When did they make DayZ look so awful?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, they're different.

My question is when did this happen? It must have been recently as I'm just noticing it now. The shadows used to look leaps and bounds better. I haven't changed a setting in DayZ or my OS since it launched.

shadows are a huge fps hit on a pc. Im not suprised by the tactics. I knew it was going to happen

As i said it's a widely used shading method, it makes more use of the GPU. Deferred shading can handle almost any number of lights without an additional performance hit and object complexity doesn't really matter. While shadow volume performances are affected by light count and object complexity, it does look ugly without filtering tho.

@OP. It is a general practice for game devs to dumb down graphics when they say that they "Optimize" the game to get better fps. It has been happening for years now. But they will never confirm or deny it

maaaaayyyyybeeeeee thats because most people couldn't run it on those settings ? herpderp...

ALL alphas i saw during my time with a german publisher ran like crap. shoddy FPS, crashes ect ect....

ah wait no...its a conspiracy....( god those shady developers, always out to "optimize")

I haven't noticed any regression.  Then again I always play on low settings, trying to squeeze out as many fps as possible.  I can't wait until it is stable enough to run everything maxed out.  It's sad playing a game on low settings while running on a $3,500 pc  :(

If you're running on lowest right now, you're never going to run the game on high settings and get good FPS - it's not going to be optimised THAT much and when did you buy your PC?

We will never know until the engine has been completely revamped (in progress).

Good christ, you should be able to max the game with ease. Either A). You over payed waaaaay too much for AMD parts (Which I doubt), or B). You have become a victim of a recent bug.

looks good to me, uusally helps if you have the resolution set to your monitors main setting. One thing that took me ages to sort out was turning off ambient occlusion, didnt realize that was what was causing the ugly shadow effect over grass and objects on the floor

Even if I run the game at 200% resolution I still get the chunky shadows and pixelated foliage. The funny part is, it runs just as well at 2160p as it does at 1080p.

They definitely changed something along the way; the screenshots I posted above are proof.

BIS is slowly, but surely, transforming DayZ.

In two months time, the game will look just like ArmA 2.

In a year, Armed Assault.

And in three more years, the game will made its final metamorphism into Operation Flashpoint.

And hellfire will be rained upon Codemasters headquarters.

The sampling for deferred shadowing has nothing to do with screen resolution.

Yep. Only thing it does is it just sharpens the image so you see them even better.

I would love to see the long grass rendering moved further back so there is less pop-in as you are walking along.

The shadows definitely look better from one actual resolution to the next... they just don't seem to get better when you increase the rendering resolution.

Increasing the rendering resolution used to make everything look sharper (obviously), but now the game just looks shitty at 2160p/maximum settings.

My question isn't whether or not this actually happened, it's WHEN it happened. I can't find anything pertaining to when they downgraded the graphics.

The graphics are definitely worse. I'm not sure what they changed, but the graphics definitely look slightly downgraded from where they were a few patches ago. One thing in particular that they changed that I don't like is that you have to turn up post-processing to use SSAO. I fucking hate the post processing in this game, especially the forced Depth-of-Field effect, it looks like someone took Vaseline and smeared it all over my screen. So now I can't get beautiful SSAO without ugly thick DoF effects. Why the hell would I want DoF? I want to be able to actually see things in the distance...

Well there are many other graphic options that are broken/not working. They're not high priority now. I also want graphic options just like in Arma 3 but that won't happen soon.

I mean, maybe it's just me, but I'm not so sure. I don't really have two identical screenshots to compare, but check these:

BEFORE

p7AuIUZ.jpg

NOW

H7D7qXr.jpg

Keep in mind these are with identical settings; I've been gaming on maximum since I started DayZ in December.

Seems legit yep a comparison shot of two different pictures. The floor looks exactly the same as the first one I cant attest to the others since the floor is the only same thing from the photo.

I've long contended that most of the graphical settings don't actually do anything, I'm marginally sure that they're bugged and nobody's really picked up on it.

I doubt they'd be willfully gearing down their graphics when they plan on increasing fidelity/performance via DX11.

I mean, I'm pretty sure that the Ambient Occlusion at the very least is way bugged. It makes massive shadows in the tiniest of crevices, whereas before it just added subtle depth to items.

That and it's insanely annoying to have my graphics settings reverting back to "Normal" all of the time. That explains about 90% of why I think DayZ looks bad, simply because I stop playing for a week or so... come back (not knowing my graphics settings have reset to default for some reason)... only to be unaware that I'm playing a lowered version of what I normally do. So it takes me a little while between saying "Okay, let's play DayZ again" to "Hrm, this doesn't look as good as it used to" to "What the sex?! Why are my textures on Normal?"

Look at the shadows. Look at the edges of the gun in the first picture compared to the edges of the bed in the second picture. They don't have to be exact duplicates to realize that there are graphical discrepancies between the two.

The shadows in the second picture look like a freaking staircase. They're smooth as butter in the first picture.

The game definitely looks shittier. There's no doubt. I'm just curious as to why.

Its the apocalypse.

Without intervention everything has degraded over time.

In 5 years DayZ will look like Minecraft.

hahah... we might not agree very often..

but that post was outstanding....

The bed's shadow probably looked exactly the same before as now.

This is why you should have understood what Lady Kyrah was trying to say to you about this difference between the two shadows.

No there is plenty of doubt as you did not provide a proper comparison shot you showed a good well done shadow then a shitty shader shadow. You essentially showed me look the character textures look amazing but this grass looks like shite this games graphics have gone downhill.

Show me a picture that is exactly the same as the first then we can talk.

I'm not pleading a case. I'm stating a fact. I've been staring at the standalone for 1,200 hours now since day one. There's a difference.

But, for the few people here who would argue anything, I'll find an older screenshot I have and then recreate it for an accurate comparison.
