leviathanapsu 94 Posted April 28, 2014 I finally had the funds come through to purchase the game and have been playing for the last few hours. There's a steep learning curve at first I have to say. Life 1 - Apparently I was stuck in run mode because I was making enough noise to attract every zombie in the town even while crouching. I knocked one out and tried to run away, but they never seemed to lose my trail despite weaving around buildings and I was eventually ripped limb from limb. Life 2 - After consulting the guilde, I realized I needed to use certain keys to ensure I wasn't in a running crouch and proceeded to go exploring. Unfortunately I accidentally stepped right in the line of sight for a zombie and died while trying to figure out how to climb a ladder out of it's reach. Life 3 - Starting to feel like Lazarus from coming back to life so many times, I managed more caution this time. I found a fire extinguisher and even managed to kill a couple zombies who ran up to me. Great! Unfortunately the last one damaged all of my rags and it said I couldn't use them to stop the bleeding. I died looking for something to stop the flow of blood. Life 4 - This one was going great. I had full hydration, I managed to find a lot of food and the only down side was losing a pair of binoculars to a server restart. I wandered through a pretty much empty server until it dropped the connection and decided that with a number of items in my pack and fully refreshed, I would go join a newbie friendly server to try my hand at interaction. I suspect the listing of 'newbie friendly' was a trap however as I was KoSed from behind despite not having a gun and not a single word being spoken to me. Note to self, ignore any server claiming to be newbie friendly. Life 5 - To be seen. I expect to start sometime after dinner now that I have a better feel for the controls and a grasp on the basics of the system. I still haven't found a single gun, so maybe this one will be the time. I think I will also have to work on minding my surroundings better while I manage my inventory. That little KoS incident asside, I am pleased with the game so far. I haven't experienced most of the glitches everyone frequently complains about so far. Killed a zombie with my firsts more than once and once I had the machete it was easy enough to survive an encounter. I did get a little bit of zombie ghosting through walls, but even that was pretty minor. I think once I am a bit more skilled with the controls, I am going to have a blast with this game.
Max Planck 7174 Posted April 28, 2014 Nice write-up.On my first life (in the mod) I got lost in the woods and eventually died from thirst. Never saw a single player, zed or even a house.

TheScruffyBandit 382 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) Most of my experiences in the mod so far have been: bump into player, shootout ensues which I usually win, then around 10-20 seconds after they die my legs mysteriously break and I fall unconscious, despite having plenty of blood. Edited April 29, 2014 by TheScruffyBandit
odin_lowe 3686 Posted April 29, 2014 Welcome to Chernarus! I have to admit that I've been very lucky in my encounters having met more than 30 non-hostile players in the Stand Alone, and only been killed 3 times in 200+ hours. (have been shot at plenty of times, but didn't die in all but 3 occaisions from these shoot outs.) I've met wonderful players that I still play with and had a great experience overall. I'm enjoying the SA as much as the mod it seems. I hope you have a good time! Safe travels fellow survivor! Mancomb 131 Posted April 29, 2014 Glad to see you're learning the ropes! Not sure if you already figured this out, but in case you haven't yet, you can tear t-shirts (and most other shirts) into rags, including the one you spawn with. Since you stated you had rags, I'm assuming you did figure this out. I'm actually surprised that you managed to kill any zombies with not only a machete, but your fists as well, considering that, since the last update, it's difficult to kill them even with a fire axe. Well done!
Crazy_Spider 235 Posted April 29, 2014 Hey man, not just for you, but for others who read this as well - You can clean ruined rags with alcohol tincture to make the rags pristine, it even works if the alcohol is ruined. It has saved my life a couple times while sniping which has led to saving my buddies live's, as well.
pale1776 375 Posted April 30, 2014 My first time in the mod, I found a coyote and dmr off a dead ghillie right next to elecktro. I was hit by a ural...In SA, I came in a house and saw an axe guy. He waved, I tried but flipped himoff instead XDAxe vs fists of a firsttimer- Axe ftw

Well done! I did a lot of reading here before I bought the game. As I recall the rags in question were from my shirt. As to the zombie, some of them seem to be harder than others. The woman zombie seems to take the most hits to bring down on average. I've killed a few now with fists, though it usually leaves me mostly dead and bleeding badly. The trick seems to be to aim above their head and knock them down frequently. While down, keep pounding the crap out of them. I figure my odds are better that way than running since I have only ever once managed to lose zombies who were chasing me and usually just end up setting off a bunch more anyway. Going up to a second floor seems to be a good strategy too, since most of them phase through the stairs and can't follow, then lose interest after a while. NagsterTheGangster 388 Posted April 30, 2014 kill zombies as soon as they aggro. I find a lot of them now are faster than before (and you!) which for me, ends up in running, then getting hit, then stopping to fight afterall so i can heal quicker than running out of town to heal. P.s. Sounds like youre getting the hang of it pretty quickly if this is all in your first day.

P.s. Sounds like youre getting the hang of it pretty quickly if this is all in your first day.As I said, I did a lot of reading before starting, so already knew a lot of tips and tricks. So... I imagine a few people are wondering how day two went. I will try to keep the breakdown brief. Life 5 = Surprisingly uneventful. I found all sorts of gear and was loaded to the gills with great stuff. Two handguns, a sawed off shotgun, a mosen with scope and bipod, lots of ammo, food, water in canteens, medical supplies. You name it. Wandered aimlessly for a while until I ran into a fellow who turned out to be friendly. He was looking for a backpack, so I helped him get that along with some other supplies. We ended up in the shipwreck when a major desync caught me on the way out. I turned, the server decided I went forward instead and when the two resolved, I was dead, having fallen four stories from the broken section of hull. Life 6 = My newfound companion and I tried to make our way towards one another and I hit a town to stock up. I was way too lucky and found almost every supply I could need plus more. Ran into another person who stopped a respectable distance away. When I started to type friendly (I don't have a mic), he ran up and knocked me out for my gear. I awoke while he was looting me and was again clubbed, this time to death. Figures I had planned on giving him directions to get the other great gear I had seen. Life 7 = Wandered forever and by pure chance, ended up in the town with my new friend! We went out in search of more supplies for me (this time the only weapon I could find for two hours was a machette). Eventually found a shotgun with ten rounds and a quick loader and set off for the airfield. Ran into a ton of zombies along the way and it seemed like each one we killed just spawned one or two more. We finally died when a desync started causing us to miss wildly and stand taking hits. He survived me by about ten minutes, but zombies eventually got us both. Lessons learned: Buy a mic. Shot anyone who moves towards me without permission. Desync sucks and is apparently going to be the leading cause of death for me now that I have the basics. Michael_42 11 Posted May 2, 2014 Here is my first life in dayz saI spawned in berizeno, the place was completely looted,I started following the cost until I say the huge ship, rify. I then headed to the NEA I found to guys there, they were friendly and gave me food, water, an sks, ammo, morphine, blood and got me going really well. We all got disconnected sadly but he was in my steam friends list, we chatted and met back up. Three of his friends met up with us also, we were still at the airfield and a guy said there were 2 guys in the barracks, we quickly headed over they fired upon us and my life was saved by these guys. I was going to pick up a myosin instead of the sks and then BAM! One of the guys in our group killed me. My "friend" won't answer back either. It was pretty fun until this happened but I'm not mad. The game is amazing and I love it!
UltimateGentleman 355 Posted May 2, 2014 One tip I would have if you don't know already is to run diagonally, zombies can actually catch up and hit you if you run in a straight line but if you suddenly go diagonally it takes them a second to register and by that point you're far away enough that they'll slow down and stop caring(you still need to run a good 200m though) I'm really needing a mic too you're so helpless having to stop and chat and half the time other players will just kill you if you don't talk back >.>

The game is amazing and I love it! Yeah, I have heard of this happening a lot. You find someone friendly who acts the hero and then it turns out you are a walking inventory for when their friend logs in and needs gear. One tip I would have if you don't know already is to run diagonally, zombies can actually catch up and hit you if you run in a straight line but if you suddenly go diagonally it takes them a second to register and by that point you're far away enough that they'll slow down and stop caring(you still need to run a good 200m though) I'm really needing a mic too you're so helpless having to stop and chat and half the time other players will just kill you if you don't talk back >.> Excellent tip. I could never figure out why sometimes I could outpace a zombie and other times I couldn't. I would lay odds the times I outpaced them I was hitting a few diagonal lunges in there. Onward!Life 8 = I had almost the perfect gear set after a few hours, several near deaths and some lucky finds. The only things I really wanted were a better scope and bipod for one of my guns, a magnum to go with the two quickloaders I had found and a slightly larger backpack. I was heading towards an airfield, carefully avoiding anywhere there might be a lot of zombies or people, but hit a barrier I couldn't go over. I followed it to where there was a break (of course right near a town) and alerted one zombie. No big deal, I pull out my ax to catch it as it arrives when suddenly five more are on top of me. One from behind and two on each side. No sound, no warning. One minute there is one, the next six without any other players around to have pulled them to me. I had even scouted ahead with my binoculars to be sure I wasn't getting into anything big and yet there I was. All I can figure is that there was some sort of a glitch. Regardless, I was torn to bits in a few seconds since I was jammed into the horde. I only managed to take out two of them before I went. Life 9=Ongoing. Among other things, I have the best pack, lots of supplies, several decent weapons (though I need to improve them a bit still) and a note written out for whoever finds my body on the next death. It's looking good though. I might actually be fully equipped soon if I can survive it and have been improving at dealing with zombies as well as players. I still suffer from a lack of mic though. It's great slowly evolving and learning the ins and outs huh.Bad luck with that horde though most I've had come at me is 4, this was before they could go upstairs though so I escaped...just. Have you got an iPod or smartphone? There's a map app(it's free) for the game that works offline I found it very handy, then you can just have your browser off to save your computers RAM and to not have to switch to it.I think there's a paid one too that gives you map markers and stuff, shows where loot is too but that's kinda cheating I'd say the map makes it a lot easier to navigate, more so than the in game maps. Over 90 hours played and only know my way to like three places...
leviathanapsu 94 Posted May 5, 2014 I think this will be my last update. I'm sure people don't really want to hear the ongoing journey. Life 9 lasted a while. I was fully geared with almost my entire wish list of items. I had killed countless zombies and now had a full stock of pristine items, head protection and the best gear the military could afford. And then this morning I got one-shot instant dead from a zombie. Literally, full health and armored up meant nothing to this zombie and it just did one hit instant kill. I am going to tell myself this is a glitch since if not it means bothering with the best gear is pretty much meaningless. This now puts me on life 10, which I am dubbing 9.1. Life 11 will be 10 if and when I die by something a bit more legitimate.
