Too North East / Coastal Focused?

Recommended Posts

I appreciate that the over-Coastal focus of SA has been discussed many times before but I wanted to raise the issue of how the NE looks like it is receiving too much attention from the devs, instead of inland areas, especially atm with current patches.

The issue of the coastal focus of the game has been raised a lot and we've been told that once vehicles come in then the map will be opened up much more. However, it still doesn't look like the devs take this seriously. Especially when we see that in the latest and upcoming updates we've had Chernaya-Polana and Karmanovka added to the NE, literally a stone's throw away from the airfield. Added with Svetlojarsk, this is really just shifting the focus of the game away from Cherno and Elektro (which is a good thing) but to just another coastal area.

What is the point of the northern border of the map or central towns like the Sobors? There are either no people or no loot. In the mod the Sobors used to be serious hotspots but now there's literally no point when you've got so much stuff centralised around Berezino or Elektro.

What do you guys think? Devs should be making some sweet military bases / kitted out towns in the central areas and maybe central-North?

I agree that the majority of the map isn't really used. And needs to be made useful, through things like persistent storage, construction, higher zombie densities around cities, and perhaps some spawn tweaks.

But adding more "military bases" isn't the answer.

There's already tons of military loot spawns in the west, north, and northwest. Most towns now have high-value loot spawns (i.e. firestations, supermarkets, police stations, barracks, jails, etc.)

Yeah but there still primarily centralized along big town routes. Some Military structures to the fare fare north all along east and west would be nice.

Agreed, these areas of the map need more traffic but I think they'll come into their own with vehicles and particularly persistent storage. More players will be hiding stuff in the quieter areas of the map, bringing up those areas' appeal.

So I'm not too worried about what the devs are doing. Leave the players to populate the inland areas once they have the tools.

What's the difference? You're suggesting that the Sobors used to be the hot spots, but now they're not. As it's currently implemented, there are many hot spots all along the coast. Is this not a good thing? You'll notice that most modernized areas have the bulk of their resources on the coast for obvious reasons in actuality. Why should Chernarus+ be any different?

I think when hunting is implemented there will be much more incentive to head inland. You can still get a ton of equipment heading inland, and I've met many, many people in almost every town whilst playing on full servers. I think the current Elektrozavodsk situation makes people forget that you're not normally going to see half the server in one area, and that player encounters are meant to be fewer and more meaningful.

As it currently stands, I think it's fine and that it makes sense. It'll change.

If anything, they need to get military spawns off the coast and not add more overall. Why they found it prudent to put more military loot spawns along the coast is beyond me.

I think the inland distribution of military/police spawns is way too much already. They needed to add more from the mod, but they went way overboard. Zeleno has a barracks and jail. Green Mountain has a jail. There are three barracks and a jail south of Kabanino. There's police stations in damn near every town now.

Whilst I don't disagree with the OP, it's worth noting that this has been acknowledged and it's a work in progress.

My understanding was that the North is gradually being worked on with some bigger cities appearing over the coming months. It could just be a case of finding a starting point and working from there, or coincidentally the rate the work has progressed means that, temporarily, there appears to me more focus on the NE.

Doesn't the comment of the Sobor's being either neglected or looted by players somewhat contradict itself? I mean... players have to loot, surely? Granted, they're not the most vibrant of cities but there's still a fair share of [decent] loot if you fancy the hike. I've come across a few players in these cities - though none of these ended friendly - and am still cautious around them. I don't always play on high-pop servers (ave. probably being low-teens) and find that I'm least likely to bump into other players in the very SW or directly North.

Isn't there also a town in development North of NW airfield? I'm not sure, I've just been told by a friend (and we've tried to go there, but both times were accosted in the Airfield on the way - yeah, ok, our own fault).

I think it's also important to note that it's sometimes nice to have a quiet zone. If every town/area was busy, I personally think it would diminish some of the atmosphere from the game.

In a nutshell: Give it time. There's more to come, I'm sure...

Please no more military loot. There's an excellent game for playing around with military weapons. It's called Arma. It has 2 sequels.

There's plenty to come up north. Just look at the plots of land up there waiting to be built upon.

Anyway, I think spawns are the main issue, not city locations. If anything, the major cities should be the least likely places to spawn in. They should be the dangerous place you venture to once you have a bit of gear.

Turn map into one big island then spawn all along the coast. Mil spawns inland.

No balota airfield.

This game is also "for playing around with military weapons", hence why it was made using the Arma engine... If you just want friendly social interaction I suggest you join SecondLife :P

No, I don't think it is a good thing, otherwise they might as well reduce the map to just the coastline if no one bothers heading in. And when hunting is implemented then they'll still be able to hunt near the coast. Furthermore, if there's so much loot on the coast why go hunting inland when there's enough cans in coastal towns to keep you going?

It's undeniable that the centre of the map has been overlooked when it comes to loot. Chernaya-Polana or Karmanovka could have been as easily placed on that empty northern highway where there is literally no reason to go. This is fundamentally about making the game more diverse and less "same-old". A lot of people are getting bored easily over the samey coastal gameplay.

And also, it is logical that there should be POIs away from the coast, considering that IRL not everything useful/interesting is on the coast - Chernarus is based on a landlocked country filled with plenty of non-coastal interesting places.

It's nice to see players that do not play the same as I do. I always avoid the coast and go inland, I find all I need there. Nobody is stopping you from going inland, I don't really understand the problem here.

The map is not finish yet, let the time to the dev to implement all the new town, buildings and loots. You can definitely see that far north will be attractive in the future. When the population of server will rise near 100 players, they will spread out all over the place.

There are already 2 new towns NE (North of the Airfield) plus lots of empty slots reserved for more in the vicinity. I agree with the initial map they did focus too much on coastal towns and the heavy concentration of military bases on the West side of the map. It seem now however that they are trying to remedy that with more points of interest in the East.

However, I am still of the opinion I had stated in a similar thread, that the Western side of the map has too many military bases and either should be reduced or more balanced across the map. You can visit most of the military areas in the West in a matter of 1-2 hours max and get geared up to the brim, you know the usual looter route Balota-Military Base(near Pavlovo)-Zelengorsk-Green Mountain- Military Base(near Vyborg)-NW Airfield and by the time you reach NW Airfield you probably are so fully stocked on gear that you won't even have to go there unless you are looking for rare items like the LRS.

Yep, the fact that all the spawn points are clustered around the east side of the map near the coast just helps fuel PvP in the major cities there and leaves there rest of the map empty, why we no longer spawn on the SW side of the coast or have inland spawns I do not know.

And what exactly are you going to hunt along the coast? You'll get the odd deer stealing apples in a rural area, but the vast majority of wildlife is... in the wild. There will be incentives to go inland. There's a LOT of empty real estate up north along the highway that's undoubtedly going to be used for the production of more towns/cities. As of right now they seem to be working their way outwards from the coast, which again, makes sense. I'd rather they structure the map from one direction to the other in an intelligent manner rather than cherry pick locations all over the place just for the sake of having people run in a different direction to grab loot.

It'd be different is this was beta or the first week of release, then I'd be concerned.

Look how Chernaya Polana looks like in RL, new village north of it (Karmanovka - in next update) also looks like in RL. Now move google map to west and compare  how roads, football fields, and even tree lines look just like in RL. So devs will probably make towns to look like in RL. And there are towns all over northern highway.

They just decided to start making towns from east to west.

No need.   Hunting, vehicles, and non-placeholder zombie spawning will address your concerns.     The Mod already demonstrated this.

That's a fair enough point that I agree with, it's just that it would be nice (and 100% possible) if they could do this focusing on areas of the map that actually need attention such as the middle, rather than consolidating an already loot-plentiful area such as the NE. We shouldn't have to wait till the end of alpha for a good reason to visit the middle of the map. Players will get bored as I have seen happen to many people I used to play with. They just go back to the mod because there's actually stuff to do - which is a shame.

And what exactly are you going to hunt along the coast? You'll get the odd deer stealing apples in a rural area, but the vast majority of wildlife is... in the wild.

And you're point backs me up - Chernarus is a very undeveloped, rural place with very little between the minor settlements along the coast (plenty of "wild" for animals to be wandering around). You should probably take a stroll along the coast before claiming that you doubt animals will hang around there... My ultimate point being that on the coast there is everything you can find inland + MORE.

I disagree, smallest airport is there

Although it's the smallest airfield, it's still an airfield with 2 barracks, 2 hangars and ATC tower = good military loot. The middle lacks any of this. Not to mention the 5 increases in loot spawn in that area (Svetlojarsk, Chernaya-Polana, Karmanovka, Khelm, Olsha).
