Why I generally avoid servers at night...

Over the last week, I have attempted to play at night, but I keep running into two key issues.

1) Most of the servers are not very populated at night, for reasons that many have expressed already. This in itself can be a good reason to hop on the low pop server because generally the loot is untouched, but there is a problem here. This is not exaggeration when I say that most players who are running around at night on these servers have NVG's. I have consistently been shot at and/or killed by players while slowly creeping through towns with absolutely no light source. Well, you would say "Maybe you just are unlucky and/or stupid in how you go about stalking a town". I would agree with you here, but when running after being shot, dodging around buildings, then losing zombies, then crawling for another 5 minutes and getting shot at again, kinda eliminates the idea that they are not carrying NVGs. Right now, it is just too damn risky to have any sort of light on a server at night. Without a light is a problem too, because I can't see damn thing. I generally prefer chemlights over a flashlight or flares, but the chemlight just makes a glowing target. Players just need to get close enough. If a guy sees you with NVG's, you light up like the 4th of July.

2) Zombies are nearly impossible to spot at night. I am not talking realism here, but straight walking into zombies. It would be ok, if I could kinda seem them when they get close, but as it stands, they are little monsters in the void that can't see until they are on me. No, I do not turn up my gamma and brightness, because I shouldn't need to.

3) The last point and the most important point is that there just not enough players playing at night. I want to have some real interaction with people, but that is impossible at night since the only people on the server are guys with NVG's who PK and that number hovers around 5-8. I would feel more comfortable joining server that had 25-30 players on it at night. At least I could be relatively sure most of the people were bumbling around like myself.

man i hear you at point 3... most of my "real interactions with people" are being sniped (not so often cause i'm a careful/paranoid SOB). or more commonly being wacked by somone i just saved who is panicking... somtimes when i'm typing that i'll bloodpack them if they want.

we need to do somthing about the "everyone = threat" idea circulating in the comunity lol.

Was playing a server for a while yesterday and being a general bandit in Cherno. People kept coming back to Cherno to try and kill me and my brother. We were there for three hours letting people loot houses etc and then it started getting dark, and everyone left the server. Out of 40 people who were playing on the server, by the time it went dark there was only me, my brother and three other people left...

well out of my pov the darkness kills the game. a few servers the night time is more of a black/white thats okay because u can see a little bit but the most servers its like i just shut off my screen has the same effect.

ive been playing this mod since 2 weeks now and i found alot of stuff but couldnt manage to find nvgs and the ppl i killed dc to fast so that their body would despawn bevor i could loot so yeah....

without nvgs no fun on night servers

The servers just vacate when darkness falls. A great exodus... before 1.7.1, there would be like 40 players on a server at night. I have never seen anything close to that since..

The risk vs reward of playing on a night server just isn't there without NVG's. You're essentially just setting yourself up to get raped by zombies or sniped by the guys using NVG's.

Only way I would even consider playing at night is if I died and lost everything. Even then it would just be to make my way back to my tents on my home server.

I personally think NVG should go for a patch or 2. Just to trial it out. To see if night servers fill up more since there won't be a huge advantage for people using the NVG's. Also I think it would make gameplay more interesting. As you can easily get distracted by other light sources....

For example if you were making your way through a field edge in a tree line and a flare instantly pops up, you will imediately hit the dirt and turn your light off. You could easily hide by not moving and keeping an eye on the light source, but it could also be just a distraction and someone else could be moving around.

You would also be voulnerable to snipers as always. But you would also have a fair chance to escape and hide by fleeing the flare or killing your light source.

Now the sniper could choose to throw a flare out in hopes of seeing you. Or a friend of his could do this in the general area.

I personally think this is a much more interesting scenario.

Flares are the counter to night vission just so you know. If someone has NVG's on they can't even look at a town that has a flare in it.

That is not what flares are for. They can just switch the night vision off in less than a second.

Now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind seeing night vision goggles being removed. I've never played on a night server because of the massive advantage NVGs give

I don't really mind roaming at night, but I can see why a lot of people leave when it gets dark.

I think setting it up so your eyes adjust to the darkness would be an improvement.

That's assuming you have the chance to throw said flares, while stationary, after not dying from the initial ambush from NVG'd bandit. Surviving that scenario is about as probable as finding working Huey and no players around it.

Daytime: You are prey to everyone who can see you running around like a headless chicken.

Nighttime: Only NVG bandits (as in much much much less players) can see you running around like a headless chicken.

Possible Solution: Do not run around like a headless chicken.

I swear, PvE players need their hand held every step of the god damn way.

When I first started playing the game I went on night servers and it was great fun. But now that I'm a super srs hardcore player I just leave the server unless I have NVGs or thermals. "Use flares" haha, yeah sure.

Rocket says it is great to make an online experience that doesn't conform to the 'balancing' tedium that most multiplayer games have and I agree... But those games are largely free of exploits and the stakes are not as high. It would be very interesting to know how many pairs of NVGs were legitimately found rather than duped or taken from dead hackers.

I have a slim hope that in a future update they will try removing NVGs and thermals and it will make night servers enjoyable/played again.

So, just to make sure I'm reading you correctly, you're saying that your typical nighttime trip consists of one long unbroken chain of flares, from town to town? Because yeah, that sounds super safe.

How big is the blind spot caused by flares? If you have to stand close enough that it illuminates you it rather defeats the purpose, as he could just press N and shoot you in the head the old fashioned way.

Anyway, I too would like to see NVGs go for a patch or two just to see the effect it would have on the gameplay. It would also be absolutely hilarious to see how many of the "QQ L2P STUPID NUB" 'hardcores' would start squealing like little bitches with skinned knees when their tent full of easymode night-win buttons got taken away from them. Either that or NVGs need to spawn in more locations than the barracks, because it's fucking dumb that they're completely monopolized by campers and server hoppers at the moment. Make them super rare at deer stands, whatever, but make them spawn somewhere else.

When I have NVG's I play at night. I would not shoot someone crawling around a town with a chem light. I wouldn't run up like Ned Flanders offering help but I wouldn't kill them either. I'd just move off and avoid contact.


Don't take NVG's away. Just create a battery system.

continually throw down flares as you move around at night cos someone may have nvg? stupid suggestion. but so is suggesting nvg be removed.

to op: just because an item gives one an advantage in some situations is no reason to call for its removal. should guns be removed because they give someone an advantage over someone who doesnt have a gun?

You wouldn't, but most would. I love playing at night, super tense and exciting. Would love

to have the option to turn NVG off on our server. Level the playing field.

When I started playing a month or so ago, the night was dark, but not oppresively so.

But nowadays it's just a black screen I'm staring at. While I admire the commitment to difficult gameplay, there's no way I'm going to stare at a completely black screen for hours on end. So, yeah, daytime servers it is.

I personally am a night server lover. But I also enjoy playing with a lot of people. It's hard to find people to play with at night because of some of the imbalances that NVG's provide. I think NVG's are fair, but because they are so unfairly attained *server hopping*, it's not realistic to play against them. I spent all day staying alive, and your ass snipes me in the dark-of-night because you spent an hour server-hopping the NW Airfield for NVG's?

Also - I organize my servers by population / ping / numbers of slots left. Basically I try to join the largest, fullest servers. If I organize server by players over 50 with 2-3 open slots, they're more surely ALWAYS day. RARELY will you find a highly populated night server. It's really unfortunate, but it's how the game is for now. Maybe players are simply too afraid to play in the night, regardless of snipers and NVG's. I don't think we'll ever solve that one.
