Having at least one real city in the map

Recommended Posts

Maybe it could be nice to have at least one real urban environment. Maybe in Cherno, maybe somewhere else...

The atmosphere of the game is quite rural that's why I'm suggesting only one city, but a big place that may have been home of 40.000 or 50.000 chernarussians before the apocalypse.

You will tell Cherno is a city, but I would answer it's not. Cherno is a town (no more than 5-6000 inhabitants) as Elektro or Berezino and most other places are just villages or hamlets.

It would be cool to see Cherno extend (it been extend already with the tower neighborhoods) even more on the hills and of course along the coast... Balota, maybe Elektro would became some suburb areas of Cherno.

I'm not suggesting this because I used to PVP in those zones and I want more urban fighting (In fact I never been to Cherno, I'm just very good at reading a map since I'm designing some), but just because a real urban zone is missing in the map, so it would be nice to add at least one.

Anyway, a big city can only bring many new opportunities of all kind.

Post some comments about the idea or the location you would see a city.

(For my part, I think Berezino is the best location in an urban planning point of view, but Cherno is the capital... so...)

I totally agree. I would make it around Stary Sobor probably though.

A 'real' city would probably take up most of the map.  Chearus is a 2nd worlder, and the section we play in is mostly farmland/woods.  They're not gonna plop down a major city in the middle of farmland.  Most of the farmers live on their property, and Cherno has a SHIT TON of apartments/Tenements in the hills surrounding it.  I would assume that would not only house the residents of Cherno, but also the workers who commute to the nearby factories.  Keep in mind the map's a work of progress, we get new buildings added to existing towns, and there's still more towns and villages to add (you might get your wish up north, don't know if it'll fit your expectation for a city).  Now if you're expecting New York or London it's not gonna happen.

Different countries have different criteria about what a city is.

In England, you need a cathedral to be a city.

In the USA, I've driven through cities where the "Welcome to..." and "You are leaving.... Please come again!" signs on the main highway are just a block apart.

Well I see the need for a giant lustrous city like New York City (seeing as its a huge city but not compared to the state) but I can see the argument that it would look incredibly weird in the middle of all the farms .. Maybe once islands are placed out in the ocean areas (I've heard this might happen ) we could have some ridiculous city on an island (like Honolulu, Hawaii) I would most likely make a trip out to this island a lot if it had an amazing city placed on it ... Of course it won't be tropical it will be a dark and rainy Eastern European island adding to the scariness of the city at night ...

id prefer to get good fps in the large towns we have, before getting anything like a city area

It's possible that one day it might happen as Chernogorsk is not the capital of the country.  In fact what we have now is mostly the Eastern portion of Chernarus.  The country itself is much bigger with Novigrad being the capital, so who knows maybe one day we will get the entire nation of Chernarus open for us to explore.  Possibly even Takistan.  :)

Well, a city like NY or London counting several millions inhabitants would covering more than just the map. I was talking about 40 or 50 thousands of people. That should be a small city but still a real city since Cherno right now is looking nothing more than a big village with a couple of factories and tower neighborhoods.

Well, my criteria was the size mostly. Chernogosk may have a cathedral it will not change the fact that it is very small.

Finally, I'm pretty aware about the performance problem, I got some myself. I'm suggesting this and would like to see it only if it's possible.

No need to have it done tomorrow. This is just an idea as I see it's missing to the map and so the game only can be better if it got it, in my opinion.

I edit this a bit.

I was wrong, Chernogosk may not have even a thousand inhabitants, and we should have a city not more than 10 000.

Have a look at that link...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagan,_Russia

and look for the city size on google map.

This is the kind of city I am talking about.

Sometimes it's better to have amazing gameplay and experiences than realism. Sure, this is a simulator set in a rural part of a country, but why do we have to create within these limits? I want this game to be successful and not for the minority of the gaming community. I have tried to convince my friends to buy the game so I wouldn't be lonely walking the wastes but the empty hills and forests just doesn't grab them.

Put the 50 thousand population city in, because zombie infested farmland makes for a shitty game.

ive always wanted something like this. like, compared to cherno my villiage is huge, and it's only like 14,000 people. like it's HUGE compared to cherno. it's not very urbanized though. i mean, i can run across my villiage in like half an hour and it'd take me like literally 5 minutes to run across cherno in real life. it's tiny. do people really call it a city? even with the "oh so many towers" in the hills, it's still freakin' tiny. where i live, that's a villiage. cherno is like a city block. we need some major extensions.

When the modding community becomes active, i can see them making "Novigrad". As a small map, but nearly all Urban, with suburban on the edges.

I'm not exactly a genius when it comes to modding, but would merging elektro, balota and cherno into a large city really make for a huge impact on performance. No buildings will be added and the buildings are already somewhat close to eachother.

There's already too many towns - seriously add something else in or just leave the countryside. How about instead

A Carnival/Fair

A crossbike circuit

A proper farm with fields of corn and wheat with an individual farm house

A River

A lake

A river that feeds into a lake

2 lakes shaped like boobs

2 lakes shaped like boobs with a long straight river flowing between them

oh...

Cherno's real life equivalent apparently has 90,000 people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Ast%C3%AD_nad_Labem

ArmA engine isn't exactly great for building huge cities, but I guess a bigger one is possible.

What make you think this is cherno equivalent ?

I don't really know Arma engine btw, I played no Arma... What I think as an urbanist is, there are in the map too much small villages, too near from each others.

Bigger villages more far one from each others with some small hamlet and farms in between should be more close of reality rural landscape.

Guess it is too late now for start the map again, hehe.

Chenarus was made with real life satellite data of the Czech Republic.  If you google maps Ústí nad Labem you'll see.  The coastline of Chenarus is actually the river in real life, the towns don't quite coincide with each other but the terrain does.  I would disagree that the city mentioned is the equivalent of Cherno, as it would span from beyond Kameneka to where Chenro is, to a bit north of Zeleno, and actually be across the 'river' as well.

And yeah, it's a bit late to redo the map completely.  There was mention of wanting to do a 'Western' Map, but that would take a while even if they started working on it right now.

Oh yeah I took the wrong city, Povrly was Elektro and the other city right beside Ustí nad Labem is Cherno. If you look at the satellite pics you can even see the three commie block suburbs they added.

I thought it was pretty interesting so i made this map to compare the areas (Don't derail the thread any further pls  )

The map feels like a bunch of ghost towns built on a low budget and never finished. No place looks like it once had people inhabiting it and things happened. The only exception is the Green Tower base and the crashed plane.

This is what you get when you port a map from a 2009 non-zombie game that has very little detail and authenticity.
