Dayz/Steam on SSD

Recommended Posts

Please move thus thread in the appropriate place.. using mobile device makes it hard to find the right place.

First of all, Im building this rig:

-Intel core i7 quad core 3.4GHZ 8MB cache

-ASUS Z87 DDR3 motherboard

-ADUS RADEON R9 270X 2GB 5.6GHZ video card

-16GB RAM DDR3

-128GB SSD

-512GB SATA Hard drive

-256GB SATA hard drive.

-OS Windows 7 Professional 64bits

My question is: Should I have the OS, Steam and Dayz installed on the SSD? Or could I have the OS and just dayz intalled on SSD while steam and my other steam based games installed on the SATA drive?

And this build should run Dayz with pretty decent FPS right?

Thanks ahead of time. Looking forward to get back at Dayz. My old CPU just wasnt good enough anymore. 30fps on a good day on low everything simply isnt good enough.

SSD is also SATA so yea'. You mean HDD. Just have both DayZ and Windows on SSD. You don't need whole steam on the SSD, although it doesn't take much space.

So when i install dayz from steam, i usually just let it go to the default folder, so once I re-install on this setup, I can choose where i want to install dayz to?

I just reinstalled DayZ to try and fix some issue. It asked me to specify the destination. I left the default steam location, but you can choose where it goes. Regarding the performance, I think it will do well, despite being Alpha.

Thanks for your input. Should be a decent machine. Hoping to see 80-90 fps in the wild 30-40 in the city as the current game is. Parts are coming this week. Should be up and running for the weekend.

1 SSD for the OS

1 SSD for steam / DayZ

1 HDD for various "media"

Don't expect awesome performance. It's certainly better, but it isn't an entirely amazing performance jump...at least with the latest stable build.

its alot better on ssd but only loading and slightly smoother feel. you wont fix arma engines by ssds.

I was under impression that is it enough to have 1 SSD say 256GB for OS and selected games plus classic HDD with higher capacity like 2TB.

But I guess if you don't know what to do with your money, buy any number of SSD's you like.

Install steam to your higher capacity hdd. Use "steam mover" to move just the games you want to your ssd. http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover

It's a cool little program that keeps you out of command prompt. Of course you could always learn how to do it with command prompt.

Previously Running 4GB of RAM on a dual core 1.something with radeon 4890 on the .44 build ... Im expecting a pretty good change in performance.

Especially with ARMA-games you will see a lot of improvements, due to the way the engine works. A lot of files being packed into .pbo's, which are packed files containing other files - similar to a .rar file.

This requires a lot of indexing, meaning you will get a proper boost from using an SSD with any BIS-Game (ARMA 2 / ARMA 3 / DayZ). I always install my BIS-Games on an SSD and swear by it, as it improves the experience a lot - atleast from a subjective point of view, but this is really all that counts, no matter what fancy numbers say.

You might as well... But 16GB of RAM? i7? 128GB SSD? Why?

Cut the RAM, get an I5, buy 256GB SSD.

Unless you'll be doing rendering/animations you dont need an i7 or 16gb of RAM for games.

I have a GTX770, i5 4670k, 4GB of RAM and I can run ARMAIII almost maxed 200% no lag...

8 gigs minimum for RAM. Hell, my browser can use 4 on its own.

Iv tried to tell people that having an ssd for a game that runs the way arma and dayz does is one of the biggest cost effective performance boosters, and i still get shilled by the nay sayers lol :) i know im right though so i jus shrug and bask in your correctness on the issue :P

i personally agree on getting an i5, when it comes to gaming, you can get pretty much the same performance with a little OC from a 2500k as most of the later cpu's most of the cpu benchmarks as u mentioned really only highlight the ability of the newer cpu's for multitasking and so on, also have to agree about having more ssd space, i personally have a top speed plextor 256 ssd for OS and my favourite games, then a slightly less fast writable 250 ssd (samsung 840 standard) as a sole games drive for any others, then a 2tb hdd for general storage, recordings and so on. i think op will find his 128 getting well into the 70-80% filled space on a drive that size, unless he gets really efficient with clutter clearing and setting all his page files off properly and setting them to the hdds.

Why an i7 as oppsed to an i5? Why 16GB RAM as oppose to 8? Because i got a better deal on those components and want to xomouter to max out games for a couple years.

You'll be able to play it without issue, but I think your expectations are a tad high. Since 0.46 went live, I've noticed an increased amount of frame-rate lag in most of the cities. Even in the wild, the distance a city would affect your frame-rate seems to have increased (e.g: the city lag still affects you up to ~2km away from a city, rather than ~1km before).

SSD is actually PCI-E, not SATA hehe

They can be SATA, IDE, M2, PCIE, etc.

Like others have said putting your OS on the SSD and then sym linking the games that you do want on the SSD from your Steam library is the way to go.

It's very easy to do via cmd, it shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
