sea 18 Posted April 3, 2015 OK guys, I see tons of posts about there being no loot, canned food is hard to find, etc. I was also frustrated at first, until I got to playing and seeing what it took to survive. First off, APPLES! Find an apple tree and work your butt off gathering apples! I spent 1.5 hours picking apples at one point, but was fully energized/hydrated and my pockets were full, so I was able to run around finding loot. OUTHOUSES! You would not BELIEVE what spawns in those little places. Barred window structures near guardhouses; the ones with a covered small porch that you cannot enter. Amazing loot! Just get energized/hydrated and head inland, guys. If you get hungry, find berries or apples until you have the materials to make a garden or the supplies to kill an animal(or player?), skin and quarter, cook, and eat. It's not all that bad, guys. If you have Zeds running after you, just keep running; they get tired. Or just melee them with fists; hit them in the face! Seems to work better than even swinging a fire axe at this point. This game was *never* meant to be pvp-oriented. It is SURVIVAL oriented, and survival is TOUGH. Suck it up and explore; find what you need to survive. Throw all your loot information out the window; times have changed! Devs: Please, PLEASE fix these friggen tents! :P

If you like PvP, hit up ArmA or something ... DayZ has *ALWAYS* been intended to be hardcore SURVIVAL. Now, we actually have to work at survival before anything else! That's what I expected when I first bought SA, and was relatively disappointed to see rampant PvP going on but survival being stupid simple. The game is now becoming what it promised; hardcore SURVIVAL.

And yes, we still have some PvP; just not as much; this is, once again, a SURVIVAL-based game! Read the actual information on the game before you buy it! Also, being in alpha stages of development, it IS a work in progress. It was far too easy to survive. Now, survival is #1 and PvP is somewhere in the background; no one wants to get in gunfights because they are still figuring out how to stay alive :)
sea 18 Posted April 3, 2015 ...as for PvP, set up camp somewhere; maybe you will find someone coming to raid your stash! Much more realistic, in my honest opinion. In an apocalyptic situation, who would actively go out looking for people to kill? Pretty sick folks; that's who! You are now forced to use your brain, not just wait for a server restart to loot a military, gear up, and PvP. Now, you actually have to scavenge and fight to survive! If you want to PvP, best of luck! Personally, I have more fun surviving, hunting, growing veggies, etc to survive instead of spending 8 hours looting just to die in 5 minutes of gunfight :) If I want to PvP, there are games I play for that, where I respawn fully armed. For basic survival, DayZ is finally challenging!
Whyherro123 2283 Posted April 4, 2015 1,5 hours on an apple tree? rly? how can this be fun?you dont rly know what the game was ment to be... pvp is the most interessting part for the greater part of the community.check the streams and youtube, how many vids of people do you see there standing 1 hour in front of an apple tree.I'll just leave this here.... https://mobile.twitt...714726850486273(Tweet from one of the Devs about .55) Day Z was never meant to be solely, or even mostly, focused on PvP. It is a "survival" game, and while that encompasses PvP, PvP on the other hand is not just "get a gun or melee weapon and kill each other in a circlejerk of violence that Khorne himself would blush at". PvP also means "competition for resources", which is EXACTLY what is happening in .55. Somebody else finds some food and some ammo before you? PLAYER VS PLAYER. On a related tangent, I loathe Twitchers and Streamers, with very few exceptions, as they are almost solely to blame for the "ALL PVP ALL THE TIME" atmosphere and community groupthink that predominated in DayZ before this patch. Streamers often go for "quick and easy views", the things that will get the most people watching, subscribing, and giving their sponsors ad revenue. As a result, 99% of the streamers and Twitchers do nothing but kill people in this game. This made people who might not have bought Day Z in the first place, think Day Z was a primarily-PvP-based game, and they are the ones crying on the forums right now about how much this latest patch "sucks" There are definitely many problems with the .55 patch, don't get me wrong (and if you don't think so, you are almost as crazy as the ".55 Deniers". Almost. However, decrying a SURVIVAL game for including some more PvE content and focused mechanics over more PvP circlejerkery basically means that Day Z might not be the right game for you. Evil Minion 943 Posted April 4, 2015 (edited) They waited way too long for this. Now the game is filled with people who actually do not want a zombie survival game but rather an oldschool deathmatch game with weapon pickups on a huge map. May the mistake never be repeated and PvE/survival never become trivial again.1,5 hours on an apple tree? rly? how can this be fun?You do not need to grind your way to fully energized and hydrated by piking apples. It's an option that gives you a quite significant award (full regeneration and not having to worry about supplies for some time) for a quite significant effort. You could also use them on your way to avoid starving and move on to inland places where you may or may not find more loot (which can open up more food sources that are less monotone to play). Now I think gathering could use some work to bring it closer to something like level grinding in RPGs or farming in MOBAs in terms of enjoyment. Eat until stuffed loot around the orchard to warm up, eat some more, repeat. These guys who want the easy loot up and DM were born without or raised not to have an appreciable attention span. They also can't understand working towards a reward making the reward worth getting. Flame on lazy casuals ;) Edited April 12, 2015 by BCBasher
Jonah_Hobbes 171 Posted April 12, 2015 Sorry but I just spent 45 minutes finding berries, etc and it was dull as f*ck. People didn't watch the Walking Dead to see Rick plant tomatoes. I'm all for that side of the game and for those that want to play it but it should not be at the expense of all. In Nycta, (unlooted), I found a couple of pairs of damaged boots and nothing else. All the loot has moved to the North side of the map. I'm sure I'll survive it's just going to take me a lot longer to get there.
St. Jimmy 1631 Posted April 12, 2015 (edited) I just tested that you can jog ~6,2km from hunger status that just turned yellow to the red starving. If you've light green energized you likely can jog through the map without eating. So a red berry and apple tree spam on the coast when you spawn -> well hydrated and fed -> take couple of those with you just in case -> run where ever you want and settle there. That likely takes 2h to do all of those things if you find the berry bushes and apple trees quickly. You'll also very likely find some clothes on the way.
