Server removal

Recommended Posts

One of the more fundamental problems with persistence is that depends entirely on the server in question being maintained. Twice in this patch I've had servers taken down, or broken down. In the most recent case, having apparently learned my lesson from the disappearance of a clan server, I stashed my M4 and other high value stuff in a barrel on one of GamingDeluxe's official UK servers - thinking that an official server stood a higher chance of remaining consistent, or at least existent.

I was wrong - the server has disappeared entirely.

I realise that persistence is a bit of a lottery, but having recently struggled to survive a bout of cholera, this is (to put it mildly) quite annoying. I'm wondering whether there should be some sort of mechanism to at least give people fair warning where server owners are about to take them down.

3 months ago way back at 0.57 I decided to favourite 3 servers I could use for bases. Only 1 survived so I'm using it. You should do the same man.

Yep, this is an inherent problem with player-hosted servers. There aren't any "official" servers besides the handful that are experimental.

I've been curious as to how they're going to address this.

Why not just go to any official server? Gamingdeluxes official UK servers, doesnt seem official to me.

From my impression official servers are called Dayz US East 1-1 or any other country and region, in the same fashion.

This was "DayZ UK 5-71 hosted by GamingDeluxe.com". It's one of a series of these servers, and (depending on your definition of 'official') seems no less official than your impression of an official server.

I mean this in the sense that they are not (as far as I can tell) player-hosted.

Had no problems with these servers so far, had my camp there for about 1 month, ever since persistence was wiped. But I dont know whether they are official either, there is a just lot of servers named in similar fashion.

Anyway, I would suggest you try out one of those.

They go like this:

DayZ XY #-# (Public/3PP:ON/Persistence:ON) ####### - Hosted byG

examples:

DayZ DE 2-2 (Public/3PP:ON/Persistence:ON) 124426 - Hosted by G

DayZ FL 2-14 (Public/3PP:ON/Persistence:ON) 129488 - Hosted by

I've had a luck of stashing items on 3 servers which all disappeared in a matter of couple of days. That's the only 3 times I've tried making a a small camp so I gave up on that. Just my luck :)

Official means hosted by Bohemia. I have never seen any gamingdeluxe servers popup in any EXP environment for example.

Solution...

Private servers with a good community and owners/moderators that communicate what is going on. Anything like that will have warnings as to when persistence might be wiped or what is going on with the server. In fact some of those communities take votes from the players as to what setting they want.

I think the only realistic solution from the player perspective is to find a long-standing private clan shard and join up there. Of course, that means there's a clan on that server, so chances are that you're either going to have to join that clan, play pure hermit, or die often; most clans are strictly PvP at the moment.

An additional consideration is the small number of long-standing clan servers and the long-standing tales of admin abuse on many of them. I won't name them publicly, but I can think of a handful of long-standing clan servers in the SA that are well-known for being run by megalomaniac and/or misanthropic server admins. There really are very few places where persistence is a viable option at the moment.

I disagree, all the dayz servers hosted by vilayer or fragnet and the ones I mentioned above are all quite safe solutions...just avoid fragnet ones for EXP interference then. and mookie why bother making this threat if you dont take any advice anyway???

What a stupid, stupid waste of time.

by "official" i understand those servers, which the hosting companies are providing (which they have to as part of their contract with bi). if a company shuts down those servers regularly id try to switch to another hoster.

experimental servers are always cursed to death an will vanish as soon as the build goes stable.

Come play on DayZ US Central 1-55 with me.  This has been my preferred official server since .53.  The only time it went down was in .55 when the jail lootsplosions were crashing the game; I complained and was told that it was taken down for examination.  I may have had a hand in wrecking the server that time too, as I had been testing loot seeding at VMB by hauling dozens of bags of gear to the area to see how loot cycling was working.

It is not a 'high pop' server ATM, but there is a fairly consistent recurring crowd. Last night, I found two camps and three trucks, including a truck tent, and mil tent, as well as three M4s and enough magazines to fill a barrel.  Now all I need is more people to come raid my extensive network of barrel stashes, and move my trucks when I'm not looking.

Huh? What threat? What advice am I not taking?

As should be obvious from my first post, IME the UK GamingDeluxe servers are precisely not 'quite safe', even though they are as 'official' as those you cite.

Anyway, Rick's point stands as far as I can see. If, in principle, a server can be taken down or fall over at any time, persistence is always a risk - which is why I'll only be stashing stuff in extremis from now on.

You people are missing the point. You want a stable server, rent one yourself. Problem solved

Yeah. Pay-to-play. Problem solved. <_<

Someone had to pay for the servers. As long as a server host follows the TOS they should have every right to do with their server as they please. If the game had a monthly sub, BI could run their own servers and would get rid of all admin abuse.

    No

-  official does not mean "hosted by Bohemia"

check it out:

According to Fragnet  - "Fragnet is an Official hosting provider for DayZ"

any DayZ server hosted by Fragnet is an "official server"

for instance:

dayzTV is hosted by Fragnet -the DayZTV website is owned by Fragnet  (check the IPs) (check the Who-Is)

Fragnet "is an Official" hosting provider for DayZ

therefore DayzTV is an "official server"

(I am quoting from Fragnet)

What does this mean?

well, so far it means - what Fragnet says:  all DayZ servers are official unless they are pirate illegal DayZ servers

Do you have a list of servers hosted by BI ?

Or a list of servers paid for by BI, where BI has hired them from the GSPs and BI administer those servers ?

Or a list of servers donated by the GSPs for BI own use, where BI administer those servers ?

Show me that list please?

thanx in advance..

You are right, I was wrong about the definition. Regardless, what I meant to say is, there is a shitton of servers in the manner you described which are 100% safe to use.

Example: Any server with 129488 in the servername. These have never failed me once.

So yeah, if you want a list, type that number in the filter section. All those servers should be safe to use. Whether they are official or not remains unknown to me. I guess by that definition you gave they are. These are unmoderated servers that simply run on an automated12h restart timer, nothing else.

So, with all due respect, its fucking retarded to act as if there are no safe servers and the game is unplayable and bla bla. Not saying anyone does that of course ;););)

Yes - I noticed the other current thread on this subject (see link), and followed a comment posted by Steak and Potatoes that got me interested. That thread asks why "BI-agreement" servers are sometimes not reliable, or sometimes change or go offline - so it seems.

I only checked 8 or 9 of the "free" <provided-by-agreement> servers that the GSPs must provide, and found a few of them have been hired out to paying clients. This may be temporary, or an error, or a one-off situation. Perhaps this has only happened with one GSP. However, servers that players think of as being "official" servers (this is the wrong name for them) do not act as expected in some cases.

Since this morning, the Gameservers list of "demo servers" (Steak gives a link to it) has been taken down; probably to be updated. If it needs updating I guess that list of "open" numbered servers must change ? (unless perhaps this is just a Wednesday night problem?). All I point out is that numbered, unamed servers - like the example you give - with no paying 'owners' - DO change sometimes, or they may be hired out (as public or private, to paying admins), or may go offline, therefore ATM they may not be reliable.

I dont know how often this happens, or if it is common or very rare.

I explain this on the other thread:

https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/225152-official-servers-going-dark/page-2#entry2314584

https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/225152-official-servers-going-dark/page-2#entry2314651

Hope I am not too boring (sorry jayfkay) : What are often called "official" servers on this forum, are servers that must be provided by the GSPs at their own expense, because of their agreement with BI.

[edit:] Your example - 129488 - only points to a Gameservers instance - it could be public, clan, admin-owned, open-to-all, "PVP at Berezino" - I see one called "Unfriendly" (lol) - or any other type of SA 'server' that exists.  Go to Gametracker and put 129488 in the search "Matching" parameter, you will see what I mean.
