Saw of street signs to receive melee weapons

Recommended Posts

Just imagine:

You are alone in the streets and start sewing of a street sign to get the stop sign of doom

I actually quite like that idea, considering you can already create a sawnoff with the hacksaw.

I'm all for the ability to make or find improvised weapons. Steel or lead pipes would be a favorite starter weapon of mine until I get an axe :)

I can just see it now....

"Some guy beat me to death with the leaving Gorka sign. It was a bad day."

I shall ride atop an armored Battle Boar while wielding my battle Ax made from the 'put on snow tires' sign on the road near Tulga.

That's a good idea. If there are exposed pipes and such inside houses maybe there could be an option to rip the pipe off the wall, or saw it off or something.

I'd like fire axes to be way less common. They should be extremely rare outside of fire stations. Hatchets, however, should be more common.

+1 good idea, one that im sure occurred to quite a few people

im all about giving more options to the player , makes for better emergent gameplay

id go further than that and let people rip out fenceposts to use a melee weapons but that's harder to implement

I weighed a felling axe, it came out to 4.3 lbs. Then a splitting maul which is way too heavy to be a practical weapon: 10.5 lbs.

So the weight of 3 feet of 13-gauge 2-3/8" OD galvanized steel pipe with a 30" aluminum stop sign would be about ((((2.375/2)²*pi)-((2.1882/2)²*pi))*36*0.2836)+(((((3*sqrt 3)/2)*(30tan30°)²)*0.0808)*0.09754) = 13 lbs.

FYI the big two-handed Dane axes of yore weighed about 3 lbs, haft and head.

Not practical at all... can't imagine people tearing down street signs for weapons.

For construction and barricading, however, that's a different matter...

So just use the half bar? Mr.Math?

Did you ever held that kind of street signs in your hands? its not THAT heavy...

"So the weight of 3 feet"

"weight of 3 feet"

"3 feet"

Yes, and it's too heavy to make any kind of useful weapon, especially if you intend to place it on your back and sprint across the hills.

You sure you didn't mixed with the numbers? I'm a learned mechanic and i held many bars in my life. Taking a look into my calculation book and doing some quick math using stats for a common pipe used for street signs its about 5,5lbs for 1meter of pipe. How much lbs the sign alone?

Edit: i can send you my calculation by PM if you like.

Nope, by my calculations the 13-gauge round post is ~2.28 lb/ft and the 30" aluminum stop sign would weigh ~6.14 lbs by itself. A 16 gauge post would be ~1.57 lb/ft which would still be 10.8 lbs. The U-channel posts are not too different according to vendor's sites. It's not a good weapon - they would remove the sign from the post at the very least. But I don't see someone sitting down, removing the sign, spending blades and a good deal of time sawing through the post to obtain for what would be a poor, heavy weapon. Seems like something that fits less serious, more arcade games...

sorry i don't know what this "gauge" is and how to measure it. And i wont find it out now because its Xmas

But according to THIS website a street sign (at least where i life) is mounted by this pipes.

The text in the lower left corner basically says:

Steel Pipe Type S 110

60,3 mm Ø, 1000 mm Length

Steel galvanized, Thickness 2 mm

contains lever and pipe cap

So we got 60,3mm diameter, one meter length (about 3 foot?!) and 2mm thickness, right? Right.

Lets put these into this and make sure you select steel and pipe.

I got 6.3326 for the pipe and you?

Now the street sigh:

Seems like USA has slightly bigger signs then Europe, anyway lets stick to your 30"x30" here you can buy it says 6.4 lbs

so its 6.3 + 6.4 = 12.7 ok? ok!

lets compare this with a firefighter axe(which is actually in game as we know(THATS UNREAL STUFF!!!1!!asafafa!!))

According to amazon fire fighter axes come in two common designs one with 6lbs one with 8lbs ONLY THE HEAD lets say it weights 7lbs.

Now we need a handle i prefer Hickory, how bout you? This one should fit its weight is 2.4lbs

So we at 7+2.4 lbs makes 9.4 lbs

12.7 - 9.4 = 3.3 lbs difference

You really want to argue about ~3 lbs if a weapon become "effective" or not? Just eat up your beanz bro :(

Yup, okay, you get 12.7 vs my 13.0.

Now we need a handle i prefer Hickory, how bout you? This one is actually too small for our axe but i couldn't find the weight of a bigger one. Hey, its the apocalypse so lets just take this one.

So we at 7+2.5 lbs makes 9.5 lbs

So close to my maul, which is as I mentioned 10.5 lbs and too heavy to be a practical weapon. However a more common weight for a fire axe is 6 lb. Would have to inspect model to check, maybe they chose the larger weight for appearance.

12.7 - 9.5 = 3.2 lbs difference

You really want to argue about ~3 lbs if a weapon become "effective" or not? Just eat up your beanz bro :(

Speaking about the fire axe, I'm not a big fan of that one either for the same reason, heavy. But the fire axe is an axe, it has a cutting edge and spiked poll, the sign is just a sign. You don't have to spend an hour hacksawing a fire axe apart to obtain a usable weapon, which no one would ever do to a street sign for that purpose anyways. Axe > sign.

Agreed.

One of these should be just about the LAST thing you want on your back over hill and dale:

Axe_RH406Y.jpg

Hopefully... would give people a reason to dump those fire axes and motorcycle helmets for more reasonable tools and headgear, much more depth would be added to the gameplay.

When you say "wood splitter" are you speaking of the splitting axe? Because it appears smaller and much lighter than the fire axe to me.

They should add a proper hatchet, for Chernarus survival there's not much reason to go to the trouble of carrying around full-sized axes and they shouldn't even make very good weapons.

Axe > sign.

Axe > sign > saw > fist ?

btw you could also "sharp" the sign by flatting it with a stone or something. Sure wouldn't be durable like the axe but i'm totally positive i could split two or three heads with it

Oh and merry xmas :P but nice we talked about this possibility (that's what it is if at all)

want a lightweight weapon? How bout a "nailfist" ?^^ Nails / Barbwire + gloves (of cause gloves self crafted with burlap sack strips or something...meh the crafting never ends...poor developers)

I agree. That's actually why I envisioned a small town sign like Gorka's as a weapon, more practical.

Kidding aside; almost everything will have(has?) melee potential in DayZ anyway but also has a real use, so when you think about it, cutting signs is sort of a pointless game mechanic and gimmicky (see also, arcade, again).

If pipes in houses are "harvestable" with hacksaw or wrench and usable for pipe bombs or mechanical applications, I imagine the same pipe could be swung as well.....
