BRM-1K

Cars will come, some day. They will change the way that groups control servers, and there will be a swift change from roaming bandit groups to well organized and managed groups who must adapt to the situation of the apocalyptic world (or in our case, Chernarus). Vehicles, presuming they are incredibly rare, will become a status symbol. "Shit, they have a car! They're high on the food chain, aye comrade tovarich?" However rare they be, a rusted hatchback or shoddy Lada isn't really a status symbol, correct? If anything, they're rather impractical and probably only a tool of necessity, no matter how rare. Group warfare and PvP are demanding, and a simple truck just can't quite fit the needs of a combat team. Chernarus is a heavily militarized country, bordering a land hungry neighbor and recovering from a violent civil war. It's not like they have anything like a...

BRM-1K COMMAND RECONNAISSANCE INFANTRY FIGHTING VEHICLE!

I can hear the moans, the cries. "But, ewwwww, survival game and stuff *insert poorly laden and clichéd argument here*!" The most organized groups are the most effective, and the most effective have the nicest toys. Your average joe Berenzino camper couldn't maintain a bike, nonetheless an armored personnel carrier. "What? It can carry troops, too?" Yes, yes it can! State of the art Soviet engineering, with features like; A FCS reminiscent of WW2 era tanks, a 73mm HE cannon, 7.62 coax, powerful optics, and a long range radio. Plus it can carry seven troops.

Listen, I know you said to not whine and complain, so I will try my best. but I disagree with you about the tank/carrier/BTR thing. Remember the survivors of an apocalypse are probably the genetically immune, not the guys with the best guns and shit. So these are most likely average citizens here. Sure, an average citizen can shoot a gun, maintain a simple vehicle like a bike, hunt for food, etc. However, an average citizen probably would not be able to fix a vehicle of this complexity. I personally would be fine with it, as long as the cannon and machine gun were not included. Honestly, I think in a post apocalyptic scenario there would be a whole lot more people driving pick-up trucks then tanks and carriers and such. I have the same thoughts on helis/aircraft, they should be incredibly rare and not include guns, be used primarily for transportation.

Also, I personally would rather have a pick-up truck or jeep or something then a vehicle like this. A, it would be a lot easier to get running and B, it would be a whole lot faster to get from place to place. I think military vehicles should be included, but not tons of BTR's and tanks and such, I think that having a hum-vee with a working LMG should be a HUGE status symbol. Heli's and stuff should be so rare that people should doubt if they exist.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. thanks for reading.

I would quit playing the millisecond they introduced this. Some things need to stay in ARMA this and RPG's are two of them. I would be all for destroyed variants providing specialty loot through deconstruction. But IMO tanks/APC's etc have no place in "DayZ".

From the few people that have already had their say I think you can guess that this is an unpopular type of vehicle.

There would be nothing stopping a mod from adding it after the game is complete though.

Id rather have wheeled APC, BTR series, BRDM and stuff like that. They can carry troops, some are amphibius, and they are more vulnerable to granades.

God no.

Keep the military stuff out of vanilla Dayz.

Leave the tacticool military crap for the mods because you know they surely will do that.

Have vanilla be civilian focused and the mods go nuts with whatever they want.

No. Just no.

Russian IFVs/AFVs need as much, if not more regular maintenance than NATO ones. How many survivors will know how to drive one, let alone keep it running?

And if you add IFVs, you need to add AT weapons to defeat them for the sake of game balance.

At which point DayZ is ArmA2/3 or BF4 with zombies.

To run off topic, Russian AFVs take less maintenance in my experience. Afghan National Army is using vehicles that the Russians abandoned during their withdraw. Its hard to keep an Up armored humvee or a MATV in working order with a working supply chain while ANA guys are running T-55 tanks that are fed with parts pulled from scrapyards and wrecks from the Soviet presence.

On topic. While OP's idea is unpopular I would like to see some lighter military vehicles like MRAPs,Soft shell humvees,BTR 40s and GAZ Tigrs.

No, just ladas. And one day, perhaps ladas with rofl armor bolted onto it. Once I see a group trying to look all badass with like 4 guys packed into a lada and another 2 sitting on the trunk, my dayz experience will be complete.

Perfect scenario....if you could shoot out the god damn car. Imagine car chases if there were guys in the back shooting out with great difficulty :D

These things *aren't* hard to operate, as Dale pointed out. They were designed to be operated by mediocrely trained conscripts pulled from farming families, and don't require a GED of any sort. Their FCS and armament is incredibly outdated, and it's a design dating back to the late 60's. The armor is paper thin, and has been known to be penetrated by 12.7 and 7.62mm rounds, as well as being incredibly easy to set on fire. This is probably the LEAST overpowered tracked vehicle I can think of, and the majority of your criticisms are bias and uneducated assumptions. If a resource starved African militia can operate this thing, who is to say that us survivors can't? No one but Bohemia, because you people have ZERO authority on deciding what our survivors can and can't do.

Besides, most of you missed the point. Instead, you read the title, and jumped to complain. It's not like you'd see these things regularly, probably not at all, being justifiably rare once loot economy shows up.

Reminder: Military vehicles don't "disappear" when the apocalypse hits.

While I disagree with you ( DayZ is our story, we can be anything) I agree with you.

Yeah, some people can work sophisticated things, some cant. Thats why I say make medical, maintenance, and everything as real as possible. That way, you either have to know how to do it, or read how to do it.

Oh, and op?

Heres my cliched argument: Your the same one that will bitch the day survival comes, and the same one who would patrol the coast in this for newspawns. I wish there was a rotten kiwi button alongside the bean button.

Survival and BRM can exist. People just can't accept the idea of an armored anything in the game.

And accusing me of patrolling the coast killing newspawns? What the fuck, dude? I support a more difficult game. Seriously though, how did you make that connection?

I actually suggested something like this on forums no to long ago. I said how it should be made as real as possible, in order to fix a car or something you should need to either know basic knowledge of it or look it up. It should obviously still be do-able, but very realistic. not hard, but realistic. My man reason for these thoughts at the time was that if I have some prior knowledge of survival, hunting, vehicles, etc. I should be able to use that to my advantage in-game. Good to know others think the same way.

Instead of adding Tanky vehicles, i would agree if  during the year devs will make DAY EVENTS where Tanks can only exist on that day and for specific circumstances.

It was Michael, George, and Steven. Me and skat3 were all for interaction, but the other three shot everything that moved.

But just don't bring up the whole fiasco with the Volga Limo's and satchels.

Lol, I was just yankin your leg. I think the only armored anything should either A) Take a metric shit ton of work and upkeep/fuel or B) Be crafted onto a preexisting vehicle

Newspawn killing is considered the lowest of the low in the community, so I just took it to heart.

But you're right, the thing would have to be justifiably difficult to keep for it to be ever considered.

A BMP is just too powerful, a riot van or maybe a BRDM [no turret but exposed gunner position with pintle PKM possibly] wouldn't be too much though

Good point, a Command BRDM with exposed mounted MMG would be a pretty baller endgame, while not being too overpowered.

Man, I wished I suggested that. Would've saved all the complaining!

Now we're calling even old Soviet APCs tacticool?

You may as well call the ashwood short bow "too tacticool for DayZ" at this point.

The only thing I will say in Cap'n defense is:

Yes to this, helicopters, tanks, heck even yes to self-propelled howitzers.

But it should come at a high cost:

  • ridiculously hard to find
  • ridiculously hard get running in the first place
  • ridiculously hard to supply with enough food fuel and ammo
  • needs a realistic crew to operate

To get those high end vehicles groups of survivors would have to put in a lot of effort and time and also require a quantum of luck. And then the core rule should be "nothing lasts forever": Your crew gets slaughtered, the vehicle taken away from you, it breaks down and you cannot affort repairs, you run out of supplies and cannot find any or someone just uses explosives/rocket launchers/mines to blow it up. So in order to get an awesome vehicle players should have to pull up awesome logistics. And then better enjoy your reward it as it won't last. If it gets used to terrorize the coast shooting freshspawns until some hero squad blows it up or as a "superweapon" to break into or destroy another teams base (nothing lasts forever - remember) so be it - its up to the players.

In the end those vehicles should be something like the "Deathstar of DayZ" and even extremely durable survivors should rarely see more than two in their entire life.
