comikz 218 Posted July 18, 2014 People trying to justify killing another player will come up with any excuse to shoot them, from what they wear to the weapon they have it's all used against the player in some way or another. I personally wear a gas mask, am I hostile? No, it just means that I like the look of it and so I wear it, as do a lot of people who prefer the "Look" of something over its functionality. So I observe people from a distance, see how they handle themselves when meeting other survivors and then only approach them if I have back up or the upper hand in the meeting. Chroma 61 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) I appreciate this game is a simulator and tries to be realistic, but stop trying to take it too far... OP I think the masks in general have a bad rep because it's kinda childish/creepy/how a bandit type player would want to look. I wholeheartedly disagree that its taking it too far, sure its a game, but your still mindful of societal norms, irrespective of simulation. You're downright hardwired to recognize patterns and seek familiarity, programmed to assess risk, and game or not if its out of place then its deemed psychologically as a threat, masks (be it payday or gasmasks) illicit a fear response because it emphasizes a party is trying to hide intent.Read into the phenomenon of the uncanny valley. Simply because its a 'game' means nothing, societal norms still hold true. Take as evidence Horror movies, those elicit a fear response, jump scares cant hurt you because 'rationally' its all taking place on celluloid, but people still get a fright regardless of rational logic. Its essentially the same thing, you wear a mask and you will be perceived as a threat, game or not its a basic human response. edit: spelling errors. pilgrim* 3514 Posted July 18, 2014 It is not instantly. It was a longer process. Like many, not all, stereotypes, also this has its roots somewhere. people who join the game to kos like to have a symbol to wear, to show their attitude as an all-or-nothing outsider with no care.Hey, I'm not against kosers - just saying, its the "wear the badge" thing. Like marking a bloody handprint on your face, painting tigers or sculls on your fighter plane, etc.. a terror mask.. its just to show. The most intelligent kosers or dedicated snipers (same thing?) should wear a gasmask as this makes your face less visible.. some do.. but most don't, and this emphasises what I'm suggesting, don't it ? Anyone with a payday mask, I'd just shoot them, frankly. But maybe that's why they wear it.It's warpaint.
gibonez 3633 Posted July 18, 2014 Nobody is a bandit or friendly unless there is a bandit or hero system in the game. Wearing a mask and thinking that person is automatically a bandit is wrong.
blacklabel79 949 Posted July 18, 2014 i sometimes wear them for fun, and ALLWAYS respirator if i can find one. I don't want to get the flu...( Zlu ? )
Mullraugh 1151 Posted July 18, 2014 Never trust a guy who hides his face. That being said, dudes with Payday masks, Gasmasks, Motorbike helmets and Respirators are instant bandits in my head unless they prove themselves not to be. Payday mask reasoning: "oh. I look scary in this. Cool." Plus. It's the mask of a freaking bank robber. Robber = Bandit. Gasmask reasoning: Well. He's hiding his face Motorbike Helmets: "They provide great protection against melee attacks and make me look really stupid, but that's okay!" You're obviously a bandit if you're looking to protect yourself against melee attacks. If you're fully geared and consider a Motorbike helmet your headwear of choice, in my head, that's like being a grown man who still drinks from a sippy cup. If you're fully geared you shouldn't be in melee zones (spawn areas) in the first place. And if you are, you're obviously looking for trouble. Respirators: Bleh. Respirators + Aviators + Cowboy hat: Shoot on sight. All these only apply to geared up guys with TTsKo crap and AK's or M4's or something. Obviously as a new spawn, you'll pick up whatever you see regardless of how friendly you are.

So we might as well put EVERYTHING else on that list to if your feeling trigger happy.

Wearing a mask and thinking that person is automatically a bandit is wrong. Its just being slightly retarded is what it is. A guy in boxers and a beanie cap can be a bandit as far as anyone is concerned.

That is ridiculous. I understand you killing people wearing a payday mask or gas mask, because they are obviously wearing it in an ironic way, or just trying to intentionally look like a nut job. It has nothing to do with facial expression, which isn't and probably will never be in the game.
Guest Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) The only things what's childish and intolerant is your pigeonholing about everyone who's wearing a mask (wolf, payday, gas, respirator, bandana, bla bla bla) is a bandit. I met more bandits without a mask shootin ya instant - so, conclusion should be: everyone without a mask = kos bandit. Everybody claimin he gonna shoot maskguys instant are the real bandits here. get rid of your stereotype thinking. Edited July 26, 2014 by Guest
