Mark Darkers 151 Posted June 8, 2014 Hi, I had an idea for the cooking system.Since there is no real reason why the cooking pot is less effective than a fire-pit to cook meat, I thought maybe "smoking" meat could be added, you know to keep it longer preserved.Because when all systems and mechanics are active, the food is going to degrade.I came on the idea with Sobieski Channel in the comment section of this video Sobieski suggested, when persistent objects exist, maybe one could build a smoke house? To smoke multiple meats and fish at the same time, thus creating a decent supply of smoked meat. You know it can be as simple as this. One could craft it simply with a fire pit, craft a smoke box with some wood (doesn't even need a tunnel), place the box in the fire (like the stones) and voila you've got yourself a smoke house. what do you guys think? Please expand on this idea, I think it might actually be a cool feature.
sobieski12 835 Posted June 9, 2014 (edited) Hey "Sobieski Channel" author here :P As for the idea overall, if the game is going after a realistic approach.* Cooked food should be eaten readily after it's prepared, but in time it should start to rot due to no refrigeration in the world. Thus a way to conserve food and counter spoil / moldy food should be the ability to smoke the food.* Beef jerky would be a perfect example Creating a smoke house would be an end-game goal to achieve. sobieski12 835 Posted June 9, 2014 How is that an end game goal? Building a base, having a smoke house in it.

DemonGroover 8836 Posted June 9, 2014 How about salting food? Not sure how long that takes though.
Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted June 9, 2014 (edited) I would really love to have this, and withthe food degration on the horizon,it would make an excellent addition. Edited June 9, 2014 by Damnyourdeadman
Draco122 412 Posted June 10, 2014 How about salting food? Not sure how long that takes though. Normally takes about 2 weeks to fully "cure" the meat while smoking and salting meat over a fire could take up to a day/day and half to fully cure on a hot day. For gameplay purposes I'd say to find pots or boxes of Table Salt in-game which can be used to cure meat, it can be added straight away for a flavour boost on some items or can be cooked to cure the meat. The longer it stays on a fire to be smoked and salted, the less chance of gaining an infection consuming it. For the record, home-made Jerky usually lasts upto 2-3 months while the factory manufactured stuff lasts for upto two years.

Draco122 412 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Something that i think is important in DayZ is the prospect of preserving food you encounter in-game to prevent it from spoiling by finding Items in-game which aid in the preservation. One such example is the addition of Jars which can be used as a core compenant in food preservation. In addition they can also be used as a substitute water bottle. An example is that of the Kilner Jar, a rubber sealed, screw top jar used for preserving food. Some Preservation methods:Salting - Involves Salting Meats to "cure" them, removing moisture and preventing bacteria from festering. Doesn't require a jar but takes a long time to prepare. Players should be able to find boxes of "table salt" which can be used to further enhance the flavor of foods and aid in preservationDrying - Involves drying food to prevent bacteria from forming Same as above, takes a while to prepare.Smoking - Involves a similar process to Salting/Drying.Pickling - Players should be able to find Jars/Bottles of a Pickling agent which can be used for food preservation.Fermenting - Placing Fruit or Vegetables in a Jar of Water will allow them to ferment, preserving them.Jellying - Mostly used for Berries, can be mushed down into a jelly like paste.Canning/Bottling - Stewing or Boiling food can be placed into Jars once cooked, preserving it for later use. Mark Darkers 151 Posted June 17, 2014 You meant salting. Old people who lived during ww2 always buy loads of salt when there is a talk of war. It's the best way of preserving meat fast and efficient. Every househould has it. Smoking is too time consuming.Well, that is true, salting is also a great idea. But for game-play and fun's point of view I think smoking should be added to, even if it does not have realistic measures like hours of waiting, I think it would make surviving inside a camp interesting.Like allot of people have mentioned before, its good that the game aims to be realistic, but it should not be hyper realistic. You know find a good balance between realism and fun, after all people need to want to play a game (this phrasing sounds weird sorry). But I totally get your point. And salt in houses would be a common thing indeed.
