The Little Things

Recommended Posts

It's been a while since i created a thread and considering i am bored out of my head at work i thought i'd, as Shia Labeouf would say, "Do it!"

I was pondering the small and possibly insignificant things that could be added to DayZ that could/would make it a more immersive, authentic or interesting place.  Nothing too big, just those little things that you would expect to see/do that aren't in game atm, or never will be added.

My 2 cents is:

A readable newspaper (the final edition of the Chernarus Times before civilisation collapsed) though this could be construed as giving a back story, something the devs are loathe to do.

Being able to scavenge rags from all that bed linen we see inside buildings...there have been numerous times i have sat bleeding out, ragless, next to a fully made up bed.

What do you think? Anything? Nothing? Happy as it is?

Back to work!

I'd love to see newspapers, and a couple variations would be nice. It could be vague of course, because let's face it, when is the press ever specific (And truthful?). That way, backstory isn't really revealed, and we still get something new and interesting to read.

Exactly.  There are a couple of low res newspapers lying around the floor of Chernarus, and one of them does seem to have an article on Madonna.....i'd love to know if she was zombified or not!

I like the idea of a bus map, very basic but showing all the bus stops around Chernarus.

I think some ambient litter floating through the cities and towns as well...i see that dragonfly often enough, a few more pieces of litter would be nice.

Birds as well, rats maybe, even a stray dog or cat dashing through the townships.

Great ideas.

I would like to see picutres in houses of people who lived there. A family which had a picnic at black lake, workers who made a group photo at kamensk mine, veterans in their mil uniform infront of a hanger and so on. The pictures should be make with the character models which we (will) have as survivors, same clothes which we can wear, etc.

But I think it would be too much work...would be great anyway:-)

there are lot's of little details we can think of, i really like the idea of bus map.

first one i can think of it's not small by any means but adds a lot, random interiors.

i really like to have some items and mechanics that just add fun to the game, like Water gun, toys, mini-games, an evil laugh emotion with random evil laugh sounds (like Muhahahaha, Ha ha ha ha ha ...)

a currency to the game would be nice, like you have coins (actual coin item) and you can collect those, then it's a currency in the game, you can actually buy some beans from someone.

once basebuilding is in, i really like to have signs (just like rust), stickers, bar-B-Q, maybe catch a bird and put it in a cage? :D

there is like a lot i can think of

Random interiors does sound very intensive.

But it would be nice to have a few more touches here or there to make buildings lived in or as scenes of struggle, etc.  The populace would also have flocked to police stations, hospitals and churches in such a crisis yet these buildings suggest nothing really untoward happened.  Mass graves in the churchyard,  long forgotten dead prisoners in their cells,  loads of filled bodybags in hospitals, etc etc

Hopefully there are plans to apocalypse-ise areas, though it would be quite a job.

The problem with a newspaper is that realistically, it should be written in Chernarussian(Czech). There's no reason for English language newspapers to be floating around in my opinion however the devs may disagree seeing as most of the books in game are in English. On that note i would love it if they added some books in Czech and Russian to the mix, it would really add to the immersion.

'Civilized' animals like rats, pigeons, cats and dogs turned feral would be great. Packs of dogs would be a much better fit as hostile animals than wolves and mousetraps could work the same way for rats that snares do for rabbits

Generally the food situation should be less of a hunter and farmers paradise and more like the siege of Leningrad, necessity requiring the eating of rats, cats, candle wax and even each other.

One other thing, it would be really interesting to hear from someone from the Czech Republic on what common household items you would find in rural areas IRL that are missing in game.

Not sure if these have been discussed before, but anyway.

Idea No 1:

Once persistence is fully operational I would like to see a loot placement system for building interiors. Say for example a trader wants to set up shop in a mini mart or super market, instead of dropping items randomly on the floor creating a mess, I would like to be able to place items from hands to shelves to offer a better display and increase business.

In houses, worktops could be used for storing tools or equipment (knife, lamp, gas stove) and also store tins of food/drink cans in the cupboards. Hang wet clothes on a washing line outside or hang (dry) in a wardrobe. Maybe even fill a bookshelf with books. Gardening tools could be hung up on nails in the shed. I would prefer it to be random placing rather than repetitive set locations.

Worrying about someone finding your stuff is half the fun in this game and finding someone elses stuff is the other half, especially if they have gone to a lot of effort to make it look pretty.

Idea No.2:

A hygiene system integrated with the health sytem might also be interesting. Washing hands (or alcohol spray) before eating to avoid tummy bugs where you might vomit the food you just ate. The more disgusting or dirty the game you are playing the more you require to clean i.e. looting decomposed bodies, hand to hand fighting with zombies, repairing/refueling a vehicle, diseased or infected animals that require you to examine them, check animal limph nodes for swelling/discolouration, look for ticks (chance of debillitating sickness that is uncurable), fleas that transfer and make us itch uncontrollably at the most awkard of moments and worms in the intestine that require large amounts of alcohol (incapaciting us) to kill them or antibiotics or you can just eat for two.

I realise there is bleach at the moment but that should also make you sick if you dont wash your hands after using it or just wear gloves 24/7 except when eating and drinking. I think there should be a single recreational building (golf club, gym or some form of cherno related sport, I do not fancy taking a shower in the barracks at NWA) with a functioning rainwater harvesting system and facilities to bathe/shower. As in real life the best item of loot could be a fresh dry towel closely followed by a bar of soap.

Or we could just spend all day pvp'ing in cherno.
