No to mention construction, which opens up a huge amount of stuff to do. Like fence building. Perhaps tending to a persistent garden that grows produce over time. Constructing a lean-to. All that.

The issue is that very few (if any) tasks really require input, or labor at all. I mean, if I want to fix a broken leg I just click "Use" on my splint or Morphine Injector and it happens without fail.

These things need to have SOME form of input to begin with. Grinds entail tedious amounts of input. Whereas now, there's no input to speak of.

Some good points here, but we musnt stray from our current set of ideas into fort building simulator 2014. I would like to have a garden and such like a little home i can return to, but i dont think the idea you have implemented to that extent it would fit well within dayz because im of the opinion it does not really go with the theme of survival horror.

What would be good though is a kind of base that you use as a refuge in the event of a zombie hoard roaming through the country or something like that.

But it's not a "survival horror" game in the traditional sense. It's also a sandbox as well. Case in point, see The Forest. Wonderful upcoming survival game. Has mutant/zombies to keep up the "horror" aspect. Yet it has construction. Moreover, the second you pigeonhole something is the second you limit your scope of inquiry.

Having something that you can call "yours" also means that it can be taken away, which is where the tension for which DayZ is famous arises. Fences keep the zombies out. Gardens keep you sustained, but require you to invest more time in tending them, harvesting, and waiting for the crops to grow.

Either way, check out this...

Rocket flat out says that we're getting horticulture, construction, and barricading.

In the last slide titles advanced social mechanics, i think the walkie talkie idea could in well.

If anyone commented this, ok, but the forests are a great place, any survivors there would be heavily armed, so their cabins would be incredibly rare, but awesome finds, also, when creating structures is implemented, all the players will flock to the forest to create bases

Staying with my caves!

Although, what we probably would need too, are mountains. Not just some hills, but real mountains. Look at Skyrim for example, this type of mountains. Maybe a little town somewhere hidden, not showing up on the map, because it became a ghost town before the epidemic started.

Canyons anybody?

Keep the ideas coming guys.

1. Design loot for creating/constructing campsites in the wilderness. Create new camping gear that serves the functions their real life counterparts do. Sleeping bags, Camping chairs, Fireplaces, Tents, Floor lamps, Portable Radio, Fishing rods, camping tents for protecting you from the rain and NOT STORING LOOT. Let us fold or roll up the equipment and strap it to our backs then we can carry it around and set up a campsite where we like.

2. Place more loot spawn in forest/wilderness areas. Currently the only lootspawn for such places in the deerstand and the helicopter crash. Could we have abandoned shacks? bus stops along the roads that go deep into the mainland? underneath bridges? along power stations or ontop radio towers? Riverside fishing spots? Picking fruits and berries off trees?

3. Turning the radio/walkie-talkie into "very common" loot and encouraging its use, this brings players closer together by introducing a long range method of communication everyone has easy access to. It will be the first thing survivors acquire and actively pay attention to in the event of a real life apocalypse.

This not only adds fun to the experience by meeting up with other survivors to help/kill them in the wilderness or tracking down a group by their radio transmissions as a bandit. Campsites will have visitors and can even function as makeshift survivor first-aid stations, a features sure to be popular among hero clans. Set up a free meal center in the woods for starving people.

4. Create another category of loot. "Wilderness". With newly designed loot spawn areas placed at remote wilderness locations, surviving in the wilderness is surely transform into a more feasible and exciting experience and playstyle. Wilderness loot spawns spawns equipment and gear needed for survival: knives for skinning meat, sleeping bags, tents, hunting weapons, fire starters, special waterproof clothes, lamps for night time, fishing/cooking equipment, bottles and drinks, first aid, battries, map of central charnarus, compass/watch, etc.....

5. LOTS AND LOTS MORE CRAFTING RECEPIES and more types of items. Dont really know what to say here, survival skills include using limited resources to serve a purpose that it wouldn't normally be able to without a survivor's intervention. Sorry bad english, not sure how to express this concept in words. Oh and animals.

1. Yeah

2. Ok but quite rare imo

3. Yeah

4. Ok new loot, but still im not sure with the idea of finding stuff between the trees

5. Yeah, but without turning dayz into some kind of Rust, i would keep it very simple

My overall opinion, beyond details, is YES. Dayz is missing this feature, it would be awesome.

Are these indestructible bases?  You can't set fire to them? blow them up? drive trucks into them? shoot the locks off? break in with an axe?

Indestructible would be pointless - the country would end up looking like New York.

If they can be destroyed, you better hide them good.

But there's really nowhere to do that.

In fact - if you have ever been camping, or just walking in the forest - you will know that it is ALWAYS in towns before you set off that you get your equipment and gear, knives, sleeping bags, tents, weapons, waterproof clothes, lamps, cooking equipment, fishing poles, bottles, drinks, first aid supplies, maps, compass, watch, matches, and all those cool things you might need in the wild.

What REALLY spawns in the wilderness is:  wood, fish, acorns, roots, berries, hedgehogs, snakes, deer, frogs, pine cones, mushrooms, wind, cold, damp, insects, electrical storms, rabbits, rocks, leaves and grass, birds, and other similar stuff

You can spend a year in the wilderness without finding any fishing poles, first aid supplies, cans of drink or maps. I have a mountain forest starting 100 feet outside my back door and I can swear this is true, if I ever need a knife, I do not go up there looking for one, I just drive down the hill to the store in town.

Many of your thoughts are good, but a wilderness does not need spawn points for survival gear (it's a "wilderness" right?)

Honestly i never expected this post to get this much attention. It seems point 4 is the most controversial one. What i mean was creating a new category of loot with items that belong both to this category and residential/farm categories (items that already exist). The purpose of this new category is simply to classify what type of loot can spawn in wilderness loot areas (referring to point 2 not random spots on the ground). It would not be impossible to find camping gear or hunting equipment in an abandoned rest stop in the middle of the woods or an even an bus stop along roads.

I think the point of the woods is that anyone, in a apocolyptic world would flock to the forest to hide, any of their camps you may find would yeild a lot of loot, for a small amount of zombies, but the location would change randomly and be very hard to spot.

Also, structures could be dug, or built up from the ground, to act as a home base for all your loot.

drunkens idea for hidden towns/mountains

Food and item wilderness related spawns

Structures: it could have as many build able structures as it wants!! Don't you dare compare it to any games!! The point is to be as realistic as possible!

Just summing up the comments in case you do something similar, not much more to do with this.

They have confirmed horticulture, where we can grow plants persistent to a server and hostile animals for q2 and q3 of 2014. Kudos to the guys at BI.

That means i can set up a campsite in the forest where i can not only plant and grow plants to consume and decorate but i also have to defend the campsite from wild hostile animals

And abandoned mine :)

It would be cool if there was something like a Dead hunter's bodie that spawns in the woods, and he would have Basic survival gear, hunter clothing, and a moderate chance of a rifle or bow and Hunter's pack.

I really don't like the idea of players living in the woods. I don't even like the idea of building new structures... I think players should be, pretty much, forced into a multiplayer experience.

The easiest way to accomplish this is to focus all action on the towns. No building in the forest. Only moving into existing buildings. Police stations. Jails. Small cabins. Digging cellars. Gardens on rooftops. Barricading doors. Finite amount of door locks per hive (to avoid exploits). Players would make these towns come alive.

Damn straight. All of those activities should realistically take a good deal of time, to the point where it might be reality where you sit in camp for a couple of real-life hours maintaining your weapons and gear. Don't want to do weapon maintenance (dis-assembly, cleaning, sighting, zeroing, etc)? Suffer from inaccuracy and unreliability (firearm jams, lowered melee weapon damage, etc) Don't want to maintain your gear? Watch as your clothes have lower protective/capacity qualities, backpacks lose gear from holes and broken zippers, and binos/compassesetc get worn out, scratched and useless. Don't want to spend the time to cook a healthy, hearty meal, and eat junk food and soda instead? Exhibit a depressed immune system, lower energy levels, etc.

I want survival to be hard, not just "open backpack, drink soda, instantly use sewing kit on pants, etc". You should try to SURVIVE, not just live....

This completely. If you can't be bothered, you get penalised for it just like you would in RL.

In a real world zombie apoc, you would have all these chores to do. There's nothing else to do. You can't watch tv or play computer games or visit the mall etc. Life has forever changed. Your chores are now things that give your life meaning, give it purpose. The chores are basically your survival aids. You can do them in whatever order, whatever time you like but you know they need to be done and you know that today, in a world of flesh eating zombies, you are a free man for the first time in your life.
