Is direct communication (typing) working?

Just met a guy that tried to talk to me, I have no mic so I typed back in direct channel, but he clearly could not read it. Is it known to not work? A mic is really not an option for me, but it would be nice to be able to type some messages.

It just wont work with my family situation. DayZ mic talk would not go down well here  :lol: back in my bachelor days things were different... those were the dayz...

Were you in the correct direct communication method?  You can press a button (I think it's the full stop "." key) to switch between direct communication and vehicle only - something like that anyway.  Could it be that?

It's in the white colored channel "Direct communication". I think that's supposed to work in your immediate surroundings, like talking without a mic. I've tried it a few times with players around but noone seems to notice. In arma 1-3 this was/is working as it should.

People don't always notice the chat, even better a lot of them don't even know you can type in chat, thus they won't even search for anything written by you.

It works but it seasy to screw up your graphic settings so the text doesn't show as its at the very bottom. Its easy to simply miss it also.

Actually I'm encountering this issue as well. 

 

First of all I'll point out my laptop doesn't have a working mic- it's there but for reasons I won't elaborate on it doesn't work. I can't assign it in the hardware / sound section... I've bought a headset and it's waiting for me at home so I'm hoping this will resolve the issue. OP, I know you are saying you can't do this so I'll expand on my issues given my current circumstances with a non-functioning or disabled mic.

 

A couple things that I have noticed when playing on my laptop: 

 

1) I cannot read people who are direct chatting to me through typing. 

2) I cannot hear people who are direct communicating with me through voice

3) I can confirm that they see what I am typing (confirmed with friends online)

4) I can confirm that I can see my own typing when I direct chat to them so I know the window is within view.

 

A solution that was recommended to me was to activate your mic anyway but turn the input volume way down in your computer's configuration. I can't confirm that works but that was a solution provided before I realized I couldn't even activate my onboard mic in its current condition.

I agree, as, no offense, but how can a computer that doesn't come with  a mic on the monitor even hope to run DayZ, and if it can, that definitely costs a sh*t ton more than a mic.

I had one time before I got my mic working where I was asked to identify myself so I typed it. The guy shot me then read my typed message and apologised profusely. \ definitely works but whether they read it in the heat of the moment is another thing.

Might want to get a macro or something, after I initiate contact if you don't reply pretty damned quickly I assume you are directing your friend to put one in the back of my head on a TS chat.

Fix this yet bunkers? Your suggestion was right. I had a similar thing happen on my secondary pc, I would be playing with a buddy right next to me and I could talk and type to others through Direct Communication but when he did nothing was seen/heard, nor could he see text or hear voice chat. I'll point you to a post that addresses the issue.

My solution was not exactly how it was posted, but extremely similar, I think I activated stereo device as that pc isn't using a mic currently anyways. Good luck if you haven't fixed it already.

This is a very young, single, or pre or post kids question. Any gamer with a family especially at night will not be able to use a mic.
