emuthreat 2837 Posted September 20, 2015 So I was running around today looking for a truck to drive the helicrash loops, and I found two of them in their spawn locations, and another one crashed into a tree. I had a pristine battery, and a pristine glow plug, as well as a gas can that I had just refilled myself. None of the trucks would start with the battery and glow plug in the inventory, and I could not get them to accept fuel from the can; I couldn't even turn on the lights. Is there some kind of trick to these things now, or should I be writing up a bug report? I plan on trying the same trucks later tonight and tomorrow, as well as going to find a couple different trucks.

So not just put them in the inventory. BTW, if you later remove the battery and glowplug and your inventory in the truck is full they won't be accepted, you will have to have space reserved for them, so a block of 8 slots and 1 for the plug. Fuel, the trucks were probably already full of gas. I am assuming you go to fuel tank on the right side. Edited September 20, 2015 by SAK

I'll go try again. Edit: Yup, I was putting them in inventory instead of in the inventory header box. Thanks for the quick helps. Bororm 1156 Posted September 20, 2015 So I need to drag battery and plug onto the grey header box, above the inventory matrix? I'll go try again. Yep. They attach to the truck, rather than being in the inventory slots. There's occasions where the truck is essentially destroyed/the engine is damaged and it won't start. But in your case it sounds like only the one by the tree would potentially be that way.

Little embarrassed I didn't accidentally do it right one of the dozen times I tried. Hey, at least I got a full gas can to haul around now.

Little embarrassed I didn't accidentally do it right one of the dozen times I tried. Hey, at least I got a full gas can to haul around now.Yeah, took me a while to figure it out too, opening the hood and trying 100 positions around the truck to find the way :). After that I had to figure out I need to reserve slots in the inventory of the battery won't be accepted. Also counter intuitive (or a bug) because when the battery and plug are in you can fill the inventory 100%.

Bororm 1156 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Yeah DayZ in general is pretty obscure about how to do anything. Personally I like that about it, finding things out either through trial and error or word of mouth is better than tutorials and in game pop up info plastered all over the place. Every now and then it can be difficult though. I'll point out another kinda weird thing with the inventory of trucks. If you don't have the room for the item in your own inventory, you can't take items from the truck into your hands. At least in my experience. So if you're trying to pull out a melee weapon, but have one already on your back, you have to drop that one first. Likewise, if you're trying to just grab an item in your hands and don't have the slots for it to potentially fall into in your inventory, you have to make space. I think you can possibly just drop them to the ground first too. It seems true for most items except those that are exceptionally large like barrels. igor-vk 909 Posted September 20, 2015 There should be separate inventory for parts and separate for cargo. I hope devs pay more attention to this

At least the post was appropriately titled, as I was indeed doing it wrong. Btw, you'll have the same problem with barrels when you are trying to tan leather. It always pays to click or drag items on the status line (the top bar) of the inventory, instead of the inventory itself. I think that's how everything in Dayz is gonna be combined in the future, though there might always be another way to make it work.
emuthreat 2837 Posted September 20, 2015 Did you try logging out and logging back in?Tried everything but watching the video results for my google search on how to start V3S. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and start wasting the time to watch 5 videos until I find what I'm looking for, rather than just thinking I can skim 5 tabs for helpful text to get the answers. Some parts of this future we live in annoy me. No worries. Btw, you'll have the same problem with barrels when you are trying to tan leather. As long as this mostly pointless help thread is up, do you know of any good text format information that stays somewhat current? DayZDB and Wiki were no help at all. Thanks for the additional info, it saved me from a certain face palm in a few hours. There should be separate inventory for parts and separate for cargo. I hope devs pay more attention to thisThere eventually will be a functional, spatially accurate, engine compartment for all of those parts; and hopefully you will have to learn enough about basic engine mechanics to do a visual check for what is missing or appears to be ruined. Taking what Bororm said about things being obscure, I think it is fine if you have to grope around for the answers, as long as they are intuitive and make sense compared to their real life counterparts. But when stuff like this truck system gets put out in a placeholder format, like having to place things this grey box for truck parts to work, it would be SUUUUPER appropriate if they mentioned those things in the patch notes. They did tell us how the yet-to-be implemented system is supposed to work, but failed to mention that until we get the trucks fully fixable, they had this strange quirk.Just because I'm such a fan of simile, I'll compare it to a poorly grounded appliance, and the need for a warning to unfamiliar users to ground themselves to the plumbing before turning it on.
