DayZ Development Blog #1: The end of the beginning

Recommended Posts

Rather have a fully working mod before working on a standalone. Going to double the amount of work he has to do so less updates.

Not to keen on the idea.

Bit of a side-track here but anyone know where you can grab this beauty at a higher resolution?

Yanno I'm like...totally happy for Rocket and all that.

But til I hear some engine details, what their plans are for fleshing this out and "taking it to the next level" I simply could not be bothered to give a fuck.

We knew this was coming. All that mattered was the when, and now all that matters is the details....which we don't have.

is happening relax... you sir got some trust issues.

Damn, way to be an asshole. Give them a bit of credit, there had to be a load of red tape and discussion between BI and Rocket for this to happen. Now its set and we can stop worrying about "If" it will turn standalone and focus on what is gonna be like/when its gonna be released.

Its not really about being an asshole. As I said I'm happy for Rocket, taking a mod to full on stand alone game status is seriously awesome.

I'm just in DILLIGAF mode cause its not like this was unexpected. BIS would have to have been insane to ignore the money DayZ has made them, and it was only a matter of time before they inked this deal. Regardless of the red tape and lawyers involved.

What I'm waiting for is engine details, expansionary plans to make all three "S" factors of the current game dynamic flesh out and be rewarding...yanno, the stuff thats going to make me decide to drop whatever the game is going to cost in the til.

I'm sure those details will come, just saying, jumping around like a schoolgirl cause we found out something we were already aware was likely to happen is sorta pointless.

Amazing news, and while I don't mind at all tossing my dollar at the development, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little miffed having bought ArmA 2 and will have to buy the standalone as well. Oh well, it is what it is. At least this way the money will go directly to Rocket.

I don't know what any of you think of Minecraft but I am super pumped to be able to play and watch unfold a game of great taste and get to interact with it every step of the way.

Each one of those alpha, then beta patches is going to be like a mini-christmas...

Thats great news but WTF???? I bought Arma 2 Combined Operations just for this, they said they gonna keep updating this btu I am 100 percent sure they are not going to do that! In the best case they will just hire some random kids found on the street to keep updating this mod!

Unfair!

I want to know engine details, i have always said i would hope he stayed clear of the Arma Engine and Bohemia should let him do whatever the fuck he want's, as it will turn to gold anyway and i have faith he will create something that's excellent, i do hope that the player cap can be increased significantly however. Think WarZ Player cap.

If you want engine details, read up on ARMA 3. Seems like a no-brainer.

If rocket wasn't going ot use the ARMA engine, what sense would this deal make?

And if he's going to use the ARMA engine, he's sure as hell not going to tie a brand new, freshly-launched project to a 4 year old engine that is about to be replcaed.

So he's going to use the ARMA 3 engine? Link?

If he uses the ARMA 3 engine, he's going to have to start all over again probably. Not sure how simple the process will be, but it will mean more work so less updates.

Why would he have to start all over again?

He has already ported DayZ to ARMA 3. It's up and running according to him, like weeks ago.

All he has to do is branch the ARMA 3 code and get to work.

I don't have a link, but what other engine would he possibly use?

Why would BI invest a ton of time and money into a brand new stand-alone game and then base it on a 4 year old engine that they're in the process of replacing?

It would be the most ridiculous decision in the history of game development.

And unless I'm mistaken they don't have any other extra engines lying around, right? It's either 2 or 3...

If DayZ is based on ARMA 2 they will have to continue to develop and support both engines simultaneously.

If DayZ is based on ARMA 3 they have a single engine and can focus all optimization, debugging and support efforts on that one engine, and share a ton of code with DayZ in order to improve and optimize that product simultaneously for half the cost.

Why would they keep two engines in house instead of one?

ARMA 3 is literally the only logical conclusion for DayZ. Nothing else makes sense.

If they're going to use the ArmA 3 engine how in the hell can we expect to get a standalone version any time soon? I find it hard to believe a standalone game using the engine is going to come out before ArmA 3 itself does. Since he's heading the team with BI behind him, he'll probably be using a heavily modified ArmA 2 engine capable of things the current engine just isn't.

Ok that's interesting information.

"according to him"

Yeah like other people have said, I'll wait till some gameplay footage of dayz in arma 3 before I get to happy.

The post Rocket made never mentioned anything about a standalone version soon. Just said it will be developed as a standalone game alongside the mod.
