Don't get too comfortable, they say you're never more than 3m from a rat.  I would imagine the Cherno rats would be pretty fearless by now, not to mention aggressive and territorial.

 

Something to bear in mind as you set up your camping spot overlooking the office/pub/whereever - after a few minutes, the rats will come looking for you.  Blood loss will shortly  follow.

 

Duck into a house to bandage, sort loot, log out or recce another position is fine, but set up your bipod and lay out your mags?  The clock should start ticking, then add another rat every five seconds.

 

That should keep things moving.  Any thoughts?

I'm thinking rat-transmited diseases.

Also,they could form hordes and attack people like dishonored.

If we give the Cherno infection a background like it was transmited from rats,

drove them beserk and started attacking people it's realisticlly supported and i would love to have them in game.

Rats attqcking is a bit extreme imo, but we could eat them like in the metro games/books.

Just don't eat them in front of someone else or you'll get a masquerade violation.

Dude the devs are currently struggling trying to make mass zombies and 100 man servers but you want mass rats? :)

I think this has happened in the past. Not sure tho. I think it killed people instead of turning people into zombies. It may or may not have wiped out half of Europe. But idk. I heard it was just folklore. >_<

That was the Bubonic plague also known as Black Death.It killed 1/3 of the world's population.

The patients were 10 times worse than the zombies in DayZ.

I saw some photos...but they were so gruesome that i decided to not post them here....

No, not mass rats - just enough to make the prospect of camping in an urban or industrial location a costly one. Imagine having to make a run for it and finding they'd gnawed through the straps on your pack while you were peeking through your LRS, so you have to leave it behind?

Heh to be honest no i didn't.

You would be suprised of how many people don't have a single clue about the plague. :)

You could talk with sewer workers all around the world, rats are the same :
Rats always flee humans (or big animals), whether starving or in group. They only attack when cornered - that is unlikely to happen on open space map.
So I would rather see rats as food than threat.

They are already in the files, probably waiting for the wildlife AI stuff to be done before they are pushed out. See this Devblog from September.

Well it's encouraging, but I was aiming more for them to take an active part in the gameplay as opposed to just being mobile scenery

Hi there.

 

I'm living in Bangkok and I've seen many big rats in the streets. I'm agree with JiJi, they always flee.

 

Rats is a good idea, but you forget about another urban animal : the dog. It's interesting to see what dogs are doing when back to the wild (Bangkok is not wildness, but the dogs are living on their own), they are creating some packs, get some territories and even be aggressive against certain people, especially at night.

 

What happens to the dogs living in Chernarus before that plague ?

 

Just think how many people used to have a dog there. What they all become ? 

 

Most of them died tied to their dog house or because they didn't know how to feed themselve in the wild, but as for human, some of them survived and came back to wild life. For me, dogs are most likely to attack humans, especially at night and if the human is alone and the dogs are in pack. Another thing : they aren't scared by fire... :D

 

Look like big AI work to implement dog packs behavior, so we'll see. Anyway, it sounds to me more realistic to be attacked in wildness or in cities by dogs than by rats.

 

PS: sorry for poor english... I guess you understand it anyway.  :)

I like the idea of rats.  It's logical that they would be all over the cities.  If there is ever a dump added then there definitely should be rats around it.  Make food 5x more scarce and I becha we start chasing them to eat them.  Make it part of the cooking system.

 

I'd eat a rat in a video game.  Bet it tastes like chicken.

I don't know, I'd imagine all the wildlife in Chernarus would be pretty fearful of being eaten alive by a hoard of hungry Zeds and since Zeds are just infected humans, I'd imagine anything with a pulse would be just as fearful of us as they are of the hoards.
