eno 1049 Posted January 31, 2015 Eh guys. Quick question for you. Being relatively new I've been exposed to a few servers but have played them based on my ping. Now I'm starting to look for ways to find servers that are located more centrally to expand my opportunities to team up with others in north america. Server names seem to say lots about LOOT LOOT LOOT- DON'T COME IN OR WE WILL EAT YOU- NO PVP- MAX PVP... ugh. What's the best way to identify a server location? Does anyone have any servers they could recommend they found while seeking something similar? Or is it just going back to basics and going through each name and checking out gametracker to see a location? Thanks for any input.
krazypenguin 174 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) Hi Eno, posting from rubbish mobile phone so struggling with copy and paste but if you google "where are dayz servers located" one of the top results is gametracker.comThat site lists the server name, players and server physical location so you could try looking there. The server list in game is very poor. Persistence should be a column, as should restart times and frequency and physical location. These things should not be left to admins to include in their description. eno 1049 Posted January 31, 2015 I agree... hoping that's something being worked on in the background since right now it's pretty chaotic. I've been hunting around gametracker, trying to get more proficient at finding information so I can gather it quickly. There is some great info on there. Thanks Krazy! kichilron 8550 Posted January 31, 2015 I do have a question, though: Why exactly do you need to know the location of a server? You can filter for ping and that's effectively the only thing that matters, not how far away from the server you are.
schwaBAM 200 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) Basically for finding a server in the middle between two people. I live on the east coast (NY) and he lives in Canada on the other side of the continent. So we were just looking for a server more towards Central US/Canada if possible. Although that trek seems to be much harder than I thought. While I have found some central servers, they all seem to be public servers. Edited January 31, 2015 by schwaBAM
tommy290 941 Posted January 31, 2015 Here's the private shard I play on: http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/198.12.77.2:2502/ I'm in Michigan and we've got lots of guys that play from Canada and west coast of US. No one has had any issues. I can't tell you where the server is physically located, but I can recommend it based on what you're trying to accomplish. As for figuring out the location of any particular server, I have no clue. :)

We looked into one yesterday that was private to schwabam and I looked it up later and it came up as public. Is that bugged somehow? Just wondering since this would be twice in two days in two searches.
pilgrim* 3514 Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) BUT if you want to play with a friend and want "equal" ping - wouldn't it be faster to screenshot your DayZ server list, arranged by ping, at the same time as he screenshot his, and just email them to each other and compare ?? (as Kichilron points out - only the ping counts) If you really want to geographically locate servers, do it like this:If you highlight a sever and click on Details, on the DayZ SA server list - there you have the IP, - then any IP tracker will show you the region that IP is located(some IP finders are better than others, look around the web and try them out).I sometimes use < ip-tracker.org > for instance, to find out where my spam mail is coming from. This tracker service gets it right quite often - some don't - and you get a map too. This can be fun if you're a nerd like me. Kind of hobby - I used to get a lot of "really interesting ... not" spam from some dudes - turned out they were located at Lake Baikal, heh (I live in France for frags sake) - when I get totally bored with it, then I just block that IP. It's pretty certainly an Interenet Supplier server IP, so now anyone living within 100km of Lake Baikal who uses that service can't get in touch with me.. but I can live with it.It can be interesting to find out where the crap is coming from... it beats trainspotting. And there are other honest uses. Private home IP's are usually virtual (about 100% now, I guess), so the closest you will get to a temporarily allocated home IP is their Internet Supplier's nearest server.. or only to one of their IS's central servers, but companies and orgs with serious-stuff servers need fixed IPs, so you can maybe zoom right in on the building itself, if that's what get's you hot. So if you really want to physically locate a DayZ Supplier server installation, you can find it, (or find it to within 10 miles) as I suggest. xx pilgrim Edited February 3, 2015 by pilgrim

Just wondering since this would be twice in two days in two searches. Thats odd, the server listed by Tommy is a private shard (central) unsure why it would load public in the filters, are you sure its not just saying Public in the server name vs the filter on the right? eno 1049 Posted February 2, 2015 It was saying public in the column but said private in the name. It is very strange. Both Schwabam and I saw the same thing.

Weird, I'll take a look into it, it should be listed as private it will be going whitelisted on the 14th. I play on it and have never seen it show as public but I may be blind or drunk half the time.
