DO THAT? UNLOCK IT!. It's a weird one this, I know Rocket himself has proposed and thought about this one I just don't know. Personally, I read a LOT of books. As a lover of books, It would be nice to have an evening stroll with my fellow survivors, looking for the ONLY book which will allows us to cook up some food. I'm sorry, I'm sorry...it's not sarcasm. Honestly!. It's just that I love this idea, and I hate it. It's a love hate thang we got going on here. Perhaps, you can carry only one specific book at a time. Okay, so eventually you want to fix up a boat, FUCK OFF to an island and feed yourself from fish and learn how to live a self sustainable life. That to me is 2 books. One for fixing up naval transportations such as boats which would include the skillset of navigational awareness on the ocean and another with self sustainable living which could cover fishing, hut building and harvesting water. You'd spend so long holding this book like say.....2-5 hours. BING! you've learned it. You fix up your boat, but realise before that you need to know Island survival. Go to the Library, find the book and this one takes longer, maybe 6-7 hours.....BING! you now obtain knowledge to achieve what it is you set yourself to do. NOW! perhaps you can only hold 2-3 skillsets and let's say by obtaining knowledge of the sea which covers over 3 books you would get perks..such as being able to drive MUCH BIGGER boats, or even if shipwrecks are included into the the standalone, then you're needed to board it. You may be able to wipe clean the knowledge and learn other skillsets, it's up to you. That's my thoughts.

    The surviving photographer

I know what you mean matey, like I said...this post is for shits and giggles, a camera as I am suggesting is completely useless in this environment, I'm merely pointing out that as mundane and useless a camera may seem, it can be used as a navigational/tracking device (if it was someone elses and you found it) or its for the LOLS adn you also pointed out the use as a flashbang, which I like. Thanks for the more useful comment matey, I'm beginning to witness idiots commenting stupid replies to what seems to actually be a good idea.

I was thinking firstly, maybe the JPG/PNG could save onto your computer OR if this standalone is going to be on steam then save onto your steam images however, just having them in the game to me seems more immersive I think. I like that you questioned the battery life, to me I thought about digital vs. film and it was a question on how far you're willing to take realism over gameplay. let's say digital, you could have an enormous amount of memory, and if you didn't you can simply delete your images and keep using it. for some reason that did not appeal to me. Now, with film you have this camera, maybe a disposable one with 15 shots available, you can't retake the shots and you cant delete them. Perhaps a Polaroid with a built photo printer. It can be possible to find Polaroid print outs so it gives you a reason to hold onto the camera rather than it ''taking up space''

    The surviving photographer

So, tearing myself away from the more serious posts I'd like to try something random and fun (well, to me). I love taking photographs, and I have been taking them a lot lately, subconsciously whilst on a small hike around Ireland I have been simultaneously taking photographs AND thinking of another idea I could throw on here for you guys. I know this idea could and considering SOME of the tards who immediately say ''NO!'' or ''GAY!'' this is just a small thing compared to my ''end-game'' proposal :P A camera to me has and always will be important to me whilst travelling around, taking photographs and letting others take them, it shows where I have been and who I have met, this idea didn't spring to mind until I recently found someone's camera on a small hike. I checked it out to see where they have come from to determine where they would be next so I could hand it in. so I thought 'hay' cameras in DayZ could be not only fun (taking images of specific moments, maybe camps you've found and raided, or even killed your first cow) however, learning from what I did and eventually found the owners of the camera, and knowing Rocket has very subtly included certain detective features of knowing the presence of players. e.g zombies that spawn in a small town, knowing you are far enough for them NOT to spawn indicates a player other than you has triggered them to spawn. also, dead zombies, players and animals are also my example of subtle indicators of players being there as he included the action to 'hide' the body. Let's say, you find a camera (as fresh spawn) you can take images of the people you meet, like the guys you skype with or strangers you stumbled across. Images of you in Cherno then your gang/squad make a camp..you take a snap of that too). Someone kills you, they have ALL that information. Where your camp is, even the funny shits and giggles. IF your camp is till active or something valuable like cars or even a heli location it could be possible for the 'finder' of the camera to flick through your images. I think for it to work in fairness and not have a 5TB memory card inside, maybe have a space of 15 pictures with a really nice effect. I KNOW people will say 'well, I have a PRNT SCRN button hangover!' ...I know this, but one mans tool is another mans weapon. Observe this as a piece of fun, or merely a tool for important information. I also know Rocket is paying attention to important stuff, and not shitty little things like a camera..it's an idea for shits 'n' giggles my fronds! It could be a nice little toy. Thanks, and keep surviving!

    Drinking from a water source?

Then as much as I loved your reply being both positive yet passive aggressive towards my comment, you wouldn't survive. Firstly, if I were your friend experiencing this together I mention that drinking the water would inevitably lead to 2 things. 1) Given that we had enough food and water in the first place you wouldn't need to drink from the pond/puddle as I would make sure we wouldn't leave the city until we had very thoroughly and analytically gathered enough basic survival resources to last us the trip more inland. However, ALSO given that you would attempt to drink water from a puddle to prove the point you are now I would AGAIN stop you. As, we would get to the first 3 miles and you'd cramp up protesting to stop every 5 minutes which would lead us to be exposed. Thus, give or take the years I have known you, which would result whether I'd take advantage of your physiological handicap, leave you to die; I will begin to say to you that you either has simple cramps and will eventually shit your pants due to diarrhoea OR begin to wonder whether or not you are infected, and I mean there is no possible way you would know you are infected given that a zombie could have bled, fell or if there digestive system is still working (wink wink) shat into the stream or pond infecting the majority of the fresh source of water. 2) Don't drink piss, theres a reason it comes OUT of your track of digestion and is only drank under extremely cold weather in attempt to keep your digestive fluids warm and active. If you wanna survive, stick with me and I promise I won't drop the beans and butt rape you pahaha. oh, and sorry for the long comment. :D please check out my post on the possible 'end-game' and zombies overrunning servers. But I loved the bear Grylls dig there ;) mwahaha

    Drinking from a water source?

Firstly, it's confusing for me. I'l say Yes because it'd be logical as a gamer to say ''hay, why not I can't refill a canteen since I have none but atleast allow me to drink from the RAW source of water and let me be on my way''. However, I'll also say no. I say this because what you would actually have to do if drinking EVEN from what seems to be a COMPLETELY fresh and clean source of water is you would have have basic equipment such as a boiling pan or something else to perform a similar job to concentrate and filter out the harmful substances from what seems like fresh water. Because there is a fresh water pond infested in ''fresh water'' fish and ''fresh water'' algae, would you consider drinking it before any form of preparation. Therefore, rather than having to collect all of that shit JUST to drink the god damn water you have a canteen which I think symbolizes that you have had to of gotten that to drink the god damn water. So, I'm sorry but logic in both the real world and ''game'' world implications point me to conclude the answer 'NO'. (I DID THAT IN ONE BREATHE)

    Thermal, Night Vision and Flashlights.

Very well written, logical and reasonable post. I 100% agree with this. There is nothing here I can complain about and nothing to correct as you have said it all. Take away the night vision and especially the thermal AWS scope on the L85A2. Natural, and artificial lighting is the direction this should go in terms of night-time combat and survival. Even being able to see in the dark should have consequences whether it's a flashlight or an M203 Flare as you suggested.

Sorry, I didn't know who you were speaking to me or Myke :P I prefer it when people reply either by quoting or by name. Sorry for getting confused :)

The 'End-Game' possibility and the over-run of infected/zombies

Cheers mate, yes it wouldn't work in the state it is now. DayZ needs this standalone to grow a bit more :P I won't be able to play DayZ in 2 WHOLE WEEKS :'(

    DayZ - Currency/Shops

I'm guessing it would have similar investigative mechanics as you would approach a survivors body. You clear the camp incase anything hostile is there. One thing that could be good as a give away of the location of the camp which could be hidden well is a pack of wolves or a bear scavenging for food. Thus, there had to have been people there to eat the food. Clear the camp, and approaching different parts of the camp would provide different pieces of vital information. So, if you scroll click on the camp fire itself, it'd tell you how long the campfire has been out, or if it is still lit, how long it's been on. A similar piece of information could be gathered from the ground around the campfire, the numbers of empty tin that could spawn around the campfire when a number of people sit in close proximity over a certain amount of time would give away their number. So, 3-4 empty cans mean there is 3-4 of them. Now, giving direction will be tricky to implement given that campfires, empty cans and a bear cannot talk. However, discomfort and distortion of some sort in the grass leading away could. So, in terms of coding this in you would have a typical proximity which could be the radius of the heat emitted from the fire, which will not only provide the heat but also trigger how many people are within that radius. When ALL players leave this radius and the fire is out this could trigger (on the ground) distortion of the grass somewhat pointing the direction they head. Sorry for babbling on, but I love this game.

    bring in some snow :D

YES, YES AND MORE YES!. I apologise for my over exaggerated response, but I am one with the cold. There is so much more than just the cold in terms of surviving in the snow; firstly, foot prints or vehicle tracks would an awesome mechanic. Being able to track a group of Bandits who are too clumsy to clean up there tracks would be pretty rewarding. Another thing is the possibility to include sled to carry equipment, meaning if you are to pull it would leave you more vulnerable than the other however could behave as a mobile tent, carrying all equipment and also could carry one person if he is incapacitated for a prolong period of time. I rant on too much, this would be awesome. I LOVE SNOW! BEANS FOR YOU SNOW MAN!

I like you way of thinking, I've always mentioned to friends there should be methods of tracking players and especially bandits. The information we would need is how many there was, how long they stayed and the direction they head. Nice thinking, my beans are yours.
