Time to reduce run speed with vehicles inbound?

Recommended Posts

During the mod days I crouch-ran everywhere anyways because of the greater threat of being seen by other players. This was the case because there were fewer military bases which made gearing up more dangerous. When the player cap is raised, and the chance of seeing other players is increased, sprinting will be more dangerous and players will be forced to slow down.

I still think the sprint speed needs to be decreased so combat can be slowed down and tactical firefights can see a return.

hell i'm happy to see stamina in Q2 in the road map made me smile. i assume that will be when they start slowing us down and stuff.from the looks of it its going to be an exciting year for dayz the game is going to change drastically i assume when a lot of the changes they have planned come into effect.

In my opinion it already takes enough time to get from one place to another, why would the devs choose to slow the game down any further?

I mean, yeah, I'm on my phone anyway during the boring running part, but that doesn't mean that's all I want to be doing....

It should take longer. This game is supposed to be realistic, and we are already running long distances, while carrying a lot of gear, at speeds about 30 kilometers per hour (AKA pretty damn fast).

Stop running straight to military bases, and take some time to see the scenery. Have you seen some of the views from a mountaintop?

Because we've only got this map for quite the foreseeable future, and the map isn't going to get bigger.

The issue you're stating is that it's boring to travel the map, and has less to do with the time it takes to do so.  The obvious solution there is to make the map more interesting between destinations.  Helicopter crashes are nice for this.  Vehicle spawns, even more so than the vehicles themselves, are nice for this as well.  I went out of my way in the mod to towns I normally wouldn't visit (shakhovka is a great example) in the hopes of finding a spawn there.  So even without a vehicle, you were encouraged to travel more simply to find one.

Making different towns varied in other regards is a good idea as well.  Perhaps specific coastal towns could have a higher chance of fishing gear, perhaps some smaller in land towns could have a higher chance of a specific type of hunting rifle etc.

Any ways, the point again being that travelling is "boring" (personally don't think so, but can understand) because it's mainly empty.  If your run speed was snail pace (no one's advocating that) but there was interesting stuff happening constantly it would still be exciting.  "Takes too long to get any where" just means there needs to be more places to get to imo.

I would be fine if they made the running more realistic but it would have to come with a revamp of the rest of the current movement system.  Even Minecraft has a better movement system.

Just fix the walking uphill first.. then slow me down dammit.  :D

Why? do you run uphill in real life? Are you superman of something? I even bend on 4 to climb uphill so i won't fall

As for the run speed ,i totally agree.

Pretty much. Walking uphill IRL is a serious pain in the ass. Ever go mountain climbing? Even on a pretty gentle trail, you usually have to lean forwards and use all 4 limbs in steep spots.

In my opinion making people slower is a bad idea, cause the map is large.

What we really need to fix is the stamina system, you should not be able to run forever. You should have to stop and rest.

Nope, we run WAAAAYYYYYY too fast, in excess of 30 kph I believe.  The map is NOT that large. Look at the distance between Stary Stobor and Novy Stobor; it takes about 3 minutes to run between them at the current speed.

Again, WWAAAAYYYYYYY too fast.

Yup I just shake my head at people who suggest you should be able to Sprint or even jog up hills.

It's almost like those people have never stepped outside of their house and never gone on a hike.

An improvement over the walking animation when going up steep hills would be a staggered walking animation the speed should remain similar.

The way I see it, after I'm done scavenging what I can find I want to worry about my next destination and not think, "Oh it's only a couple of minutes up the road at full sprint."  Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but I want the game to make me suffer and think about my choices of what I can grab and take before I journey on.  Are those shotgun shells worth it or should I take the food?  Right now it's guns and hopefully that will all change in the next coming months.

The game would be much better balanced overall with a more realistic movement speed. It makes the combat is woefully hilarious. The 21 foot rule becomes the 21 meter rule, and its incredibly immersion breaking watching some loon run around erratically at 23 kph, starting, stopping and turning on a dime with no momentum.

It also makes it a lot harder to hit someone when they're running ridiculously fast  however, I'm curious how you turn on a dime? I can't do that, I need to move my mouse a lot to do a full 360.

I most of you are exaggerating the final vehicle usage - it will require a team several days worth of playing to get the parts needed to get a vehicle operational (unlike experimental which is found fully working). With this in mind I suspect the majority of the populous will be on foot, and not want to be penalised as reducing move speed just restricts player movement around the map, something that actually needs encouraging. Plus, the advtanges of vehicles are mobile storage, transport protection, weather protection etc not map speed. Otherwise the balance of power shifts too in favour towards those that are willing to invest in in time acquiring one as you just shoot around the map after each restart sweeping up the decent loot from crash spawns relatively risk free, this makes its near impossible for newspawns and lonewolfs to aquire this gear.

TLDR: Vehicles advantages are not about map speed, they're about mobile storage and protection from elements/players etc

The mod didn't have any issues at all with people moving around the map. DayZ has attracted a lot of people that just want to pvp - people that want to play a zombie apocalypse have no issues with the movement speed as they understand the game they are playing. Because of the lack of things to do in the game, it means lots of people PVP and quite frankly, this lot can go for all I care. Last night me and a friend spent 2 hours making bows, arrows, cooking a boar we killed (with bows) and practicing our archery. We had a blast as it goes because we can find fun in the small things and take the piss out of each other. The funniest times in DayZ have been when we're just goofing around and there's 8 guys on teamspeak unable to speak because we're all creasing up, "Can someone give me wood?"

The movement speeds are going to be reduced and there's going to be further complications that stop people from grabbing a weapon and running off to a city. The forums will collect the tears of the butthurt and boil them whilst the rest of us enjoy the hardships of living in a zombie infested world and encounters with people we're not sure we trust, or we just want their gear.

I can run 50km/h. Buff the running speed, if anything.

LOL bollocks u can!

If a zombie is chasing me, ofc Im running uphill IRL even if its the last godamm thing I do. Its not impossible, just really tiring, and not even that much if you go to the gym regularly or are in the military. They run uphill a lot.

http://youtu.be/cMutg8Qup7Y?t=29m22s

Because its a movie im sure backpack was empty and the sniper rifle was plastic instead of the 16kg real one. But still, seems doable to me.

P.D: or at least they should make the zombies walk uphill too. Right now is pretty annoying.

Problem is not the speed, which, btw, is 26 km/h, not 30, and it is a pretty normal sprinting speed for a healthy adult. The problem is maintaining this speed for about 2hrs, or when you carry 50kg of gear.

For me this should go more like this:

- Sprinting speed for about 1 min starting at 30+ km/h and decreasing until 25 or so.

- Jogging at average of 16 km/h for 1 hour straight (this is realistic AND average for everyone who runs daily... which is every character ingame, so stop bullshiting on this)

- Porcentual decrease on speed and time maintaining it based on the weight you carry.

- Definitely running/jogging uphill, only increasing tireness exponentially. But if a zombie is chasing me, or I am being shot and need to get to cover, the hell im not running beyond extreme exhaustion even if its uphill.

- Would like to notice my heart beat somehow, and being able to run until I pass out if I want. I rather die from a heart attack before getting killed by a zombie. Just 4 the lulz xD

P.D: And btw, Navy SEALS are required to be able to do 2.5km in less than 7 min (averaging 22km/h), so carrying a relatively high speed for quite a bit is not beyond human capacity, though it is beyond average.

One thing they don't model in video games is that I can sprint fine, I can run up a hill fine but I can't sprint. When I'd about to die however, I can sprint up/over/under any object you put in front of me ;)

Why compare the characters in game to soldiers, navy seals or even adults in their prime?

The characters in the game are supposed to be in dire straits.

There is a lack of food lack of water lack of hygiene or medicine.

Expecting the in game characters to perform like soldiers would be silly.

The players should all look famished and sickly. The player movement should reflect that

I don't really want a reduction in run speed. I'd rather see a stamina system that is affected by a variety of factors:

-Weight of gear

-Hunger and thirst (including stuffed)

-Health (sickness)

-Dryness

A completely ungeared player who is dry, healthy, energised and hydrated will be able to sprint for longer (and maybe faster) than a player that is carrying a lot of gear, has wet clothes, is sick, hungry and thirsty.

The sprint should really be more of a dash that allows a middling player to run across a street and maybe get into a flanking position. It shouldn't be a means of travel.

I imagine that we won't see any changes until vehicles are properly implemented, so we can repair, customise, etc.

Yeah thats why africans hold most of the world records for physical endurance.

If your day to day is running away from zombies, youre going to have a physical endurance way over most soldiers much more sooner than you would think.

And why lack of water or food? This is not the Road, Earth isnt dying unable to produce new life, you know whats left in the world if you wipe out 99% of the human population? resources, resources everywhere. You would find animals walking on big citys in less than 2 months after the wipe out of humans. Every river would have clean water insted of contaminated, and there would be enough canned food to maintain the reamining 1% of the population for years in case you dont know how to hunt.

In my opinion what really needs a fix is the turn speed, momentum and what not. The combat is ridiculous. People just bolt from one place to another in 5 seconds as if they weren't there.

Needs a fix man.

The mod's speed was pretty good.  You could sprint for a short period of time (15-20 seconds or so?) then you would start jogging even while holding down the spring key.  And I'm pretty sure the 18km/h mod speed was based off the jog since that's how I timed all my runs to various points.

For SA:  The sprint speed could be dropped a little bit but I do like the idea of a stamina system.  A weight system seems much too complex, it should only affect the stamina.  You can't sprint as long nor can you jog as long before you start overheating etc.

But when there becomes a stamina system, I for some reason predict fresh spawns dropping their clothes and sprinting towards slower geared players and knocking them out with ease.

Even that speed is kinda crazy.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that a 5:27 mile?

The vast vast majority of the population will never even get close to running that fast for any long amount of time let alone hungry sick survivors.

8 to 10 minute miles seems far more realistic especially when weight and equipment is taken into account

Not sure how the devs will go about doing this without a backlash, I mean any sort of drastic change will stick out like a sore thumb. They would have to slowly nerf it and not tell us about it in the patch notes.
