getting the shakes...

Recommended Posts

Since we can  now go "Terminus" and eat people I find this patch note very exciting "  Kuru class renamed to BrainDisease". Does this mean that there will be a chance for cannibals to get Kuru and even the shakes ? Imagine you talk to some other survivors and they start getting the shakes...

thoughts ?

I think that's the intention. I for one am not dissuaded yet, I am still going to eat all the human meat I can get my grubby hands on. Even if I get the shakes, my axe will chop you up real good and in time for dinner ;)

Since when have we been able to eat people? Also, someone in faux-Eastern Europe is unlikely to develop Kuru, considering it is endemic to Papua New Guinea, as well as the "last" inflicted individual  dying from it it in 2005, AKA over 9 years ago. The Australian authorities stamped it out pretty effectively.  Kuru existing outside of PNG is a cultural phenomena.

Cannibalism has been implemented with the last exp patch ... Kuru has been renamed to brain desease and is not about  realism but about bringing some Book of Eli style features into the game...which would be awesome...just having the possibility to eat people without any consequences would be boring ...

I don't like the idea of "made up" consequences for cannibalism that have a direct impact on your character's health.

I think skinning and quartering etc. should just be an especially disgusting process that may deter some people from doing it. I'd also think some visual changes to the character would work nicely, like maybe sunken eyes or black circles... Nothing major you understand, just something that may change the way other players interact with the "cannibals".

Side effects of cannibalism are not made up.  Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy has major consequences for your brain chemistry which can result in tremors, loss of balance, intense headaches, and eventually death.

Kuru is said to be gone from the world.  However, it isn't too far fetched to imagine it making a return in a game populated by murderous #yolo bandits and zombies.  Eating people should bring with it the possibility of serious consequences in the long term.

Having looked it up a bit since I last posted, it does not indeed seem as far fetched as I thought. Still I have my doubts it's just going to be like eating rotten fruit etc. in-game. We have to see.. :)

I'm going to gut and cook fallen comrades, then slyly offer them some food when we meet up once again.

"Wait, so this is meat is human?"

"Not only are you eating human meat, but you're also eating yourself. Auto cannibalism isn't so bad, eh?"

I was talking about just a chance to get something like Kuru...maybe the more often you eat human meat the higher the chance you get a brain desease The consequence of being a cannibal should not be a deadly desease but more some random visual penalties ( like the shakes) which would have a huge impact on social interactions....

Would also be nice to see similar consequences for different playstyles...

why should eating human meat have any penalties when it is cooked? its not like human meat is poison or any different from meat from any animals

because this should be a last desperate option and not an easy way to get food  ;)

I don't think you people are understanding just how Kuru is transmitted. It isn't just "eat people, get Kuru".

Most of the prions (misfolded proteins, essentially, and, from one source I read, the cause of the "disease" in-game) are located in the human brain. Most of the people from PNG that developed Kuru were women and children, who would get the "less choice cuts" ( The tribal peoples of PNG practiced ritual cannibalism of deceased relatives), usually the brain and other organs, while the men would get actual flesh and fat. So long as the brain and other specific organs aren't eaten, the chances of developing Kuru are actually rather low.

In all seriousness, human flesh, so long as it is properly cooked (don't eat human intestines, you'll get nasty parasites) is "perfectly" safe to eat, and rather good for you (we are rather lean animals, compared to other mammals). I am a Wilderness Survival Instructor, and I have been asked this question numerous times and done the research.

However, it comes with a whole slew of moral issues. "Ritual Cannibalism" (like what was done in PNG) wasn't done for kicks, or because people were hungry. It was done to honor the person, and done in a highly ritualized and emotive fashion. They didn't just hunt people down and butcher them. Look up some "survival cannibalism" stories, and you will see a pattern: it was done out of sheer, last-chance-or-die necessity, and the cannibals usually felt really REALLY bad afterwards (like, self-seeking psychoactive therapy bad). I, for one, with my survival training and all, would be perfectly comfortable starving to death rather than eat another human being, much less hunt someone down.

Of course, in reality there is/would be plenty of other food sources in Chernarus, so I am/wouldn't worry about it.

I think Kuru or any kind of brain disease caused by eating human meat would be just used to get a proper ballancing of choices and consequences and not to simulate RL survival aspects. As I wrote before this should be a last desperate option and not a new fun part after force feeding and burlap sacking...same goes for murder...drugs...suicide etc etc..implementing such features without any consequences is useless.

No. Any sense of "artificial" balancing is detrimental to what this game is all about: a survival simulator. As such, mechanics should at least try to emulate real life as close as possible.

A better"balance" mechanic should be to simply have the player vomit regular food once he has consumed human meat.

Thus consuming human flesh means becoming dependant on it.

Even better than that how about keeping it realistic and not having any negative gameplay elements due to eating human meat

Agree 100%...the more u resort to cannibalism the more dependent on human flesh u get. Dont feel its a realistic gamemechanic, but we need something in place to prevent players from doing cannibalism just for fun. Because thats even more unrealistic.

One of the few things we agree on my friend

Having player rabid with cannablism who can feed off nothing else would make a very interesting dynamic.

These people would be forced to populated areas to feed and larger servers.

Creating a new class of player basically.

I think it's Okay to eat other survivors. Just so long as you can be alive to taunt the nasty people eating your leg!!!!

It's important to point out that human steak is only one part of a balanced diet.  You need to eat your greens as well people!

Seriously though there should be some kind of negative effect for long term cannibals in this game.  Human meat doesn't have all the vitamins we need to survive long term and the psychological affect alone would drive most people over the edge.

I don't care how bad the consequences are I'm going to eat it all the time because I have problems and it's hilarious.

Atleast make our clothes and hands bloody after butchering a dead person and let us be able to wash it out in ponds.
