Please focus on bugs for a while

Recommended Posts

Again with the misconceptions. I did not use all caps because I was yelling furiously, but to make the words stand out, so you would read them. Everything I wrote in caps is exactly why we are having this discussion about misconceived opinions. You ask for something that is simply not a priority, then you keep insisting that it should be a priority, when it most definitely should not be. Your entire argument is based on misconception. In short, you're wrong.

If you've made 1,4 K posts, you know by know that all caps gives the impression you're shouting, and will make you seem unreasonable. If you wanted to emphasise you argument you could have used bold, or underlined, or a different colour or whatever.

You're trying to put words in my mouth, I am not stating that it should be a priority. I have also noticed you completely dodging helf of my arguments, and instead just saying I'm wrong..

And what use is reporting the bugs if they simply won't fix them? I'm not saying the devs must cater to our needs, but if they listen to people asking for bug fixes and deliver it's going to please the customers and a happy player base will only be beneficial to the company.

I don't see why it would hurt do just push upcoming features back a bit, and just have the next update or two making a dent in the growing pile of infuriating bugs it this game

I feel your frustration Pandachow, but I am most certain that there have been no mention from any team member that we simply refuse to fix bugs. I'll do a quick run through of your experiences:

1: Fully geared, in ATC and just died, no gunshot, friend heard no gunshot, nobody up there, all gear was still pristine.

Filed here (assuming you were upstairs. If not, please clarify and/or feel free to file it): http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=5169. "Acknowledged" status which means it is scheduled for a fix.

2: VERY geared, Ammo boxes, smersh backpack + vest, the lot. The same thing again and I just died in the camo building in the very northern abandoned military base. No gunshot, just blackscreen.

Same as above.

3: Somebody lightly knocked my truck with their truck, both died.

Doesn't seem to have been filed on FT. However, vehicles are still heavily tested internally, and the guys have been notified of your experience. Always feel free to search the Feedback Tracker and file bugs if they have not already been filed: http://feedback.dayzgame.com

4: This was a firefight, fair enough.

5: Fully geared, killed by a hacker in Cherno, explosions everywhere, before landmines. Wasn't near a gas station. Admin confirmed over global channel that it was a hacker.

Development of the security measures have not at all come to a halt. Previous status reports touch on this subject matter plenty of times. Also, not a bug.

6: someone shot me, fair enough

7: Well geared, one shot by a zombie, was wearing a helmet and was healthy, zombie comes up to me and hits me in the head and I die immediately, then did the same to my friend.

Don't expect for anything to be finalized yet. This stage of development is not really for polishing, so review and balancing of damage output is still to come. Not a bug.

All things considered, I have to stress what Brian mentioned in the latest status report:

"... The Early Access program provides you with development builds of the project, not access to a feature, or functionally complete game. As this year progresses, more and more parts of the Enfusion engine and its accompanying technology will be merged into the main branch. This means things will break, sometimes things will break -hard-. We utilize the experimental branch to flesh out any catastrophically game breaking issues (think client crashes, server freezes, high repro progression loss, and so on) and at the end of the month the most stable development build gets pushed to Steam for all of you to poke, experiment, and have fun with."

If you'd like this topic to remain unlocked, I'd suggest keeping focused on the topic and not arguing. Just a helpful hint to all, as I've seen the destruction wrought upon those unaware of orlok's insatiable appetite. :)

So, regarding the idea that people will stop playing DayZ due to bugs because it isn't enjoyable: http://steamcharts.com/app/221100 I take this as evidence the bugs aren't that intolerable.

Look, I know people don't like bugs. I get it. They're annoying and frustrating and sometimes ridiculous. A quick hop on the tracker shows there's about 10,000 reported bugs of some kind (not saying they're all valid/legit/etc, just they're in the tracker). As the developer, which one should you tackle first? How do you decide what's the most important to fix right now? The suggestion was made to take a couple releases and just focus on bugs. Fine. Let's pretend that happens. They solve 100 bugs with the next update. So now you've made 100 people happy. And 9,900 still scream that you're doing nothing and don't care about the customers because you didn't fix their particular bug.

Game development isn't a simple process of going from A to B. I fully understand the opinion that bugs should be fixed. However, I completely disagree it's the best option for the devs to choose. Given a choice, at this stage of the game, I would have every dev work on foundational systems and save the "I just died for no reason" bugs for later.

Hi Smoss,

Firstly, I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to address this thread, I'm also honestly amazed! Other forums I've been on hardly ever seem to attract the attention of the developers, so thanks again.

I'm also glad to see that, contrary to my previous impression, bug fixing is continuous throughout the development process, I guess it's just bad luck that the bugs I have been experiencing haven't quite been cracked yet, making it appear as if bug fixing wasn't happening, my bad, misconception gone :)

And yes, I died upstairs in the ATC and camo building.

Thanks again, and keep up the great work! Dayz is one of my favourite games I've ever played, guess I'll just have to wait a bit till it's perfect, at which point it might well be the best game out there :D

Thanks for the kind words :) And don't worry, the guys are working their fingers to the bone with both development as well as bug fixing.

From a business standpoint, their priority is to deliver a captivating, immersive game experience, which means adding a lot of stuff that is built from scratch, and as a result, may be bugged. Not jumping whenever someone snaps their fingers and says "Fix this little thing that annoys me, now." This isn't a finished game, fixing anything except actual game-breaking bugs is simply not a priority, nor should it be.

Also, these testers that go around telling people the game is doomed are just talking out of their ass, and are likely part of the greater group of fucktards who think DayZ is a murder simulator with some zombies added into it. Their opinions are entirely irrelevant.

yeah thank cthullu that the devs don't listen to the community about fixing stuff coughs H1 coughs. hence why this game when finished will be the most badass game ever made well in my opinion it will.

Things like a new loot economy is cool, but IMHO most people really just want the game to be enjoyable, and not have their experience constantly disrupted by bugs.

Then I would strongly recommend you (or these aforementioned people) not be playing the Early Access, and instead wait for the release of DayZ.

Let me make this clear, seeking mastered builds is outside the scope of what this offering is. I call this out clearly in the latest Status Report and I've gone over it so many times on the forums, Steam forums, my twitter and so on that sometimes I forget which topic I'm posting in.

Testing is done in three tiers, each tier scaling up in load and volume. Internal, Experimental, Main (Stable) - and make no mistake. All three branches are for testing.

I keep reading phrases containing "attached to gear". Nobody is attached to gear. It's just a "waste" of the time you have spent getting the gear when you lose it.

Deaths 1,2,3 and 5 are all repeatable (deaths 1 and 2 must be repeatable because it happened twice) 7 is also repeatable (http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/224149-zombie-keep-one-shooting-my-ass/)

Dying more from bugs than players/diseases/whatever is what I would call pretty close to game breaking for many people. Saying "someone dies" implies that I've just died once and come here to vent, these are issues being experienced by many, many people.

If I were a developer, I would read the countless steam reviews asking for bug fixes, from a business standpoint, a company should aim to keep their consumers happy, otherwise they're going to lose sales. Yeah, sure, it's in early access, but many testers have lost faith that these bugs are going to be fixed, and are telling people to steer clear of the game.

Who have said this? What a load of crap.

Okay, I was friendly at first, now a little less so.

BUG FIXING IS NOT PART OF THE ALPHA STAGE. BUG FIXING IS RESERVED FOR THE BETA STAGE.

Or more concise:

ALPHA IS FOR ADDING, BETA IS FOR FIXING.

These people you quote, barring a few exceptions, have no idea what they're talking about. For starters, since I started playing in 0.44, there has been a massive amount of problems found and fixed. And if you pay after accepting that the game at this stage is full of problems, then no, you really don't have any right to get uppity at the devs because the game is full of problems. That's like paying to get into an R&B night club, bitching about the R&B music, and then giving the place a shit review on Yelp because the deejay didn't listen to you when you clamored for some trance music.

Do you ever get the feeling your being ignored?

and, shutting down server hosting as well until at least beta, whist all the bugs are fixed so server hosters don't say things like "Hey EH its buggy you know" lol

but I get you hicks, improve on the good old days of alpha, beta testing when you actually placed your name, and address to the name you tested from.

But then again no funding, blah!
