Immersion

Recommended Posts

I love DayZ since the day it was born as a mod for one of my favorite games ever! It's been a long time, a lot of fixes and a bigger lot of bugs. But we all want to see DayZ become that Massive Multiplayer Online Survival Horror game it is supposed to be. So I want to make a suggestion...IMMERSION

Adding little content like the following would give the game a better feeling:

- Crows

  •  Crows love death, so what could be better than a dying country full of sweet sweet food? I'm pretty sure Chernarus would become the hottest place for 'em.
  •  They could either be some generic atmospheric prop or be (like the flies in the mod) at the corpses of fallen survivors giving away that Death has come to town

- Door Sounds

  •  I don't know about you, but If I'm looting a house and suddenly hear the metal fence outside being open I would crap my panties right there.
  • Adding a simple sound to the doors (like when you play resident evil 3 and go through a door) which zombies can't hear (unless we could choose to open slowly, in which case they should be able to hear when we open it roughly, but since that's a harder thing to do because of mechanics I only suggest a sound) would give the players some tension, specially for campers

- Corpses props

  •  I bet that the streets would be filled with dead people...cops, soldiers, survivors. Everyone would have died on the firsts days, leaving some corpses behind.
  • There could be corpses (when containers are implemented) that could be looted as any other container (Fridge, cupboard, cardbox, tent). Being a static prop.
  • The kind of loot they should hold is not discussed here.

- Roadblocks

  •  People drive cars right? most of them will hurry to the highway trying to leave the damn country. Welcome to Chernarrussian traffic!
  • There should be a lot of burnt, crashed, damaged and abandoned cars all over the streets (they would provide cover from zombie's line of sight and another players when in PvP.
  • It would add some stealthyness and immersion when playing, going from cover to cover.

- Persistent lights

  •  Burning cars would definetely light up the street as well, and probably somebody left some chicken in the oven...it could start a fire and burn a house or a whole building! maybe people rioted! and started fires with tires on the street, or burned some stores down...Now, I know that obviously it would consume a lot of buildings and everything should be burnt to the ground or maybe it just went off. But since is a game, even if we want realism, we must remember that. So this should be persistent, meaning the fire won't stop and won't spread...just for atmospheric purposes.
  • This would also encourage people to play on night time (which is pretty much empty)

- Zombie Sounds

  •  Zombies are not scary at all...specially for the sounds of sick animal they make.
  • They should have more classic kind of sound/moaning/screaming (like in Resident Evil 3) This would make players a "little bit" more scared than they current sound

- Weapon damage

  •  I kill a zombie with 1 shot of the M4 to the chest, even if that zombie is wearing a military kevlar vest. That's...weird, I mean is cool that I only need 1 bullet, but it doesn't feel like a zombie game.
  • They should all die from ONE SHOT to the head, no matter what gun you use.
  • In the case of melee, it would depend. Axes, Pitchforks, Picaxe, Knife, Screwdriver, Crowbar should kill with one good hit to the head of the zombie, but Baseball bat, Fire extinguisher and such should take more than one to the head.
  • The body, on the other hand should take some time with melee and a couple more of bullets with guns (let's say 4 CZ75 shots)
  • Magnum, Shotgun and Crossbow are 1 shot kill for zombies of course

- Proper "cities"

  •  There's a school, firestation, supermarket, pharmacy, police station and mall in every city in my country...it's a little bit weird to see towns with no corner store. And I see a lot of green between cities, Using that space to make something more urban will add a lot, since 90% of the players live in cities. Would give a more personal feeling.
  • The feeling of a more CITY, instead of a countryside, would really improve the way people approach the game

- Verticallity

  •  Highways, bridges, slopes...I love Svetlojarsk stairs in the sidewalk. That's a good example of what I suggest here,
  • Imagine walking down the main road and look up to the border of the highway to see if there's a bandit sniping. Oh...the tension <3

- Kinds of Zombies

  •  I suggest the following:
  1. Walking Zombie: Walk slow, easy to kill, does have a big detection radius. In hordes means a REAL threat
  2. Jogging Zombie: maybe the MOST common kind of zombie in Chernarus, has a moderated detection radius and follows you for a while meaning a real threat
  3. Crawling Zombie: Just like in the mod, these zombies don't go too fast, they don't have any legs. Screams a lot and follows you around a while
  4. Running Zombie: Rather uncommon kind of zombie, runs towards you for a long long time, probably until one of you dies. has a moderated detection radius

- The Danger

  •  Zombies should be the primary danger in the game, making them easy to kill but hard to control when they start to surround you downtown, approaching slowly, from every corner, going into every building, screaming while they go to eat you up

PS:

  • I know I used the word "should" a lot, I don't intend to sound as a boss or like I'm DEMANDING something, so if I sounded like that I apologize
  • I know this is a lot of reading. So if anyone got THIS far...thanks a lot
  • I hope these ideas make it to the game in some way at least, I really love the game and the immersion is something currently absent
  • All the videos are just to show a remote example idea of what I try to explain here
  • I know most things are hard to do. I am no designer/developer, I'm just trying to give ideas
  • Sorry for all the Resident Evil references, that's the first and best zombie game I've played

I like seeing people suggest things that they would like to see; that's part of the whole alpha experience, is for people to play the game in its current state and come up with ideas that might add to the game and make it better. Of course, there are always the idiots who just come on and say "that's stupid" or "you're an idiot", or, even more in-depth and constructive, "no". You just need to ignore these morons, because they obviously can't come up with a reasonable explanation for their objection, let alone any good ideas themselves. And I think that these are all good ideas.

I'd also like to see more stable objects to stand on so they don't push us off or run into it then fall off (Such as large hotel buildings and towers: CLICK HERE)

Hehe.. The weapon collision kicks in, and is greater than the rails collision.. every time I see someone up the, I fire a few pot shots at them and watch them get pooped out.

Yeah, this is another great example of what happened to me before that didn't involve running into them :P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThrB8Io_OGA#t=77

I'm sure these are things the devs would like to add, but it's a matter of optimization. The more of that kind of thing you add to the world, the heavier it becomes for clients and servers to handle.

Perhaps if such things were added, it would be possible to turn beautification elements on or off on the server side, so you would have sets of servers that were powerful and were stamped with "Beautified" on the description, and were generally meant for players with more powerful pcs.

about sounds, yeah i am really hoping they get this fixed by the time the game comes out, new door/gate sounds, and all sounds that are currently not working properly

abolut cities or towns, i agrtee they are too repetitive in some ways,  i did make a post about reversing the supermarket model in some town just to avoid the repetivive feeling. i mean having the same model for the supermarket, but just flipped around (to avoid designing a completely new one) and this could (maybe) apply to some other buildings?

there are other shop type buildings tho? i guess they arent "corner shops" but the ones with shutters, and other buildings that look like they would have been shops or stores of some kind, with signs outside.

i think we will not have cities much larger than we have already, unless they manage to make the larger towns we have work more than 30fps.

I think mostly this. The audio in the game is awful, you have to look over walls with third person to see if people are 20m away even though they have big hiking boots and a backpack full of bullets and other things that would be making a TON of noise in real life.

It's really crap that you can't hear doors too you could be quietly chowing down on a precious can of tactical bacon only for some douche to walk in behind you undetected and shoot you in the head, which more often than not they will do.

Also if you're in a two story building you should definitely hear people walking up stairs it's really lame that everyone is virtually silent until they're close enough to kill you
