Hold Ups, Stick Ups, Non-Lethal Robbery (Dear Bad Guy)

Recommended Posts

Holding up an armed player is arguably the most challenging thing to try in DayZ.

Many players like myself, if caught completely off guard, would RP being robbed and be happy to leave with our lives without a thought of revenge. We actually pine for this after being KoS'd. "Why didn't they try to rob me?"

People who might be perceived as "carebears" are probably just trying to stay immersed in the perma-death aspect of DayZ and try "all the corners of the sandbox", so to speak.

I am personally anti-KoS and I've become good at avoiding, escaping, or fending off players who just want to fight.

My point of this thread is to make a case for trying to rob someone more often than just shoot them.

You can preserve the condition of their gear, and have some kind of interaction while you attempt to bind them and possibly put a hood on them.

There are ways to keep people from communicating with friends over external chat to call for help and safe ways to disarm people.

I know the game is lacking in some elements that may encourage this style of play but I'm hoping we see more "party bus to thunderdome", "catch and release", and pure highway robbery in the future!

Thanks for reading!!

it's defiantly more challenging to rob especially when you're alone but probably more entertaining for both parties, just some rather not take the risk etc

nice footage!

Yeah, I hoped this topic would at least promote the ideas of stick ups, etc.

Also, the party bus returns soon, and it opens the game up to larger mobile groups capturing people for these purposes and more....

That second video (and the first to an extent) is the reason why I don't typically surrender to other players.  People just sorta fuck with you in the majority of cases.

I usually KOS but I'll give people the chance to surrender if the opportunity comes up.  When I do, I take the minimum from them and treat them with respect.  I don't make goofy voices and try to pretend to be a hardass or whatever because I don't want that done to me.  I can understand RPing and maybe some people are into being treated like that, but I want to give the people I'm holding up as much reason as possible to play along and have a good time.  They should leave the experience feeling positive, so that next time maybe they'll play along again.

That said, some times I'm too lenient and get shot for it.  But it really doesn't bother me at all, because regardless of the outcome it's still a more interesting scenario than just shooting each other.

I just managed to rob a guy at the Balota airstrip with nothing but an empty Magnum. The whole thing lasted probably less than 30 seconds, but it was more fun than I've had in hours of running about collecting stuff. I could've shot him afterwards, but I figured why bother, so instead I told him there was more stuff to find in Balota town, and took off in the opposite direction.

I'll add one thing.  I recently surrendered to some people who I actually had the advantage over just to see what would happen.  I walked in with my hands up and was pretty surprised to find that you can't drop your weapons/items with your hands raised which seems like a pretty stupid design decision to me.  I wanted to throw my gun on the floor but couldn't do it.  I kinda get the idea of not being able to manipulate your inventory because you're surrendering, but personally I think that level of restriction should be reserved for if you're actually bound.

If some one wants to risk just keeping you in the hands up animation, they still have time if you try to perform an action and that should be a choice.  I don't see much wrong with a person pretending to surrender, manipulating their inventory on the sly just because the person holding them up was too careless.  To be clear in my case, I wasn't trying to be shady, I legitimately just wanted to drop my gun.

They didn't know what to do with me and shot me any ways.  Booring

The master of hold ups, Sobieski, would agree, and like this post.

Same applies to me. (Although I don't really hold-up players, and have a non-threatening play style anyway... But I agree 100%, it's better than no interaction at all.)

They should make it so when you are arms raised, people around you can manipulate your inventory but you cannot, I guess.

Though I cannot take personal credit for the creation of the videos above, I will take it as a compliment that you enjoy what I find and share.

Thanks, Sneaky!

I guess it's easier to pull a robbery off on an RP server it's true, but who wants easy? ;)

I think the catch and release videos are from public servers.

I kinda wish there were servers where the TtK was much higher and non-lethal weapons were really effective and varied. Would make for interesting encounters.

These holds up are done on normal hardcore servers.

Thus the strategy in forcing them to count "1 2 3" in direct chat is used, it's interfere with the communications of any 3rd party program.

On a rp server you wouldn't really need to worry about it, due to the threat of being banned by breaking some ridiculous rule.

Ok, if you could just raise both your hands for me IRL. Now try to take your wallet out of your pocket and slap it on the desk on front of you, without lowering either hand. As you can see there is method behind this madness..

Except that method doesn't apply to any other animation.  I can manipulate my inventory with 2 hands on my rifle/melee weapon.

It is just a shitty situation where you have to lower your hands to drop your weapon, because if I'm holding some one up and see them dropping their arms it's going to make me more jumpy.  And I'm not very jumpy to begin with, but most people are waaay too jumpy.  I'd also reckon most people don't realize this is the thing.  So in my situation when I didn't and started telling the guy "huh, weird, it won't let me drop my gun" I'm sure that sounded pretty suspicious too.

It's not the end of the world, but I think it would be a good change that makes sense.  Or else letting other people manipulate your inventory like biohaze said at least.

The two last times I was held up I complied and was shot anyways for no apparent reason so no more of that.

Biohaze wish you would join us, from all of your friends videos sounds like you would be an awesome fit, except the part that many of us will KOS and PVP totally.

We don't always kill others though. Either way, if your interested in just hanging out your more then welcome any time. You do sound like a blast to play the game with, as many of us are older and we all tend to play pranks like that.

The last time i did something cool, i ran over a guy with the truck by accident, his buddy was trying to shoot me, but accidentally opened and jumped in the truck. I moved real quick and hijacked him to the big city where all i heard was him asking me to stop, STOP please!!! almost cried. Then i hooked up on TS where we had a firing squad ready for him too.

It was a hoot, seriously fuxored up man ahahah.

I am trying to find the video of it, as i never completed its clip for utube..

Oh and i ran over the other 3rd friend of his too :)

I'd be fine with others being able to manipulate inventory for you while you have hands up though.

One example of my thinking : You're holding someone up and they have hands in the air, but unknown to you they have primed and dropped a frag at their feet without dropping their hands.

I complied the last time I was held up and I had very minimal gear.

The guy actually apologized before shooting me because I was "so cool".

I'll still go along with a robbery if caught completely off guard.
