Accolyte 1727 Posted July 29, 2014 Hey, I wasn't able to reproduce the problem on either experimental or our internal build. I don't see anyone's position on the map. Can someone else confirm this issue and/or provide a description of their actions before seeing anyone pop up on the map? Thanks!
pillock 850 Posted July 29, 2014 (edited) Hey, I wasn't able to reproduce the problem on either experimental or our internal build. I don't see anyone's position on the map. Can someone else confirm this issue and/or provide a description of their actions before seeing anyone pop up on the map? Thanks! I use the in-game map often, and I only ever play the STABLE branch. The map already centres itself on your location when you open it. Can you confirm this? [Edit: I have only noticed this happening since the latest update, but it could have been happening before and just I didn't realise until recently. I don't like it at all!] Edited July 29, 2014 by Pillock

pillock 850 Posted July 29, 2014 This doesn't seem to happen on the latest experimental either I'm afraid. Not to me anyway. I'll double check on Stable. But the important thing is that this ISN'T an intended design, right?
Jex 1104 Posted July 29, 2014 The more concerning factor is that it shows enemies. Also, even with an out of game map I know people who routinely still get lost. There's a difference between knowing exactly where you are, even on an incomplete map, than not knowing at all. Using an out of game map does make in game maps negligible, but using an out of game map you still at least need to know how to navigate. This makes it so you don't need to know how to navigate. This - learn to read a map and use a compass or get lost.
Lithium1056 45 Posted July 29, 2014 Gonna cover this the same way I did in a previous post. Maps should not "highlight" other players, if a position indicator is provided it should only locate the position a map was picked up, (good old fashioned your are here marker you'd find on tourist maps: IE Elektro police station) Provided you have a pen you should be able to make paths on the map take notes make way points for your self that only show up on the map, not in the HUD. If you get killed and looted that map still only indicates where it was found and whatever notes you made on it.In a realistic situation you'd take notes on the map especially if you lack a compass, you'd mark game trails and high population areas. Mark landmarks (your landmarks for navigation not pre-existing landmarks) you'd notate where you stashed food etcetera. Not only does this negate a need for visual indicators of camps on the HUD it adds value to the map, it increases player ability to navigate and survive, as well as creating an new social dynamic of giving well used maps to bambies and in between players
pillock 850 Posted July 29, 2014 (edited) This doesn't seem to happen on the latest experimental either I'm afraid. Not to me anyway. Ok, I just logged into STABLE hardcore, checked my map, and it was centred and zoomed on my position. I exited and logged into Regular, and did the same. Again the map was centred and zoomed on my location. I zoomed out and moved the map cursor somewhere else, then exited the map. I then opened the map again, and it was in the same position I'd left it after zooming out etc. It seems that when you first open the map, it's centred on the location where you are at that point; after you've moved the map cursor and looked at a different part of the map, it remembers that last viewing and stays in the same state. This still seems like an exploitable bug to me - the game shouldn't tell you where you are in this way because it should be up the player to figure it out. If it's not happening in EXPERIMENTAL, and won't happen in the next STABLE update, then fine, but I think it's worth noting. haknslash 763 Posted July 29, 2014 (edited) I don't have an issue with the map highlight. I never use the maps and rarely get lost but I play with people who are new and totally confused by the whole Russian or Slavic language aspect of the game. Add in that they have horrible navigation skills and this can really help them out. Yes it kills the whole immersion thing but for those people I doubt they care if it means they have an idea where they are. For them looking on the websites like dayz db for the map did them little to no good because they still didn't know where they were on the map and couldn't give us good enough visual clues to help them. Now I can literally fulfill my dreams of being a Chernarus travel guide and offer maps to newspawns! :D All that being said, i played for several hours last night trying to find the elusive tent but ran across several maps. None of them highlighted my position on the map. So perhaps this is just a known bug. Either way it doesn't bother me but i personally haven't see the yellow circle on the current exp build. SmashT 10907 Posted July 29, 2014 Possible a server was just mistakenly set up as "recruit" difficulty, if those config settings still apply?
Accolyte 1727 Posted July 29, 2014 Possible a server was just mistakenly set up as "recruit" difficulty, if those config settings still apply? Aah, good point. Should have thought of that. Will look into it tomorrow.
escobert 112 Posted July 29, 2014 (edited) Considering it's in a lot of servers for the mod I'd have to say it's not a bug. I don't care I know my way around pretty well after 400 hours in mod and 300 in SA. I have a full map but barley use it. I also have a laptop right next to my monitor that I could have dayzdb map up all the time on too but, I barley use that anymore. EDIT: guess it could be a bug or setting after these above posts. Guess I should read more before posting >< I think as others have said, it will help some newer players out that may use the ingame maps. If everyones so butthurt about it I'm sure it'll be gone by the final release. Edited July 29, 2014 by escobert

tootights (DayZ) 26 Posted July 29, 2014 The map now displays with a big huge circle where the player is located. As you can imagine I along with every other realism nut absolutely hates this and much to my surprise so does most people on reddit. How about you guys how do you feel about this latest change. I think that a map which shows your current position is called a GPS unit and this isn't it. It should really be removed.
tootights (DayZ) 26 Posted July 29, 2014 Showing your current position is the function of a GPS, not a paper map... I'm not sure what confusion there can be, here. It obviously should be gone.

It obviously should be gone.Which since these are tourist maps why I suggest they only show the location the map was found. It shouldn't update with a current location, I would support a movable you are here "sticker" so that if you pick up the map in cherno, run to NWAF you can move said "sticker" to NWAF then use it as a starting point to pathfind. Let's face it though even if it's included in retail it shouldn't "magically" show players around you and most of us (at least on this post) don't use the maps anyway. By the time retail comes out we will be able to close out eyes turn off the monitor run in a straight line in any direction turn and do it again and still know where we are. If they leave it in the simplest option is have it be a server check box option.

Log in to the game, open the map, and it's zoomed in to where you are on log-in. Pick up a map from its spawn point, open it, and it's centred and zoomed to that location. It doesn't track your movement while you're playing in that same server - it'll just stay in the state you left it after viewing the map - but if you log out and log in again it'll be centred and zoomed on your current location again. This is in Stable. Edited July 29, 2014 by Pillock

No, it should NOT show the location the map is found. It should show the location the map originated from, or was mean to be used for. Its likely you'll find a map on the other side of the map which has walked there.

Irish. 4886 Posted July 29, 2014 Needs more precision, all of the enemies locations, and loot locations with what is there currently. then the map would be perfect.. for cod. :|

DeatHTaX 1217 Posted July 29, 2014 I think this whole map thing is a non-issue anyway. Too many people will piss and moan about "realism" and such for this to remain a feature. Don't really understand what the big deal is
