Appearances can be deceiving.

Recommended Posts

As a little test, I'd like everyone to check this screenshot from my hardcore character, and from just that try to guess my character's survival style. For clarity, my character is wearing a Riders jacket, black cargo pants, Redpunk boots, plain black balaclava, black radar cap and aviators, and carrying a black drybag, all pristine.

The reason I'm interested is because I want to know if stereotypes are valid, and how much people are affected by it. And if you think I'm giving myself away by conspicuously asking, think again, the answer may surprise you.

You help if you want to, but mostly travel at night to avoid detection.

During the day, I wear a ERDL boonie, blue jeans, tan tactical shirt (or white check shirt, I carry one in the bag) , beige boots and gloves, SMERSH vest and hunting pack.

At night, I wear black Balaclava, black tactical shirt, black gloves and boots, black cargo pants, military backpack and SMERSH vest-all I lack is NVGs and a silenced pistol :p. I carry the night gear in my bag.

But as of late, you can find me everyday at the docks in Cherno at noon wearing a blue Tshirt, tan shorts, designer shades and barefoot fishing off the docks. Noones had the balls to feck with me yet :D

Stereotypes and player profiling exist, but even more so when you're baiting evidence to make the outcome you want.

You're standing there, in all black, with multiple weapons, flipping the bird.

You're trying to instill the idea of you being a bandit.

If I saw you, I wouldn't shoot you outright, as I never KOS, but I'd give the town a wide berth while you're in it.
If you approached me, I'd act cautious around you and would probably just try end up trying to make friendly contact.
For all I know, we could go bandit hunting or gearing up together.

you sound like a bandit (balaclava), but also like a scavenger (by the colors)

,with multiple weapons, flipping the bird.

You're trying to instill the idea of you being a bandit.

He could just be going for the apocalyptic gun slinger type more so than a bandit really.

Different guns for different situations. A colt for armored gear fellows and pistols with clips for rapid entry and tight corridor fighting. A rifle for picking of infected without getting to close and killing animals with. And a Derringer for much quiter attacks.

Well , the 3 sidearms either suggest a hoarder , or maybe just a generous gun auctioneer, but yu also have three melees , so I'm gonna hope generous gun and weapon auctioneer ... I'd say your'e friendly regardless of clothing , but typically yes people would stereotype you because of clothing and aggressive actions like flipping the bird lol .. But you should have left your intentions of observing stereotypes secret until a bunch of people had posted, just to keep it unbiased so to speak , I like the experiment though :) !

I don't stereotype

I shoot all people regardless of race, clothes, or gender

Well, with your choice of black leather and a hat over a helmet, I do conclude that you are a member of The Village People.

It's made especially clear by the fact that you carry a pink derringer. Any real man carries a black derringer.

Maybe if the photo was your native resolution I'd able to see..

It is native.

Just low settings & his vision is blurred from combat.

On topic: I freestyle every encounter I have. Sometimes I'm jumpy, & a fresh spawn can startle me around a corner resulting in me shooting him. Sometimes I see that same fresh spawn & say hello.

The same scenario can be made in regard to someone who's fully geared. There's a lot of variables that come into play.

unless im on a military base and someone is sneaking around, i dont shoot on sight. but if i ever see people with masks on. i shoot to kill. (no, gas masks dont count)

what you wear doesnt always show your true colors, it has to do with what you found while surviving. therefore i am friendly to everyone i meet until i know for sure they mean me harm by the way they are acting.

....huh? "What you found while surviving"? So you doom someone to death because they found a mask of some kind?

I mean that's cool and all if you do that, as I'm a fan of murdering people regardless, but that doesn't really make any sense to me...

Actually this would have been a MUCH better example.

The_Warriors_large.jpg?1398333328

You can still wear colors and kill ppl to.

Or an even better example.

Wasn't sure if showing Bloods and Crips real photos was acceptable on the forums so this will have to suffice lol.

you dont have to pick up the mask and wear it while wandering. other than that i wait before i shoot due to some people have no choice in what they have to wear to stay warm. but the mask for me is an instant tell. its basically a big sign saying 'im a bandit'

Exactly. Masks offer no benefit, and make you look like a punk. Nobody in my clan wears masks, and I assume if you are wearing one, you either are a bambi, or a bandit.

Tieable face masks can be torn into rags, and are far from useless. When I plan on playing nice and then holding people up down the road, I dress as "friendly" as possible. When I'm playing as a long term survivor, I carry military weapons and look intimidating as fuck.

Come on guys, don't judge a book by its cover!

And obviously this guys a canibal. Why else would he need all of those bladed weapons?

Ohhh, rags! You mean those things that can be made from literally any shirt or sweatshirt? AWESOME /snark

It is pretty simple: cover your face, and others are less likely to trust you. It is a result of human psychology; removing the face from view serves to "dehumanize" you, which is why "bad guys" tend to obscure their faces via masks or helmets in movies. Doesn't matter if it is a bandanna, or one of the stupid needs-to-be-removed PAYDAY masks, if I see you with one, you are going to die if at all possible.

And, in Day Z its current state, you can pretty safely "judge a book by its cover".

What do you suggest I tear into rags when all of the gear on my body is ruined and I'm bleeding out? That face bandana has saved my life twice now. Why you gotta be such a dick, man? You used to make such thoughtful posts that I really enjoyed reading. Now you just fling vitriol feces with the rest of the forum warriors. Such a shame.

So who's the bandit? The guy who KoS for nothing or the guy who wears whatever he wants?

Those payday masks will get you shot almost every time!

Yeah only if you shoot back at me. I crippled a son of a bitch with my Colt that decided to just assume i was a bandit and run out of the woods firing at me.
