Stream Sniping....

Recommended Posts

Is it generally accepted that stream sniping is lame, or is it fine?

I can imagine it would be fun for the snipers but it seems like a very lame way of killing people

Don't announce on which server you play when stream, don't get sniped?

Feeling important enough to think care to watch you play is lame.

What is even more pathetic are the people who waste their time watching someone else have fun and play.

If you ask me for my personal opinion:

1. stream sniping is lame. its griefing on a meta level. dont try to find excuses, your objective is to ruin another persons experience. you're an asshole. deal with it.

2. announcing on what server you play in public and then crying about being griefed is lame. you're not a special snowflake just because you stream. you're not entitled to special treatment, protection or hugs just because you stream. and no, it doesnt matter if you have two or two thousand viewers. deal with it.

The most prominent YouTuber, PewDiePie, earns four million USD per year from ads alone, because people enjoy watching him play video games. Google is trying to aquire twitch.tv, the main videogaming streaming portal, for reportedly one billion USD. This is the reality of video game streaming. Watching others play video games, competitively or "for shitz n giggles", is a growing entertainment business.  Your antiquated views are yours to keep, and i dont expect this post to counter your blatant intolerance, but your insults are out of place. Just because you lack the ability to understand that others can enjoy different things as you do does neither make them pathetic nor their entertainment a waste of time.

Thing is, these streamers, all that needs to leak out is their steam name. People can just search their steam name and join their game even if they don't get a friend request accepted.

I'm not a Steam nerd but I'm sure Steam must have an option to hide you and your activities?

I AM a Steam nerd..... And I've never heard of a way to do that.

*I will now search on google*

Ahhh, I guess answering forum questions while listening to epic Dream Theater at 2 AM isn't a good mix for remembering Steam options and settings. Yes, you can set your profile to private, and you can appear offline. If you set your profile to private, though, I believe that messes up your trading options and such, so most people don't do that. And if you appear offline I don't believe you can play any online games, I think you can only play single-player games while offline. Anyway, my point s, while, yes, you can prevent people by joining your game, most people don't. The only people that would really do this are the people with huge fan bases, such as Syndicate.

So...would you be able to explain why someone spending their time watching another person play is 'pathetic'?

That is a very stupid comment.

I should expanded on that a little.

I find the twitch phenomenon of people paying streamers to play games kinda pathetic.

This is a relatively new phenomenon too.

it is irrelevant if you or me like PewDiePie. I find him unbearable, as much as i find Justin Biebers music unbearable, or Skrillex', or the paintings of Renoir. Its a matter of taste. A taste different from yours is no reason for insults.

As much as there are different painters, composers, tv show producers or authors who create content which appeals to only a fraction of the populace, with the advent of the new medium of user-generated video and live streaming we have creators who only appeal to a certain subset of the potential audience. this is expected. denouncing the whole medium and its audience because you fail to relate to it is, in the core meaning of the word, pathetic: it is sad and piteous.

If you're going to show people what you're doing/where you are in game, publicly on the internets, don't be surprised if you're sniped.  That's how I look at it.

You can play games while appearing offline. I think you're getting "appearing offline" confused with putting Steam in "offline mode". Most games should function fine while in offline mode anyway, save for a few that require a connection to play at all, i.e. Dota 2.

I've watched several different Streamers on a lot of occasions, I don't feel I was "Lame" for watching them, because I was enjoying what I was seeing...

As for Stream Sniping being Lame or not, it would depend on the Streamer and how he/she presents themselves, some Streamers don't mind it because it provides a certain level of Challenge and keeps them on their toes, and with how many ways you can prevent the Viewers from seeing your location, such as Time delays, Blocking out the Server name your connecting to, and also turning your profile completely Private and going Off-line it becomes excessively harder to be Stream sniped.

I personally feel pretty Neutral about it, I mean on one hand most Streamers are on Populated servers in areas where your going to see action, but on the other hand it does seem "Lame" to kill someone that you have a strong idea where they are by watching their Stream.

The thing that bothers me the most is the Streamers who whine/complain that they just got "Stream-sniped" when it could have been anyone on that Server that happen to see them.

I admit it. I cant stand impressionism, with the exception maybe of Manet and Cezanne.

No streamer can really moan about getting sniped. Maybe a little out of date now with no sidechat, but...

Dayz rule No.2 Never tell anyone where you are :)

Maybe stream sniping is what all the sidechat ambush baiters are up to these days lol

I'm wondering why you even need to ask this question? You can't work it out for yourself?

I know right

They should just get out there and play the game themselves

but don't you think pro football is a bit off topic for this thread?

I think it all depends on the streamer. if they're a nice person, not griefing people & generally entertaining, they should be left alone. However, I have stream sniped once, it was yesterday actually, & that was because the guy has his twich name as his in-game name. So I checked him out & noticed he was rolling with a crew & being a dick bandit to basically anyone they came across, so me & a few friends took them out. I think it was justified but others may not agree.
