Sanity checks you say? 0.53

Recommended Posts

So the tweets said something about "Sanity checks", i'm not on experimental atm so, what is going on?

I just checked some of the old threads and the majority of people are against about it so, i'm really curious why they decided to include a feature like this, when most of the player base seems to be against it.

Also how is it implemented and what are the repercussions onto the character.

Can someone throw some light here?

A sanity test or sanity check is a basic test to quickly evaluate whether a claim or the result of a calculation can possibly be true. It is a simple check to see if the produced material is rational (that the material's creator was thinking rationally, applying sanity). The point of a sanity test is to rule out certain classes of obviously false results, not to catch every possible error. A rule-of-thumb may be checked to perform the test. The advantage of a sanity test, over performing a complete or rigorous test, is speed.

I'm assuming it's security related.

Sanity checks are basically quick tests designed to find out whether or not the absolute basics of a game (feature) are working as intended/aren't broken.

Once again this is a case of misunderstood development lingo. One downside of involving your playerbase in the development process.

Just be thankful they aren't being done on the playerbase.

smasht and accolyte have to sanity check almost everything we write lest the rumor mill and waves of misinformation wash over us like the zombie hoard!

Just blame everything on kichi and it will all smooth over ;).

I've had a look at the unofficial change log for .53 and I think I'll stay on stable for now to be honest. I can't imagine the animal AI is such a big change that it warrants the switch - especially if the update is going to be a "bit touchy".

This is a sanity-check:

if (SteakNPootatas != "stupid") then { // Don't bother - not going to happen };

It does seem to be a rather minor update in terms of user-facing changes. Those that are present seem pretty minor. I am very happy about the upgrade to animal AI, but I agree that it isn't reason enough alone to play 0.53. I'll check for some map changes and then likely head back to 0.52 where it's actually possible to make campfires :p

Yeah I spotted (on Reddit) that the campfires were rooked. My reluctance in switching to Experimental is twofold to be honest, as just now Steam has taken a huff and stopped running the experimental .exe with the classic "Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)" error. The stable works, the experimental doesn't. I've reinstalled both branches twice, and even put the current install into a new steam repository but it still complains. I've raised a support thread on Steam support but they keep closing it and claiming it's Bohemia's fault along with the text, "la-la-la our fingers are in our ears we cannot hear you", and I keep reopening the bug report and explaining what a shite job they are doing. The only solution I had in the past with this particular problem was with Far Cry 2 and the only resolution was to completely delete all Steam content and reinstall it. As I have 100's of Gbs of Steam games now there is not a single fucking chance that is happening now, so it's Stable for me just now.

Jinkies, that escalated quickly from noting campfires were buggered to bitching about Steam's customer support.
