Are you checking berry bushes?

Yes, I check every place I know there is edibles at.

Unfortunately, not starving when I pick apples is not a choice, as I cannot find any other food and by the time I reach any apple tree, I am at the point of either being Starving or Hungry. Which is why I posted my original question; Of how to acquire food, as there is none around.

I truly have no idea how I am supposed to test a Experimental version, report bugs and so forth, when all I can do is run around and die within an hour of spawning.

Try just finding the berry bush or apple tree first. Make sure you're not hungry, then look for other things. At least do this until you start to get an idea for where the foragables are and can quickly find them when you need them.

Once again, I cannot get to any of these trees and/or bushes, until I am at the point of being at least hungry. I have played DayZ since it was released, and I have never had any trouble finding food, be it in Experimental or Stable, only in this version. So, I am curious, how I can find food, when picking trees/bushes for berries and apples is not enough, and I cannot find any other source of food?

Am I not supposed to test the game for bugs and so forth, rather than getting the full DayZ experience in Alpha?

I don't quite see how you could possibly be completely unable to prevent yourself from starving picking apple trees. It takes 15 apples to go from 0 energy (where you're literally dying of hunger) to neutral. If you get to an apple tree quickly after spawn, you can get to first stage energized with roughly the same number of apples, which generally should be acquirable within five minutes of picking. I like to pick three more and get an improvised knife from the coast (actually the first thing I do). At that point, I have enough to run inland. Once I've been first stage hungry for a couple minutes and have eaten my spare apples, I look for a new tree. They're pretty common, but if, for whatever reason, I can't find them, I go and find a berry bush and spam it until I no longer have the hunger status and have a full inventory of berries/apples, again. I might do this once or twice after leaving the coast, depending on how many extra apples I ate at the start, before I reach a town which starts to have loot in it.

Feed shacks, barns (of both varieties) and many, many different houses tend to have loot. Up in the northwest, some of them can have several cans each, if you get lucky.

Really, it's piss easy to survive up in the north west - it's just a bit of a grind with the berry/apple picking to get there. Once there, surviving is incredibly easy. I've not seen the hunger status since I hit around Grishino after the latest wipe. Before that, it was the exact same thing. I've yet to die from hunger, and I've not even seen a single animal on this experimental branch, nor have I tried fishing, or seen another player more than in passing.

Is amazing how different the experience is for someone who gets on the freshly updated servers and those who arrive the the days after. I was on early. The only thing I'm missing is a scope. I've even thrown food away (a sin!) and haven't picked an apple or berry. But if I died and respawned today, I'd probably struggle to get out of the spawn points and to somewhere with loot left.

I started my character two days ago right after the last wipe , me and a friend are now fully geared with one can of food each and all the supplies we need to fish (except for a rope) next time we log in ... This was accomplished by eating berries am getting hydrated (about 6 berries ) and that also got rid of our hunger , we NEVER sprinted unless chased by another player (didn't happen yet but that's our rule). We started in elektro-Cherno , got to staroye , and now we are happily alive and well with saline bags , melees that back up as farming equipment , backpacks , a tent , and even an Ak (no mag though) .

All this was done because we did not ignore foragables like Ebrim is talking about , and we certainly realize that sprinting is a death sentence (at first it doesn't seem to matter but it does). Keep on surviving mates it's possible to survive no matter how late in the EXP cycle, it just gets a bit trickier further along , like it would in a natural apocalypse .

Yeah, apples work... As soon as possible, start farming. Pumpkins are THE BEST farm-able food.

It is enough unless you are doing something to make it not enough, I know, I do it. You say you are having no trouble being cold so you're not passively losing more calories that way. Believe me, if you were spawning into a raining server and were suffering cold effects, I'd understand you having troubles not starving. Cold puts a limit on the amount of time you can spend harvesting out in the open under a torrential downpour. There's no rain in 0.56 though so it's quite easy to stay warm with hand-crafted fires. Unfortunately, I suspect you're not having any trouble staying warm because you're sprinting all the time and unless you're sprinting from harvesting spot to harvesting spot, you're probably losing more calories than you gain that way unless you spend a long time harvesting. I'm pretty confident that if you just sprinted from one harvestable to another harvestable all the way up to Stary Yar, you'd probably be fine (I think someone here said he does just that). I wouldn't do it, I'd be worried about starving but it's probably possible. Personally, I prefer to take it slow and stay alive.

Just because you don't find anything on the first look doesn't mean nothing is there, keep searching for apples and berries on the same tree or bush, it'll pay off eventually.  If you are doing shift+w as soon as you log in quit doing that.

Hardly any of the spawn points are so far from apple trees or berry bushes that you would starve to death before you get there..

I have no trouble staying warm, due to all the warm clothing I find, instead of food. Infact, I have found several Wool Coats, spawning ontop of stoves, as well as warm jackets, raincoats etc, spawning ontop of ovens and other places where food used to spawn. I do not sprint, unless I absolutely have to.

Quite interesting I seem to be the only one suffering from Starvation/Hunger, when I reach such an place, if what you say is true. However, I have spent close to half an hour, at the same tree, trying to find apples, and still only found a handfull. Still does not help reset my hunger, as calories are used each time I search, thus, bringing me closer to starvation and death.

I ran from Pusta to Grishino without having to stop at all, after stocking up on apples (somewhere between first and second stage energized & three more, with a improv knife taking my last slot). When I got to Grishino, I was orange hunger, but that wasn't a worry as I just started collecting apples again and got myself back to neutral... Then found three tins of food within a 30m radius of where I'd been picking apples.

This was before the most recent wipe, toward the end of that loot cycle. Loot has been improved since then, too.

Thing is straight after the wipe you didn't need to do any of that. I ran everywhere, didn't eat apples nor fish or farm. But that's because I got on early. Before the last wipe and after I died a few days after the wipe I did eat berries and apples but I still ran inland asap then once I got to all green through pumps/found food and got a gun + ammo I was over the hump and it was easy surviving.

I think the devs are mainly seeing how long it takes for most of the loot to be taken atm. Seems like 3 or 4 days before you need to really work hardcore survival skills. Even then if you can just get out of the spawn areas and visit less popular locations there will still be loot about.

Well, then my only conclusion is that the devs have by mistake created the first real A.I. capable of feeling emotion and it has expressed that emotion by deciding to hate you and punishing you at every turn while leaving the rest of us unmolested. :(  I'd suggest uninstalling before the A.I. takes control of the heat in your home or learns to use the phone to call a hit squad. Good luck friend and stay safe.

At some point, you're going to have to admit that you're doing something wrong here. Many people in this thread have jumped in to offer troubleshooting and advice (and almost all of it has been in a very polite and friendly manner I might add) and yet here you are still complaining. You're actively resisting great advice from knowledgeable and experienced players. We can't help you if you fight our help.

Reported.

Now, as for the rest of us who can maintain a civil tone; Would not looking for apples/berries, use up more calories, than an apple/berries would give me? Thusly, it would not matter if I were to do such? Least, from what I recall.

Well, as I have mentioned, I am unable to farm anything, I do not have any alternative sources of food, i.e. animals, players etc. By the time I get to trees/bushes, I am at the point of starving/hungry. I do not run, I dress warmly, I do not raid houses explicity looking for food etc.

Infact, currently I have been standing at the same tree, on the same server, for the past 10 minutes, trying to find enough apples to get me not to feel hungry, without success.

Snip

Last suggestion. Play on EZ mode. Kill yourself in the sea until you get a Berezino/Svetlo spawn. Load up on berries/apples until first stage energised and run toward the northwest. Should be able to find loot after around the midpoint of the landmass, in the north.

Looting apples/berries does not use more energy than you gain. I've gone from hungry to energised multiple times using a single tree/bush over the last week... Within five minutes.

What direction are you going? Given a release has been out days, if I spawn in berezino I run straight to kelm and krasnatov then Vyshnaya Dubrovka. Usually by then if I'm not all green then at least I'm not starving. I don't check berezinho at all or try pick apples/berries there.

If I spawn at cherno/electro I'll be heading north without checking either. Lots of small towns/villages/solitary houses around.

Precisely what I do, at least, usually. No edibles, besides berries/apples, which lead me to being Starving/Hungry yellow-orange by the time I reach it.

I either run the top of the map, i.e. Berezino - Svetlo - Novo - Svergino on occasion - Severograd - Ratnoe etc, alternatively, the bottom part of the map, i.e. Electro - Prigordki - Cherno - Balota, Zeleno etc.

I seem to be finding cans of food more than I can carry...   <_<

People need to start looking more thoroughly I think.

Spawned in Berezino, didn't waste time there. Sprinted to the car scrapyard, didn't find anything. Left Berezino and made my way North-West, still sprinting, thirsty and hungry. Went to Dubrovka, looted the little village North-West of it and made my to Gvozdno, heading to Severograd. By that time, I was orange hungry and started starving, relying on the few berries I picked here and there, and was hydrated from a water pump. My plan was to head to Nagornoe to explore it as I never did before.

In the surroundings of Severograd, found 3 cans of food. Bacon, spaghetti and beans. Nagornoe was a safe heaven. 2 bags of rice, 3 cans of peaches, 2 powdered milk and plenty of ammo for my Winchester. I checked everything, and found plenty. This was on Northeast 1PP.

On a side note, I tested "hoping" the same deer stand on 6 different server. Same item pattern. Various stages of damage.

501dtj.jpg

The ammo was absent on 2 of the 6 servers, but the compensator and scopes were there.

I'm not really worried, as these are mainly observations, and the current loot system will change again.

Yep I notice people aren't looting certain building that much at all just because they didn't spawn loot in the past.

None like no sources? Bushes or trees? Or none as in the RNG isn't playing nice with you?

Ah right, you're afraid that harvesting uses more calories than it gains you as you mentioned earlier. The only way I can think this might be possible is if you are hypothermic (and you ruled out my aggressive A.I. theory as uncivilized). There is passive calorie burn but it's tiny compared to the calorie burn of even walking. If you are cold, it's worse but even then you're likely gaining more calories than you're losing. One time I died under an apple tree but I was also hypothermic and losing blood from that as well as being hungry, back in the good days when we had rain.

I've always found that feedshacks especially are often left untouched.

They generally don't spawn much good stuff and most are just too far out of the way for most people to bother. But I have to say, all of my small tools (hatchet, ice pick and field shovel), my hunting backpack, a bunch of rope, wire and food all came from those things. They're only worthwhile if you're a lone wolf who avoids the towns as much as possible though. But they are damned nice.

None as in, no food besides bushes/trees, at which point I am either so far into starvation, I pass out/die, alternatively, another player finds me and kills me.

Yep, sorry, I edited that as I misread your original intent. Harvesting berries/apples while not cold will never lead to you starving unless you get profoundly unlucky.

No worries. Though, I did spend close to 10 - 20 minutes, picking the same tree for apples, and passed out a few seconds later, after having found a few apples. Eventually, this lead to my death. I was, infact, at Healthy status, with Hunger being the only thing that was bad.
