maninthewall 470 Posted May 3, 2014 I don't really care how many times you say you're friendly, or how many times you want to help me, if you have any mask on, you're a moving target in my book Anyone else? They're basically made for bandits
comikz 218 Posted May 3, 2014 I used to think that anyone wearing a Payday/Gasmask was indeed a "Bandit" and as such considered "Hostile" but I have learned that these people either are just fans of the Payday series of games, or in the case of the Gasmask they believe it "Looks" cool. I tend to observe these people from a distance and try and decipher if they are indeed "Friendly" such as watching them when they notice another player, and so forth, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, even if it costs me my life.
Katana67 2907 Posted May 3, 2014 Regardless of whether or not someone's wearing a mask, my player encounters pretty much consist of. 1. He or she sees me/might've seen me/is going to the same place as me... light em' up. 2. He or she doesn't see me/is going away from where I'm headed... leave em' be. Knock (DayZ) 111 Posted May 3, 2014 No. For me, they're not a target just because of the mask they're wearing... they're a target because they could threaten my safety. You could be wearing a bunny suit and I still wouldn't hesitate to shoot if I had to. Back when standalone first came out, me and my group used masks to differentiate between each other at one point. Because back then we mainly wore Ttsko stuff. That doesn't make us bandits. Hell, back then I didn't even know if they provided extra protection when being shot at or not.
hannibaldaplaya 1095 Posted May 3, 2014 I like the way the Gas Mask looks and will wear it even more once we get some more duster-style coats and the AKM, so I can yell at people from afar, "Get out of here Stalker," though I'd probably need a balaclava to fit the role.
Whyherro123 2283 Posted May 3, 2014 There have actually been several studies done examining the effect of the human face on our psychology. All of the studies have effectively discovered that it is our face that "Makes us human", in a sense. Specifically, soldiers in WW2 had a lot of trouble firing on the enemy when they could see their face. When they were covered up, they reported it was much easier to fire on them. So, effectively, if you cover your face, you are often seen as "not/other than human". This is actually the major reason why in films, the protagonists and sympathetic villains have uncovered faces, and why supporting antagonists and protagonists (red-shirts, characters made to die, essentially) often wear masks or full-face helmets. Because we can see the faces of the main characters, we can sympathize with them much easily when they get injured or killed.
anothercynicalbrit 166 Posted May 3, 2014 My group all wear masks just so we know who we are, simply because people like yourself don't wear them making it a lot easier for us to recognize each other. Does that make us bandits, hell no just ask the people we meet. I find that if people are hostile they will be hostile whether you have a mask on or not, that seems like a petty excuse to me. Irish. 4886 Posted May 3, 2014 Wearing a mask only can mean one of 2 things: You're still new, or you just dont give a eFF.
Daemonkid 493 Posted May 3, 2014 Yes, keep wearing those bright white masks. It makes it easier to spot you in a bush.
DirtyWings 51 Posted May 3, 2014 Don't judge a book by its cover?
Irish. 4886 Posted May 3, 2014 (edited) Don't judge a book by its cover?I agree. But in their defense its a common human reaction, to create answers for the unknown inside your head. People thinking those in military gear are threats fail to recognize the scores of hero and medic players that are fully geared in military. Those who log into a military base must be server hopping, may have just got a disconnect/kick/or like the high tension spawn-ins. Those with masks are bandits, etc. may just be a player who thinks the look is cool. People with bright clothing might be total psychos. You never know and creating a scenario based off, like you said, a cover is useless. Observe their actions and then you might be able to judge what type of player they are. Go off their clothing and you just set yourself up for assumptions. Edited May 3, 2014 by lrish
mithrawndo 166 Posted May 3, 2014 Human beings have a predisposition for spotting patterns. It gets us in all kinds of trouble, as it leads us to doing Bad Science and making Assumptions. The "fact" that anyone wearing a mask is hostile is one of these. There is no magical pattern for spotting hostile players.
