Something else to consider, attach a lantern onto stick like this, hang off your backpack

Rags/bandana + stick = bindle. I like it.

It should serve as storage that the player has to actually hold, rather than carry on their back. Equipping a weapon will drop the bindle. It'd have no use beyond very early storage for freshspawns that have yet to find a bag, but need some extra storage space.

I like it, but what sould be the difference to an improvised courier bag? No rope needed?

Yes I think that's the point. Sometimes it's really hard to find a rope, so it would be another options to carry some stuff with you.

6-10 Slots, that's enough and easy to craft. Stick + bandana/burlap sack. I like it too :)

Oh sir, you have my beans and the beans of my unborn children!

Sadly I think it would require quite a lot of character animation to get right so perhaps is a little unlikely. Any item that makes a player think about survival - in this case, keeping their stuff or defending themselves - is a wonderful suggestion :)
