Things the SA needs to borrow from the Mod.

Recommended Posts

I played a ton of the mod back before DayZ got really popular and then ruined by hackers. So long I awaited for the SA and two and half years later here we are. There are alot of things the SA does very well, but I feel as though the SA really doesnt capture what made the original mod so much fun. Here I'm going to outline a few suggestions that I think should be implemented to the SA.

Zombies:

- The dev team should consider spawning zombies by proximity instead of trying to populate the entire map like the mod did. It least for the short run while they figure out whatever they are doing now. As it stands there are very few zombies in this game which is silly considering this is DayZ. Mowing down hordes of the undead was great in the mod. You would fire an AS50 and basically have to execute an entire village because the sound would attract so many. I understand the downside of this method was that people could determine if someone was in a city at a distance but I don't believe this was ever really that big of a problem. Finding someone in a city is a task within itself even knowing if they are there plus you had to deal with the zombies too.

Map:

- Players should start with a map. It takes forever to find all the pieces to one and everyone uses dayzdb.com anyway so whats the point? I'd rather not spend my time alt-tabbed away from the game. I could only imagine how newer players are dealing with this. Having waypoints was a nice quality of life feature, I would take it over the "realism" of not having one.

- Additions to the map are nice but I feel as though the map is too big now. On a 50 man server I never seem to find anybody. It makes the game feel very empty. In the mod there were pretty much 5 places where players congregated (NW AF, Electro, Cherno, Stary, Balota) but now there simply too many places to go. I don't think you should downsize the map but I think there should be a consideration of adding events in the game that bring in player congregation (I have an example in my post history).

Ultimately I want DayZ to be the best game it can be but theres alot missing that made the mod so popular.

Being able to tell somebody was in a town just because you saw zombies there as one of the biggest things I was happy to be away from with SA ...  I think they are on the right track with what they are doing if people would just give them the time to actually do it.  Game development takes years of work and anyone thinking different is ignorant.  IMO one thing I really hope that standalone does that the mod had map wise was the mod seemed to give a much better feel that an apocalyptic event had happened and not that everyone just kinda vanished.

Every thread, every single one has one of you guys screaming "ALPHAR!!!! ITS IN ALPHAR!!!"

We are all fans, thats why we are here. Doesn't mean we need to feel threatened at the first inkling of criticism.

Lol ... we are all fans but by god we will take every opportunity to disparage every bit of work you've done on the game! ..... that your attitude? Because that's how you come off frequently.   People keep bitching about things that are very obvious placeholders or WIP so ya ... alphur is usually a very valid answer but people get mad because thats not what they want to hear.

Answer to what? You people throw it at everything. And of course no one wants to hear it, its all you fanboys(different than fan) have to have to say.

On Topic. Even though they have developed what used to be the northern forests, perhaps they could expand the physical size of the map to give us that back. There was a period when i lived in that forest.

So he wants the map downsized because he can't find anyone to kill...

I advise call of duty if you want small maps guaranteed to find someone

Proximity-zombie spawning was one of the worst things about the mod, though, because you weren't actually being attacked by a horde of zombies that was already there, you just fired off a round and endless numbers of them kept spawning over and over again. The fact that you could use it to tell where players were, while I agree that it was not some rampant horrible problem, is not something that anyone was too fond of either. I like the directions the devs have taken (see random open/closed doors) to make it harder to tell at a glance where people have been and get you to actually look around.

As for spawning with a map - no. The mod only had that for a brief time but it was removed later. The fact that you can already just check back and forth on a website is already enough, even though it's really borderline exploitation. It isn't supposed to be easy to find your bearings if you're not well versed with the map. That's the entire point of why you don't just spawn with a compass, map, and GPS.

Not ...... much, in my opinion.

The Standalone really needs to be its own game, to "stand on its own feet", as it were. And I really don't want much more from a military simulator anyways.

I think the current zombie system is better, or should I say [hopefully] will be when it's done.

The potentially cool thing about the current system is that you could clear a town of zombies and once they include base building you could fortify a town. In the old system you'd just have zombies spawn inside whenever someone was around or spawned in.

The other potentially cool thing is finding zombies outside of the towns. Say someone is chased into the woods by zombies, they die or get away, I believe in the current system the zombies stay around that area, or meander in the vicinity. That means you can be minding your own business in the wilderness, or running around in the dark only to have the shit scared out of you by random zombies.

Of course they really need to work on increasing their number, but hopefully if all goes to plan they will turn out pretty nicely.

Well said.

I disagree, but its defiantly a worthwhile viewpoint.

Honestly I would be happy if they just let the arma 2 mod run on the arma 3 engine, the only reason it doesn't is silly licensing issues. pwnoz0r ported it a while ago, then BIS shut him down, its the only reason I own arma 3

I personally want the map upsized to get those endless forests back.

Yeah I was excited for new cities till O realized that the forest was disappearing. Ever since then I've had a whole new look on the deforestation of the rainforest :p

If they won't expand, I wish they'd at least make the forest covered in overgrowth and have like caves and massive hollowed trees/hollowed fallen logs to hide in. Something like that new A3 terrain

Yeah, I really don't see why they never opened DayZ licensing up to A3. Even that rather shoddy port worked better the months it was live than SA ever had. SA is just now finally catching up to that mods performance and perks.

Thats rich. If anything the map is too small and needs to be Altis sized. Finding unknown people should be a gift, a rare occurrence that makes people second guess shooting first and consider other options. Not a time to get your call of duty PvP action on.
