Tips for finding can opener?

Recommended Posts

I hate to post stuff like this, but I cannot find a can opener for the life of me. I've found just about everything else but that. I've heard they're hard to spot but any tips at all?

Police stations have been kind to me.

However, I've never noticed them to be particularly concentrated.

Keep lootin, hopefully you'll stumble upon one.

Search piano houses. Those houses are best houses.

Looking VERY FUCKING CAREFULLY.

It's the first item you want other than maybe a fire ax and its the smallest piece of shit so good fucking luck

Jails, townhouses in cities and those green houses with the double doors that have a room straight ahead of the entrance with a kitchen are generally where I find them.

they are pretty random. i have gone days without finding one, then out of nowhere will find 2 or 3 in a single building.

if you happen to find a knife, bayonet, or other small sharp object, you can carry that around to open cans. yeah you lose some, but its a hell of a lot easyer to find more cans than it is to find that damned opener.

They are everywhere as generic I think, I've seen them in apartments, houses, military ... I always pick them up even if I already have one, I heard they are cursed.

The very first few days they were incredibly rare (especially because there were far lesser servers and everything was looted) and ever since then I always pick them up.

The factory is a can opener factory I think.

In over 420 hrs. of DayZ, this is my nemesis. Not once, not a SINGLE time have I ever encountered one of these darn things! First things I look for instead are bayonets and my trusty fire axe.

Bayonets seem to get ruined fairly easy when opening cans, but no worries, even in that state they are doing a fabulous job :-)

Man, you wouldn't believe how sad it is, starting to play as a newbie, and starving several times because (not knowing this bountiful source of infinite knowledge and trollination which is embodied in this forum) I was convinced that only an axe or the can opener would do.

Oh, and of course all I had as far as food went, was tuna. Yeah, I was looking for something I didn't need, which I didn't find and hence starved several times, never even realizing they have a pull - open... uhm.. thingydingywhatchamacallit.

Axe's, Screwdrivers, Knives, Bayonets can all open can's, for this reason, I feel that rice, cereal and easy open tuna is king.

Is there any difference in the amount of contents lost using different implements to open cans?

I'd expect using a fire axe to make more of a mess of the cans than popping the lid out with a screwdriver...

I did do some not very scientific testing a while back with it, from what I recall screwdrivers and knives will generally leave you with about 70%-80% of the can where a axe will give between 60%-70% I don't know it that's still accurate because I use a screwdriver out of habit, in my mind I wildly stab the top of the can.

That makes sense.

I always imagine my carefully trying to pry the can open with the screwdriver and then cutting/stabbing myself, causing me to swear and drop the can, losing a small amount of food in the process...

It's a good idea to hit tab when searching and just strafe through the room hitting the common loot drops. By showing you the ground items on the left of your HUD it'll help you find those hard to see items like can openers and compasses.

Arch + Piano House - also the under estimated little house with blue shutters/windows. tons in the Kitchen usually!

No way, in 420 hrs you never found one?

you must only stay in the forest.

Also, look in corners and try pressing tab over known loot spots that seem empty. Sometimes stuff spawns below the floor, and can openers can be hard to see.

And also use someone else's tip from 4 posts above and claim it as an original and insightful addition to the conversation. Just fucking with you Rickenbacker.

I think that's the shitty loot spawn mechanic at play. It happens with everything and it shouldn't and it needs addressing.
