soooo. Ashwood bow....

Recommended Posts

sucks.

I spent HOURS finding everything I needed to craft the bow, then, with the thing taking up a massive amount of space in my inventory I searched for another several hours before FINALLY finding a single arrow.

with the bow and arrow, I killed a boar in one shot. The arrow is gone, unrecoverable. The bow now useless.

So, if you didn't already know, its pointless to use the ashwood bow, unless you get super lucky and find a shit ton of arrows AND ashwood stick AND rope. Then? yeah, you can be a super silent death machine that can kill ONE target very quietly before needing to open your inventory and manually reload (which, by the way, makes a "click-clack" sound, as if you are reloading a gun.).

So, until this feature gets a little more fleshed out, its inferior to the crossbow. that being said, I would LOVE the damn thing, if arrows were more common or if they were craftable....

AND of course, this is just in case you didn't already know. If you did, then why the HELL didn't you tell me????? coulda saved me a few hours...

*DISCLAIMER: This isn't a rage/rant. Just passing along information. So don't flame me with "ERRREAPLHA". I know its alpha. WELL aware of the alphaness, and all that implies.

In reality, from what the game model is ( a bent stick with some string), the improvised bow would:

1) Not propel an arrow with any appreciable distance, speed, accuracy, or power

2) degrade extremely fast (unseasoned wood)

In summation, the improvised bow in-game would be next to useless. IRL, you CAN make a bow out in the field, and depending on your experience and surroundings, pretty easily too. It just takes time. Time and effort. To shape the limbs and make sure they bend evenly. To make sure the bow has the right draw length for you (VERY IMPORTANT). To season the wood, so it keeps the right "shape" instead of keeping a bend after being strung (which will happen with green wood) To make arrows (which in and of themselves can take a serious amount of time), and practice with the bow until you become comfortable.

Don't get me wrong, properly-made bows can be excellent survival tools and weapons, even compared to firearms, but they require some serious work put into them. I've made several bows before, and they all worked extremely well (took small game, seabirds no problem, and I would expect them to take large game as well, with their draw weight).

Here are some links to take a look at, and from what he saw, he didn't season the wood. A well-seasoned and greased bowstave would be even better.

Cringed when he broke the arrowhead.

As I was watching it, I was like "NONONO, TOO MUCH PRESSURE, TOO MUCH!!!" like a horror film.

Hoping for craftable arrows

Damn straight. Hell, I hope for bows that can be made out of most types of wood. I myself have used birch,  oak (a pain in the ass, I tell you, but the raw stave I found was BEAUTIFUL, and it could put an aluminum arrow through a plate of sheet steel at 30 paces) and cedar as bowstaves, with (varied) success.

What is funny is just how bad a little point like that would fuck you up.

Crossbow and the bows are completely useless and were a waste of time imo.

Having these things in a game where modern day firearms exist is a complete waste of time.

Against people these two things are pretty useless atleast it is now.

I think what OP was going for is that they need to buff the crossbow and bow, and start to make firearms extremely rare. I'd like to see firearms as rare as press vests, and make improvised weapons and melee weapons a must have.

Oh no, I agree. You cannot compare a firearm to a bow and arrow.

However, I hope it will eventually come to a point where ammunition for firearms will become rarer, and therefore primitive weapons will have their time to shine. Early self-defense, hunting, ambushes, etc. What will you use to hunt that deer; one of your precious bullets or an arrow that can be picked up and reused?

I also kind of want to ambush some big-bad AKM-wielding baddie with a bow. Yes, in a straight-up-in-your-face standoff, the AKM will win every time, hands down with room to spare. However, if I get the drop on you, and put an arrow through your chest, you should feel bad. And I will gloat until the heat-death of the universe.

It is kind of funny, the people who take long-term survival seriously, not the "survivalists" we hear about on TV and hear horror stories about with militias and all that, actually focus rather little on modern firearms and the stocking up of modern ammuntion.

Most of the people I've talked to over the Interwebz are more involved with "archaic" firearms, like flintlock and caplock muskets and rifles, and primitive weapons like spears, bows, and javelins. They are more sustainable in the long run, and only really require a blacksmith shop to make, something that (along with the related skills) would make you an INDISPENSABLE member of post-TSC society.

Yea that is a possibility.

However I think even then people will push their luck and use their first over going through the effort of finding a bow or crafting one.

Only time I ever see a bow being useful is if they go the Rust route and go full blown low tech meaning no modern guns and they go all out caveman.

Well, to be entirely honest, some of the people I have been talking to estimate that if a Total Societal Collapse (TSC) event were to happen, based on current levels of industrialization, urbanization, globalization, so on and so forth, the approximate tech level of the US would fall back to the 17th-18th century, as people starve to death, factories and shipping facilities(that bring in "modern" goods) shut down, and supply lines stop flowing. Everything would become more regional, with appropriate materials available.

Granted, that is merely an estimate, and a worst-case scenario one at that. But, isn't that what we are dealing with in-game? There are no factories producing smokeless powder, primers, cases, canned food, antibiotics, etc. It will run out eventually. (and hopefully, for that matter.)

Crossbow has the same nasty bug as mosin that your close range (or point blank) shot can skip your target.

I know the ashwood bow was just introduced, and so far I am loving it.

On that note, I hope crafting arrows and quivers will be introduced soon.

Also, being able to move while drawing the bow.

Lets say we can craft arrows, we have tents, and canned food is really rare.

Situation nr 1:

Drop all your valuable stuff into a tent. Grab a bow and arrows - go hunting. Gather enough meat for a couple of days, proceed with regular acitvities.

Again,  I hope that more animals will try tu run from us (like deers) because punching a cow untill it dies is... eh...

Situation nr 2:

Lets say we finally have tons of zeds everywhere.

Same as above: put all your valuables into a tent. Get bow and arrows, big backpack.

Go looting, shoot zeds silently so you won't attract more of them or even worse - players.

So I could see bows and crossbows having some potential in the future, definitely not now.

My thoughts exactly.

I would ad situation 3:

Stamina is introduced and players can't turbo sprint all day.

Yes a weight based movement speed would be good.

I am also tired of players sprinting at 15 mph forever.

Bow is silent, easy to do and it still has range. You can eliminate one or couple of targets silently unlike with a gun.

B*s*

It's not like every player will have bike/vechicle. On 40 man server only like 5 people that are squad members will have vechicle, 35 will be on foot.

If the stamina system is ready it can be added right now, no difference.
