Danirus 0 Posted April 21, 2014 Who else thinks it would be awsome to find a 5-digit security lock which you can attach to a door on an abandoned building to claim as your own personal base? Obviously if someone cracks the code they get your loot. The buildings should be out in the wilderness and not generate loot.Only one building per account can be claimed at any given time. haknslash 763 Posted April 21, 2014 i like it. We could even use the fireplaces.
IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted April 21, 2014 They're going to have means to claim buildings (barricading), I highly doubt it will be with electronic locks however.
Westerburg 41 Posted April 21, 2014 Wouldn't work out in the wilderness. The security lock would require either electricity from a generator, or batteries. Battery powered I wouldn't expect it to be a very secure system and batteries would have to be changed frequently. Generator, well that'd make a bit of noise, and you'd have to regularly come back and put gas in it. In either case, it would present a few major drawbacks. 1) Having a powered or locked house will make it a beacon for people who want to get it. Mechanics for doing such would need to be implemented (Ie Kicking open the door or chopping it down with an axe 2) A Lock in the apocalypse isn't really going to stop anyone. Locks are really only a deterrent now because there are either people nearby who will see you kicking in a door, or they are tied to a security system that will alert someone if they are opened. With no society and survivors constantly having to make life or death choices about whether to kill a man for a couple cans of beans, there's nothing stopping everyone from breaking every locked door they find in the hopes that it's got something better. 3) Houses like that would likely have to be bound to a server, and it would likely have to be attached to pre-existing houses. in the mod we had tents to store our things in. Sure they were placeable anywhere but they weren't secure. You could hide them but they could be accessed. The trick to them was that they were small and didn't take up a lot of real estate on the map. A house, on the other hand will take up a good deal more space, have more polygons to process and so on, so there would have to be a limited number or they would have to utilize pre-existing locations. Essentially, a locking system would neccesitate a lockbreaking system just to be considered fair in my book. Nothing is truly safe in DayZ unless it is guarded by people, and even then it's only safe so long as the bullets last. In your defense though I think a locking system on any door in the game would be great. I just think it should be all inclusive and come with a system for breaking those locks/doors. And perhaps repairing those broken doors later on.
tiadashi 262 Posted April 21, 2014 I think he meant a 5 numbered combination lock not digital
scriptfactory 620 Posted April 21, 2014 I had a similar idea a while ago. It would be nice if they could add a feature so every user can craft one lock per server and you can use this lock on doors, backpacks, yellow boxes or whatever. Ruined locks would be unusable/ineffective. If you ever created a new lock all of your other created locks disappear or become "Ruined". They could add a lockpick mechanism that would gradually reduce a locks status to Ruined. I think it would be cool to see clans take over the apartment buildings in Berezino, for example, and have other clans come and try to raid their apartment building. liquidsnake 275 Posted April 21, 2014 I was thinking boarding up windows/doors. Barricades should be removable with certain equipment and take 30 secs.Man, I'm gonna find me a cabin in the woods and actually live there when hunting is implemented.
sparks17 3 Posted April 22, 2014 Would be pointless, encouraging players to stay in one city in a "safe house" is surely not the way of the game, exploration and knowing where you are, the feel of never being safe shouldn't become a game of tag and you can't touch me when i'm home. barricading a door to stop 30+ Z's maybe.not a digital attachment to a lock lol
kichilron 8550 Posted April 22, 2014 Boarding up houses is already a thing that's supposed to come, as far as I am aware. But I wouldn't want a combolock, if I can't break it with my hatchet. Considering how many weapons everyone has on them at any given time you would just smash either the door or the lock itself. I think the boarding is more against Zombies than anything else. Anyone with more than 5 minutes would find a way in either way and that's how it's supposed to be. Nothing's safe in DayZ World.

Otherwise I'll proceed to get some zombies after me and lead them to the barricaded house in the hopes of them taking care of the barricades for me

A lock should only provide a temporary nuisance (basically to protect against people just running inside your claimed house. But once they add traps and barricading it would be feasible to safeguard your loot like in "The Castle Doctrine".
