Make train locomotives function with possible ability to put tents on flatbed cars

Recommended Posts

30 Jerry cans of fuel...Check

24 Glowplugs..............Check

6 Truck Batteries.........Check

Lets do this.

I would love to see this in the game. Mobile bases. As a side note it would be cool to build a base on the back of a chassis truck, wooden camper so to speak.

Train Robberies,

Mobile gun platforms,

Train Sim RP.

Thanks for reading.

Always wondered why they did not went this way in the first place and made cars instead.

My guess is that with the current engine framework they cant achieve trains. Lets hope the enfusion engine changes that it would be awesome!

This conversation has taken place many times before.  I too would love to have trains, and it would be possible (people have made mods with working trains and locos in Arma2 and even a couple of mods based off Dayz Mod), but for the most part it wouldn't be realistic.  I'm not too familair with European/Russian rail equipment (I'd love for a dev or a Euro trainbuff to chime in and tell me what model they used), but an SD40 (which looks simular to the locos in game in size) have a 3000-4000 gallon fuel capacity, a jerry can isn't going to cut it.

Holy how that fuel tank size. Not going to cut it for sure, I hope they can fairy tale it in somehow tho.

It was said it will not happen. Not before 1.0 atleast.

Doubt it, but railways don't exactly refuel from jerry cans, modern US rail facilities have dedicated fueling stations where the loco pulls up, a crewman hooks up a hose to the tank and starts up a pump.

But, that 30 jerry cans of fuel might be enough to get it fired up and either closer to another fuel source or to such a facility as mentioned above, then you'd have a lot of fuel that would last a few days of medium use.

The biggest hassle I would see after getting it repaired and fueled would be keeping tracks clear.  The main line we have access to is single track, with only a couple of sidings here and there, with most of them being in the cities.  That and there's a lot of rolling stock and other locos on the track that would be blocking.  It would be a lot of effort but could have big payoffs, you wouldn't put barrels or tents on flatcars, you could load boxcars up with loot, with possibly a passenger car or a caboose to transport other players (assuming we don't just sit in the boxcar or on the loco).  You and your group could clear the tracks from Vavilovo to Kamenka and use the train to move loot between the major cities to the closest point you set your base up, assuming you don't make your base on the rails or in a railyard.

Part of the track is broken though.

Duct Tape fixes everything.

What would be cool is if you had to fix the tracks with parts and tools, as well you would have to repair the train itself and the engine. there would be one train that could go from east to west on the northern line and one that would run the north to south coast. they could be disabled like any train by derailing etc so it should have some ability to defend itself. would add a lot of cool events for servers and players and would take a lot of folks working together or unknowingly working together.

It takes aprox. 1 manhour to replace one railroad tie (using a peice of equipment such as a back-ho).  Trains are actually VERY easy to derail as well, a 1" diameter branch can derail a 45 ton locomotive (that's small in loco terms).  The tracks being out of gauge or just a switch left half thrown will put it on the ground.  At slow speeds you have a disabled (but rescueable) locomotive, higher speeds you have a fucking mess that would be a pain in the ass to deal with WITHOUT a zombie apoc.

Please search before creating new threads OP.

If we all add our ideas for things to a single thread per topic we have a better chance for the best ideas to be heard.

Thanks!

Hand cars are a common suggestion too.

Trains can be done, but half the railroads are blocked by debris, other trains, and such. Furthermore, you need to keep in mind that the railway across Chernarus is single track only, so you should only be able to in this case have access to one working train on the whole map. Plus, given that the train can only go along tracks, people are always going to be stealing it off you, it wouldn't be worth investing in, and some of the track layout across Chernarus would certainly only be able to support trains moving at very low speeds, particularly the tracks around Svet and Novo.

Even if you plan on using it to move bulk cargo/loot, how are you going to transport it to the train? There aren't any nearby rail lines to any of the major military bases. There really wouldn't be any reason to do trains, except for fun.

Same way you move it from where you loot it to your truck/vehicle.  You park the train in the middle of Cherno, if you have a team, someone watches it while the others scavenge.  THey come back when they're loaded up and drop off.  If they're done you load up and GTFO onto the next town.

I do see a lot of potential for trains in DayZ (or other games), but for now that's all it is, potential, not a payout for either players or devs (at least for the moment).  Depending on how base building works and how they do the crafting and resource gathering.  IE you can gather cement from the quarry at Solnichniy, finished lumber from Berezino's mill, fuel/diesel from the dock at Electro, and take that all to your clan's base at the end of the line near Kamenka.

They all sound like good ideas. Hand cars too. I guess if you want to say the word realistic this or can't do that. to be realistic would mean that you could do it, even if it took 50 years lol
