How well do you know Chernarus?

How well do you know the map?

  1. 1. Do you need to use a web based map to assist you in game?

    • Yes. I am still learning the map.

    • Yes. Although more for the occasional referencing rather than guiding me.

    • No. I pretty much know where I am simply by looking around me.

    • No. This is because I didn't know there were maps available!

When I first started playing the mod, quite some time ago to say the least, I struggled to know where I was so finding a map was a God send. Soon the web based maps started to appear and they were a real help as they allowed you to have them always open on a laptop/mobile device (or second monitor) while you played. Depending on how much you play you start to recognise places and by the time SA was available I pretty much had an idea where I was without a map. Obviously SA continues to add new locations to the map, but even then if you were to drop me as a fresh spawn anywhere on the map if I couldn't give you a rough map location just by looking around, I would certainly be able to within 5 minutes at most. This isn't any way a boast as I imagine most if not all experienced players will be the same.

Now granted the knowledge I have isn't granular, and for comparison I will mention the old CoD map Carentan which after playing so much CoD 1 and 2 I literally know every single brick and I wouldn't say I have that sort of knowledge for all of Chernarus, but I could certainly tell you where all the relevant buildings are in a town and where all the towns are located and where those towns were in relation to where I am standing.

I've added a few options to the poll as it's not quite clear cut yes/no.

TL;DR? Do you need map to get around or find loot?

i play for 360 hours now, and i basically now the map pretty well.

but sometimes i use a map, to find out shortcuts, or the direct way to the next city (through the wilderness) instead of following the long road through many villages where i dont even want to get to

I've played so much that I don't need map anymore.

I don't think I ever follow roads, unless they are the straightest (or most level) route from A to B and by follow I mean run alongside in the treeline or a gulley so I'm not actually running down the centre of it.

In general though compass direction is very easily done either by the sun, the clouds or the stars, so in conjunction with knowing where you are it shouldn't be difficult to know which direction you need to go in order to get somewhere.

With regard to the compass direction, I do wish the clouds were a little more random. It's a wee bit of a cheat simply looking up an knowing which way North is.

I know the map very well, but normally I just use my "survival instincts" to find a location, or to see which direction I should go ( aside from using compass ).

But i also use a map ( Ipad Device called iZurvive ) to help guide my friends to the meeting points, mark places, find some additional rare resources spawn locations.

Not paranoid at all. Now granted in relation to the mod the number of long range sniping weapons in SA is limited so it's not quite so suicidal to run through open ground, but I still follow the treeline or use the terrain to hide myself. Running down the middle of the road is asking to be killed.

Memorized it long ago.

Less of it, now, obviously (at least north of NWAF where they're adding things).

But, I've memorized that west-east corridor from Svetlo to Lopatino that they're adding stuff on anyhow.

Bring back the wilderness dammit!

ive looked at online maps a couple of times over the years, but mainly use the in game map in the mod (waypoints are a plus), but i dont the map well off, even though most open world maps i can familiarize myself with pretty well.

I know the coasts well, and a few areas off the coast, and im kind of learning the road from elektro to stary, can get to NEAF from the east coast.  but i usually dont have direct routes, rather sticking to the coast and then taking a certain road inland and following it (sticking to a nearby treeline of course)

I think once the map is more fleshed out, particularly with adding unique landmarks and buildings (as in something not copy pasted around the map, but unique to that area/town)  I already like how they made the landscape leveling not so boring, with little hills and canyon-esque areas replacing flat land (best example i can think of is between elektro and cherno, the train track in front of the mountain passes through an area raised at each side, creating a small canyon)

I use the sun for navigation to determine what direction i'm running, then when i find a location i'll know where i am and need to go off the top of my head but for the most part even in the middle of nowhere i know where i can by looking at the land formation like when the hills end and begin, how many tree's etc. There's still an odd few parts i don't know off by hear but i'll roughly know it, specially after 551 hours

Hello there

I never use any external map. Only mermaids and goblins use those.

I get lost frequently as the majority of my time on the ground in Chernarus was in Arma and even then usually concentrated around a specific area or I had an in game Map and GPS to assist me to any target.

so when it comes to DAYZ, if its a area ive fought in before then thats great, i can navigate around the general area with no issues, but knowing its actual location within the wider world is tough for me and with the inclusion of new towns i get gloriously lost and I wouldnt have it any other way.

I play the SA as little as possible as I still want to be surprised and excited and most of all scared when I play.

Rgds

I usually have a map open on my tablet while I play, but mostly to help others I'm playing with who aren't nearby to me. I'll also use it to pre-plan a longer trip across the map if I intend to go somewhere specific, just because it's easier to look at a map than completely dream it up in my head.'

To anyone with the "Real players don't need a map" mentality I have this to say: I pity the man who doesn't use every resource available to him. If I can find a use for it, it's useful to me and improves my experience.

I reckon I'm more familiar with Chernarus than any real life 200sqkm chuck of land.

I mean, I don't think many people have that mentality.

However, people (such as myself) do frown upon metagaming (i.e. the use of maps which are not the result of in-game item acquisition).

Not to derail the conversation, as it's not explicitly relevant, but those are my personal feelings.

I see what you mean. Like I said, I don't use an out-of-game map much -- just when it makes my life easier. I don't NEED it at all, especially if I have a compass.

I'm the best player. Of course I need no map.

That's what happens when you're the best.

"I know where I am" to most players means, "I know how to get a gun from where the guns are and then where I like to shoot at people from". They would all grab the map if someone said, "meet me in Pulkovo".
