You got those pitch black nights everywhere with no civilisation around (cities create some kind of ambient light that makes the night less dark around them) and weak moonlight (the African savanna provides a pretty good example).

As its after the zombie apocalypse there are no cities to create light. Arguably you should have more moonlight just to see a little better and maybe a wider cone on your flashlight or head torch.

Why is there always this one guy who always tries to justify the night in this game?

Night time on dayZ is amazing, the atmosphere that it creates is fun.

The problem is servers all run on their own (non-hive) times, so people will just leave and go to day time servers.

Or crank the gamma up. Who'd play with torches and road flares when someone else is using what's effectively a light 'hack' to gain an advantage? If Gamma can't be fixed, night play is a curiosity, not an integral part of the game that everyone has to experience.

I love night time, I love it even more now with no NVG.

(edit) add to that, was even more in love when my buddy found a road flare the other night lol

This is very disheartening to read and may be the final nail in whether I keep my server up.  No offence but this is actually kind of bullshit to those who pay good money to rent servers as this is a game breaking exploit and it's more of a slap in the face to know that Bohemia won't or can't fix it.

If there is any image on your screen at all, however faint and dark - if you turn up the gamma you can see it better. This is always true for every game that ever existed.

The only way you can avoid the gamma exploit is to have the screen actually black, with no image on it - just nothing there - then turning up the gamma will not make any difference.

You can't blame BI for that. It's like saying the sound effects in the game are "too loud". The player sets the volume, not BI. There is no way BI can stop you from setting the sound volume how you want it. Same with the gamma.

The problem with exploiters is - the more people who DONT do it, the greater advantage for the people who do exploit. So there will always be gamma exploiters. Also, you cannot really make it "more difficult" to exploit gamma when everyone has a graphics card "settings" icon on their desktop with a gamma control right there in easy reach.

The only way to truely defeat gamma exploit is to have the parts of the screen that are intended to be "really dark" actually black with no image in them - for instance to not render everything more than 10m away. I guess everyone can work out why this would be a very very very poor solution.

In my experience, a lot of people who "play fairly" and complain about gamma exploiters, also adjust the gamma  - a little: to their taste - when they play night. I do.

Orlok's solution is the way to go, but people always adjust gamma to their taste, this is what your PC's gamma control is FOR. At present I find the night great for wandering around alone, but I would not go in there seeking combat with my gamma level set how I like it - that is definitely too risky and "unfair" to me.

Odin Lowe's pics at the beginning of this thread show the one great unmissable advantage of playing the night experience at present - survival and exploration, not combat. Aint that GREAT.

In the country its very very rare to have pitch dark night.

Light pollution causes night blindness, not the other way around (you city dwellers)

But because of the way a PC screen reacts to light-intensity levels, as does the eye of the individual PC viewer in different circumstances - that is what you gamma-adjust is FOR.

In the early morning hours, roughly after 0230 the moon rises and it gets pretty well lit outside.   I would like to see more servers reset to 0300 or 0400 as start times.  See if you can find a server with those times, it looks pretty good when the 1/4 moon is up.
