What is the ingame map good for?

Recommended Posts

What is the ingame map for? It consumes inventory space, the parts need to be colleted. The paper map from Arma X (or printed from the internet) is much more convenient. Will the ingame map have any extended functions later?

Hopefully, it'll allow folks to write on it... or mark locations. And then be persistent, so it can be dropped/looted and read by other players.

However, third-party map programs... can, do, or could allow for that function anyhow. So, unless browser map access is made more difficult... I don't see in-game maps ever being useful.

Now my q uestion is................why can't I use duct tape and tape the parts of the map together??? lol

At beta-state in a few years, the in-game overlay should be forcibly disabled in hardcore difficulty (also hardcore-hive tied).

And yeah more advanced map features later on sounds good.

You don't need duct tape. Just combine "similar" parts by dragging one onto another in your inventory. Combine two halves to make a whole (N + S = Full map, or E + W = Full map). You can also combine "quarter" portions together to form halves (NE + NW = N map). You can't combine quarters with halves however.

The in-game map would be more useful if icons for Fire Station, Police Station, Water Pump and similar were added.

But right now it has value for those who get lost easily and like the immersion of staying "in-game" to navigate.

Ok see....now I tried that TIME AND TIME AGAIN pieces that were right next to each other and it won't do it for me. Other people said the same thing and since it just didn't work I didn't understand wassup. Guess my game was just being derpy lol

Like many other items in that game - useless

Yet it's useless, beside the fact that it feels better to use it than to check the internet.

Yeah I'd like to see something done with it.  In the mod, I routinely used my map to range find, as it was more convenient than alt tabbing for dayzdb (which didn't offer that distance tool at the time either).  I picked up a map the other day just to check, and while it does have a bit more detail now and would be good for the purpose (even includes a scale now), the fact that it's a bit of a chore to find the right map and that it takes up inventory space means I still probably wouldn't use it.

If markers were persistent as suggested above by Katana I think that would go a decent ways.  I often scribble down ranges on a notepad irl when I'm sniping, but I might be inclined to just put markers on the map if I knew they were going to stay.  Maybe some other tools, like being able to actually draw on it would be incredible but I dunno if that's feasible.

I'd like to see it refined a bit in regards to opening it too.  It loads a bit slowly and is awkward.  Basically it takes about as long to load as it would for me to check the dayzdb.

Only reason you could range find was because if the server wasn't on Veteran difficulty or higher (Mercenary), then it would allow you to mark waypoints on the map.

Its sort of like asking why do we have walkie talkies when we can use teamspeak and Skype.  ;)

Are water pumps not already on the maps? Either I'm imagining it or thinking of the mod or something, but I know I've seen an icon before in one of them for pumps.

So, what exactly are you suggesting? Just because you think it's inconvenient to use the ingame map they shouldn't have included one? Release a survivalgame without a map and force you to look at external maps you theoretically shouldn't have access to if you don't have a map ingame?

Only certain ones can be combined. You can't for example combine a North Map with NE to get N and NE, but that's most likely going to change.

Hello there

I too completely see the need for an in game map such as we have.

I like to play the game as intended, to me, using the internet maps (as well made as they are) a cheat.

I may not be able to see where the phattest lewt spawns but no real map I know does that either.

However, there *is* some room for improvement but its still early days yet.

Rgds

Because not everyone believes in Meta Gaming! I for one will never use external maps or TeamSpeak.

I'm not referring to waypoints.  I'm talking about using the grid to estimate range.  Something you can still do, but it's just not as convenient any more as checking an outside map.

I preferred veteran servers as I found waypoints trivialized navigation/range finding and I don't like third person crosshairs.

I disagree, he's asking for added functionality to make them worthwhile.

Walkie talkies have that to an extent, you can lay traps with them by leaving them on or whatever.  They aren't fully finished yet, but you're supposed to be able to listen into areas as well with them (don't think that works yet), as well as listen to internet radio channels.

Giving these items a bit extra in game, will not necessarily replace the 3rd party alternatives, but give incentive to use them at all.  It's not required by any means, but it would be nice.

They need to make the in-game map exactly the same as the third party maps, being able to measure distances and also marking certain places only then would i ever actually pick one up, otherwise its just a wasted inventory slot hope they do this at some point.

I wouldn't want to see them quite exactly like the third party maps, showing loot and what not.  Marking fountains or some of the more prominent buildings might be nice though.

As for measuring distance, maybe a compass (mathematical) could be added to the game, that you could directly combine with a map (so as not to have to waste even more space) which would allow for that or something.

I just don't want to see it become too gamey or trivialized but it does need to be more functional for sure.

Wow Lil touchy there guy....

I think he was just bringing up a legitimate point that there is very little incentive at this point to use this game mechanic other than  for immersion purposes... I think he was more suggesting that the map be made more useful. The map is so limited right now there are things you can easily do in real life with a map such as drawing on it that you cant do in game...but of course its alpha right?

i hate to say this, but the only thing that made the map worthwile in the mod was the ability to use a waypoint marker and run directly to something in a straight line. one of the first things many ppl learn is to shifht+click map to set waypoint then run towards floating arrow xD.

imho they should;

1. Have the map more detailed (perhaps showing Hospitals and other important thing like most any modern roadmap.

2. go back to single entity map. it is quite weak compared to 3rd party option that show all the best stuff and lot chances, etc. making you find it in 2 or 4 parts only makes it less appealing to use.

3. Local markers (you can place marks on the map but they dont show up for others)

4. Peristent map that can be left for someone to find, or given to a freind with things like stashes marked on it.

Different kinds of maps are proposed i think...tourist maps, topo maps (the one we have now) etc etc

Its like using TS instead of Direct or radios...do you use what is in game or 3rd party items? It is up to the individual player...me i like looking for the pieces of the map to merge into 1 single map, but using that map to set waypoints with your compass could make it more useful.
