Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) Back in the early days,i remember our steam names, being bind with our ingame names.Fortunately or unfortunately, devs replaced this system to let players pick their own name. Now personally,i have to admit that i prefer the older system where your steam account name was also your ingame name.Imo,it gave players a sense of identity. But on the other hand, having the ability to customize your name gave players more freedom. If you were to choose... Would you prefer going back to where your steam name was your ingame name? Or you prefer having the freedom to pick and change your own ingame name? Edit: Added a poll. SmashT 10907 Posted January 24, 2015 Doesn't bother me as I use the same name, probably helps a great deal with stream sniping and just general harassment though with the current system.
OrLoK 16185 Posted January 24, 2015 Hello there I see the point of the idea, but I dont think its really "workable" as such. As Smasht says there are many reasons as to why you'd want to be anon. Personally, I use this name everywhere. Rgds LoK
Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted January 24, 2015 Me too,i use the same name everywhere in form of different variations (Damnyourdeadman:Steam/Forums/Ingame - Damndeadyourman:Reddit - Damnmanyourdead:Bugtracker) :D Although my reasoning was that if the ingame name is bind to the Steam name we can have the possibility of an interesting Social System implementation.A non customizable name will be something substantial,a way of identity.Additionally,it will somewhat help, battle the hacking threat. If the ingame name was the same as Steam,we could have additional leads to find the hacker's identity.
HeXedMinD (DayZ) 39 Posted January 24, 2015 I like the current system, but if it changes i am find with that too.
Evil Minion 943 Posted January 24, 2015 I do not like to be limited to my steam name and would rather like customizable names. Also I think you should name your characters instead: If you first spawn with a character the name you set will stick until she dies. This allows for multiple customizable names per player while still making is possible to use the name for identification. I think this would allow for better recognition (along with your face and maybe body shape) and also gives players the chance to alterate between playstyles as character death can be used as absolution without having the sins of your old character still sticking to you. Maybe add a option for private shards to limit players to a single ingame name as well.
Grimey Rick 3417 Posted January 24, 2015 I'd rather DayZ use our Steam name, and I'd take it a step further: just like typing "status" in your Source console, have it display people's Steam IDs. What's it really going to harm? At the very least, it could make it slightly easier to identify cheaters/griefers. I don't really understand why you have to be anonymous in this game. Who cares about stream sniping? As far as harassment goes, if you block someone on Steam, how are they going to find what server you're on? Server hop? That seems unlikely.

But I do understand the point of Stream-Sniping, as there is ways of being able to track people's servers down when you know their Steam-Name / ID - which isn't really all that hard finding out for Streamers. Grimey Rick 3417 Posted January 24, 2015 Yeah, because you're changing your Steam-Name every 2.5 seconds. I memorized your Steam ID... the moment... I met you...
tobias winfro 305 Posted January 24, 2015 Either way works for me, I only use a few different names in Dayz or any other games I play. When I use my steam name I tend to get a ton of laughs and tend to get shot less. Something about the name PeepinandCreepin makes people giggle and tend to lower their guard a bit
