Why does Dayz not have a proper gun detection system ?

Recommended Posts

Simply put why does it allow you to roam small spaces with 6 feet long mosins without the gun bumping into everything.

Essentially putting long rifles on equal ground as a sawed off shotgun and pistols.

when you approach.

Standard fare I thought for any modern game.

Hello.

this is actually a very good point Gibonez. I wonder if the devshave any plans for this. It would make the pistols and all the other short and small-sized weapons come more often in handy. Now its all about firepower. What person uses a sidearm when he got a AK on his back? :-)

What game are those screenshoots from?

Call of Juarez gunslinger.

cool game set in the wild west the story is pretty interesting as it is a retelling of all of the classic wild west stories from the perspective of someone who supposedly was there.

I guess its a design choice, as this was part of both Arma II and III.

Im hoping we will get it back, but i think theres to many people complaining about it in the mod.

my understanding is

there used to be one, but everyone kept getting stuck in doorframes and stairways and it drove them mad

so it was taken out, and movement in small spaces was facilitated

as you say yourself "standard" and "modern game" go together

let's hope DayZ doesn't go that way. The less "standard" the better IMO.

In the game at present you do have to learn how to move about, I agree.

There is nothing to complain about guns are long and get stuck on things clearing a house quickly with a 6 foot + mosin should not be doable. Not with ease.

I agree, but at least 90% of the player base doesnt, and from the looks of it, the devs might not agree with us either.

Thats clear from seeing how people have modded it out of the mod's mod, and its now no longer a part of the SA (cant remember if it was there in the beginning) :)

Damn what a sentence lol....

It worked out terrible in Arma 2, i guess that's why. It was utterly unpredictable when your barrel would get stuck. Also you have no proprioception/ deep sensitibility, making it uncompareable to real life. In real life i can lay my barrel on the frame of a broken window, or stick my gun farther out when coming around a corner, maybe blindfiring if i wish, in games I can't...

I'd really love a properly designed feature like that. But I can't see it coming for dayz.

I have to disagree, ive played many many MANY hours of Arma II and III, and it has become second nature for me to lower my weapon when i need to.

Just because its difficult in the beginning, does not mean its terrible, it is a great feature and its very immersive.

But you kinda proved my point here ;) so thanks for that hehe.

Really? I played alot of DayZ Mod, and it was utterly unpredictable there, and there was no way to lower your weapon manually. It just happened. Also in order for this to work, they will need to redesign the character colisionbox. It's too fucking big.

Double tap left Control, but I might be mistaken.

Worked both in Arma2 and the mod.

Hmm in games you can.

The implementation in vanilla arma was meh but in mods like ACE it was superb and worked fine.

More importantly it works perfectly fine in 90 percent of shooters out there not sure what the problem is here.

It is not like it just happens just keep your distance from the wall and have a plan when clearing a house.

dont go in a house with a full sized m16 expecting it to clear easy.

It was never unpredictable, but some of the mods did have custom buildings, which wasnt made properly, so some of the doorways wasnt wide enough and you would get stuck :)

Like Alsmir says, a simple double-tap of Ctrl, would either lower or raise your weapon instantly.

I agree, some of the buildings was abit to small and narrow, but it looks like they are adressing that problem in DayZ now, so theres a chance we will get it again, especially with the improved handling of your char, compared to Arma II.

It would be lovely to get the feature back.

It would be a nice feature, provided they can get the bugs they already have with collision detection fixed and adding this doesn't create a whole new set of them.  It does make sense that trying to more around confined spaces with a long rifle should be more difficult then sweep the same area with a compact pistol or sawed off shotgun.

Armed assault from the days of OFP have had the gun a physical object. This means you get stuck in doors or narrow corridors and can't turn 180. Whilst realistic, it's moronic because every single human being on the planet knows how turn an object to fit it through a hole.

The OP's post is exactly what is needed. you walk the barrel of your gun into something and it raises up.

If automatically raising/lowering the weapon to fit through doorways etc. was an option then I think this would have been implemented, but I think it would have been somewhere between very difficult and impossible in the RV engine.

With all the changes that the devs have planned for the engine, who knows though. Maybe this is something that we'll see in DayZ further down the line.

Yea would be kinda cool, would give pistols and edge in buildings, and esp SMGs. AKM is already very slow to turn around, maybe they intend to balance weapons like this more?

Also, you linked a vid from someone putting his gun on a sandbag. Thats not the same as putting your barrel on a less obvious place that is designed for it. In RL I can put my barrel on any favourable object, like a treebranch that happens to have the right height and angle for my target to hit. Also, Bipod could be deployable on sandbags and similar items. Would make that thing actually useful.

Anyway, what I'm saying is, if this system is implimented without enough sophistication, we receive all the downsides of having a barrel with physical depth but without many of the advantages.

Far from the truth, there a mod that does exactly that for Arma III :) Automaticly lower and raise your weapon, based on the distance from a wall and the direction you are looking in.

So it is very possible within the RV engine.

BUT like many other features, it comes with downsides and bugs, which makes it difficult to ensure it works 100% of the time, no matter what, at least when we are talking about modding.

I wonder how that would look if the devs implemented it on an engine basis.

Does the mod allow you to actually pass through small spaces when your rifle is moved though?

Yes, it allows exactly the same as lowering the riffle manually :)

But like i said, it still has bugs and glithces, because its a mod.

If this was added on an engine basis, it would be a whole different story, since they could tailor it to what they want.

Well I've 99% of the time my weapon lowered because the raise weapon key is very responsive and you don't need to stop in DayZ unlike in Arma. I wouldn't like anything automatic lowering because I can easily do it myself.

Yeah, but in Arma 2 you couldn't fit through a door sideways even if you were unarmed, nevermind with a lowered rifle.

Id go for an auto lowering for obstructions....or an auto raise like in the screenshots. It would just make movement more fluid and realistic. Still keep the manual lowering and give it the same effect, then you can tell if that guy against cover has his weapon drawn or has it properly lowered :)
