Moses8711 1 Posted July 19, 2016 So I got day z on July 16, 2016. its now the 19th of July and I've logged in about 30 hrs lol. This game is so addicting, I've met a few players but they always seem to wanna kill me for my stuff lol. I've died 6 times so far, 4 times from other players, once from falling haha and starvation. So far so good. I'm so lost on the map I always seem to go in circles or get lost in the woods lol cant seem to figure out how to use the map or if I'm able too.
Parazight 1599 Posted July 19, 2016 That's fantastic. You'll love DayZ every day as long as you don't let the trivial things like death and getting lost bother you. There are a lot of online resources to enhance your adventures. Check them out. Good luck and have fun!

There's a lot of nuances to approaching other players with friendly intentions and even if you "do everything right" there's still a good chance it will end badly. On the other hand, things do work out well sometimes. After playing a while certain areas of the map will become familiar and your range will expand from there. You'll wander across some military installations and heli crashes and you'll quickly learn that they don't often bode well for friendly interaction because it's high-stakes for that high-end gear. And on that note, you'll die a thousand deaths so don't get attached to your gear. Take a deep breath, click respawn and make yourself a fresh new stone knife on the beach. ColdAtrophy 1850 Posted July 20, 2016 It's not about your stuff. I thought that at first too. But then I realized that most people get nothing usable out of killing others. It's just that the masses have been conditioned to think that's what you do when you see a man sized target - shoot it. All we've been playing for over a decade now are shooters and the risks associated with trusting someone else over the internet are well documented. They don't want your stuff really as proven by the piles of ruined gear most players leave in their wake. They just want you dead. You represent an unknown potential danger and the easiest way to deal with that is to murder you. Doing anything other than that takes courage and intelligence. If you want to join them, enjoy your buggy, ultra laggy Cawadoody (Now with 1000x more frustration and exploitation involved because we're masochists!). If you want to talk to them, give them no way of escaping while you hold the better position, point a gun at center mass, and be prepared for a 50/50 chance they're going to fuck you the first time you let your guard down assuming they don't start shooting when you initially corner them just out of spite. If you want to survive, learn to detect others first, avoid them unless you need to make contact for some reason (no idea why that would ever be needed since nothing is scarce and there are no environmental threats), and never ever bring a fire extinguisher to a boxing match. Bad things happen to good people when you bring a fire extinguisher to a boxing match. And now for the most important piece of advice that no one ever gives to new people: when you start to get frustrated (and you will eventually, the new game smell wears off after awhile), go play something else for however long it takes for you to come back and enjoy what's changed. A lot of people keep playing it even when the same bugs they are already pissed off about haven't yet been addressed to the point that they drive themselves into an internal frenzy that they need to vent and that's how we get forum user meltdowns, the graveyard, bans, and the entirety of the DayZ Reddit page.

I remember my first time playing DayZ, oh God, that was awesome! :) It's much better to play with group, they can show you things and in PvP it's much more easier to stay alive. If you want, add me on Steam, and I'll be happy to show you new stuff.

Post of the week! OP you will find yourself doing a lot of orienteering at first - trying to navigate from point to point, etc. the online maps (eg iZurvive) are extremely useful, as is a compass at first. After almost 4,000 hours in game, I know pretty much the whole western half of the map off by heart. Bits of the east are still a mystery though... Practical things, as Gary says, make a stone knife almost immediately (just search for stones on stony ground, when you find a stone, point it back at the ground and 'craft stone knife'. This is invaluable, especially for opening cans). Use apple trees for food and hydration. Use water pumps instead of ponds to drink, especially at first. And then, depending on your playstyle, get off the coast. Lots of people will tell you not to get attached to your gear, and they're right, espeically if you're a PvPer. But my playstyle is simply to stay alive for as long as I can, so I tend to get good gear and I do tend to get a little attached to it. I'd be happy to meet up if you like - PM me. irl-calibre 744 Posted August 14, 2016 to use the ingame map, you need to drag it from your inventory into your hotbar and then press the allocated key to open the map, press esc to close it again when you're finished.
